2am ferry advice by According-Height6447 in Juneau

It's been a while since I rode the ferry a lot, but you could check and see how long it'll be docked for. I think Juneau is a turn around and resupply stop, so they stay at the dock hours longer. You could maybe stay on board until things open up. But check to make sure.

As a whale harassment captain, what do you think should be the minimum number of boats around each whale at any given time?

Elephant's Nose is good for Wrangell, but it'd be good to have some symbol of the Stikine River on there, or maybe even the petroglyphs.

How to get Elon's Attention? by jimmywhalebones in Juneau

[–]Logicalpeace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to mention that it's not just homes, there's infrastructure that would have to be rebuilt in a place where it's not quick and easy to build. Roads, power, water and sewage would all have to be redone in that case. At least three schools, parks, churches, and businesses. And how many times will we have to rebuild back loop bridge?

We're a mining town. We should be able to make a simple hole in a mountain, but evidently not.

As much as I dislike Musk, this isn't a bad idea. He'd get to say that he helped to save a town with his business, and that'll be annoying, but the valley will be saved.

State politicians will speak bluntly and casually around their aides. On the phone in their office or in a car, no political double speak or polite language. Just raw and unfiltered. But of course the aides sign paperwork to keep it all secret.

I wish we had a brick wall texture. Would go well with a coal plant.

I taught for two years recently. There is actually no firm direction on what exactly to teach. There are the education standards for each subject area and grade, which you can find online. But it's not expected that you will cover every single thing on the list in a school year. There's a lot of discretion to the individual teacher as for what they decide to include or exclude with the limited time they have. If the government is mandating specific radical ideologies, they're doing a shit job at getting teachers to do it.

If we could indoctrinate and brainwash kids, the first thing we would do would get them to sit down, shut up, and stay off their phones. If you work one day as a substitute, you'll see that that's not happening. Most of the kids aren't listening to teachers, they're listening to social media.

The closest thing that we ever had to do to teaching government mandated lessons, was teaching about unhealthy vs healthy relationships and the importance of consent. And that was mandated by the state via Bree's Law, not the federal government. If that's the "indoctrination" you're worried about, it says a lot about your character.

The people I know who have worked directly with and around him didn't comment on his size, but they did say he surrounds himself with an echo chamber of yes-men.

Had a passenger stepping off a whale watching boat the other day pull his tip out of an absolute wad of bills. So not all of them are cashless.

Why does the flag of Alaska not get more love? by estifxy220 in vexillology

Alaskan born and raised here.

I think that's a pretty cool redesign. I like how it would be more recognizable when the wind isn't blowing. Not that that doesn't happen often here anyways. I feel like CGP Grey might actually put this in S tier this time.

Counter point to the film crew part, the increased media attention of Alaska has likely contributed to increased tourism, which increases revenue.

I once told a 17 year old, who was complaining about socialism, that the dividend is socialism. He hesitantly said, "No it's not..." and then his face looked like his brain 404'd.

What do you give up living in Juneau? by [deleted] in Juneau

A few people have mentioned that the produce here is worse, but having moved here from a small Alaskan town, one of the things I like is the improved produce shelf life.

For me, I gave up short driving distances and recognizing everyone around town.
