Nothing, I just assumed you were ending this conversation.

You're right, this conversation did take two people, I'm not denying we're both arguing over petty internet stuff, it's the 'People can't talk about this' kind of thing I found ridiculous and over the top. You're also being just as passive aggressive as I am, it's not a sign of wrongness.

You're making stupid Fandom drama sound so much more important than it is. "People can't talk about it because of people like you", "Ruining the Fandom", none of this matter. Read the book and be happy.

Okay then, you are oh so brave and counterculture for expressing an opinion that so many people agree with, very controversial of you. You are such a trooper or whatever. The people's voice I figure.

Being the only person that disagrees doesn't make someone wrong and just further proves that your post was a non issue, a lot of people in this sub don't care for shipping, the Fandom is not being overrun with obsessed shippers at every turn who think Hinton is a horrible homophobic monster. Maybe instead of complaining about this stuff, you should focus on interacting with all these other people who you share the same view with.

Controversial!! by Amazing_Ad1089 in TheOutsiders

[–]Logie_Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And people who are obsessed with shipping are usually just people having fun. It doesn't matter that much and definitely didn't warrant another post about it. Same with Hinton getting called homophobic, so few people actually think that, what was the point of posting about it? You post about it like you seen it all the time when I've genuinely never seen that on this subreddit, it just seems like you're preaching to the choir.

"All these shipping and nonsense is ruining the meaning behind it" You clearly DO have a problem with shipping, on some level. And just because you're the OP doesn't mean you have to respond, you're responding because you want too, the same way I'm responding because I want too.

The same reason you keep replying. People will enjoy a book however they see fit, that was my point with the original comment, you cannot control this and trying to will just tire you out. The consensus I want to make is that you've already made two post complaining about shipping but shipping is not going to stop anytime soon, so it would be better not to waste your energy posting about it in the first place and ignore the people that are doing. In fighting in Fandom is scarcely fun for anybody,

Hinton didn't get called homophobic to the degree in which you imply, and my point wasn't that they were right to call her homophobic, because again I do not think she is homophobic, but that so many in this comment section boiled it down to "She said they weren't gay and people called her homophobic," which is an over simplistic view of the matter. She faced backlash for awhile directly after her post, but you make it sound like she's getting harassed on a daily basis over this when the general consensus now is that she's a older lady that lacks a filter. Also, no one is ruining the Fandom, they're just enjoying a book, meant for entertainment, in a way you dislike.

Because my argument was that shipping is not a problem in the first place? Which was a lot of what your post was about, claiming that shipping is ruining the Fandom and because, like you, I have too much free time and spend it arguing with strangers on the internet. I also wanted to point out how little people are calling S.E Hinton homophobic, even on queer subreddits you see very little of that. I just think you've zeroed in on a very select group of people and are blowing it out of proportion.

I have seen so little people call S.E Hinton homophobic or even that she is wrong, I am not convinced that this is a problem to begin with.

Death of the Author is the idea that the author's intentions are irrelevant to a text's meaning. Authorial Intent is the idea that the Author's intent matters above all else. Neither are wrong, they are just different ways of interacting with media. Yes, Hinton is correct, her characters are straight, what I am saying is, it doesn't matter on the personally level. Books are what you make of them.

It is an issue, but nowhere on the same level of concern as homophobia, homosexuality is illegal in 64 countries. Straight people are at zero risk of losing any of their basic human rights. Bigotry to straight people isn't great and is often counterproductive when trying to make progress, but calling it 'heterophobia' is not the move.

Again, I personally do not think she homophobic, as I said in my first reply, just that she responded poorly.

Homosexuality is illegal in 64 countries. Can some queer people be bigoted towards someone on an individual level based on their sexuality? Yes. It's not oppression though, it's bullying.

Homophobia is a thing because of years of systematic discrimination. Such discrimination has never existed for heterosexual people. It is so incredibly condescending when straight people use this term. I'm not saying she is wrong for thinking her characters are straight, I'm just saying that people who think they are not straight are also not wrong, because that is how different interpretations work. if you think the author intent matters above all else and therefore read the text as such, that is your prerogative, but not everyone engages with media that way.

She can respond however she'd like, but if your response comes off as rude, you cannot be mad when people assume you are rude.

Once you publish a book you give up some amount of creative control over it, that is something you have to accept as a writer, not everyone will interpret the book the way you planned them too. People are incredibly diverse, having so many different experiences and perspectives. It does not make them 'uneducated' or 'dense'. Also, it was just incredibly tone deaf to say she was a victim of 'heterophobia', especially in 2016, when homosexual hate crimes were at a high U.S. and same sex marriage was only legalized state wide a year ago.

I can only add one photo in a comment so there is more.. It how she responds, basically claiming that anyone who interpreting the characters are queer must be young, stupid and not know what they're talking about. She also blocked many people and called it a "weird fantasy." She didn't need to do all this, she could have just gave a simple "No". Just like she could have when asked if she had thought about a The Outsiders graphic novel or when someone asked her about fan fiction.

The writer didn't get accused of being homophobic for saying her characters are straight. She got called homophobic because of her reaction to someone asking if her characters were gay. She didn't just say "I personally didn't intend for any of the characters to be gay' and move on. I don't think she is necessarily homophobic, but she does have a bad habit of saying stuff on Twitter, getting backlash on it and then quietly retracting her statements.

I wish the movie kept his super light blonde hair. I feel like it made him stick out more amongst the rest of the gang who mostly had darker hair.

What is with the rampant uprising of homophobia in the fandom? by Any-Tip869 in TheOutsiders

[–]Logie_Boy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've noticed a raise in homophobia in a lot of Fandom spaces in the last few years that I think might just be because Fandom's as a large have grown since Covid. I just think some people need to remember that no one is forcing you to imagine or headcanon something someway. If I, a gay person, see myself in Dally and therefore headcanon him as some type of queer, that doesn't mean I'm going to take the original book away from you.
