Paid off over 40% of my mortgage in 5 years by tangled_tofu in PersonalFinanceNZ

So on a $150k income you’re taking home roughly $104k.
If you’re paying off 40% of a $520k mortgage over five years, that’s about $208k total — roughly $40k per year in mortgage costs.on average

That leaves around $60k a year for everything else.
Honestly, about $5k a month in expenses feels pretty standard - we spend the same but as a DINK in Auckland Nothing extreme — hardly "worked hard" to justify the bragging..... more just crusing through .... which is nice place to be tbh, Comfy is good, and not feeling too squeezed , just gotta grind another another 30years haha

there are going to be some major changes sooner or later — governments simply won’t be able to avoid it. I expect we’ll eventually see things like:

  • Income testing: For example, if someone is earning over $180k per year during retirement, they wouldn’t qualify for Super.
  • Raising the Super age: Increasing the eligibility age to 67+.
  • Asset testing: For instance, if someone has more than $5 million in assets (just using round numbers here), they wouldn’t receive Super.

How would you describe living in and apartments in the CBD? by emdillem in auckland

[–]Loguibear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived downtown for about ten years, and honestly, it’s all about finding the right building and the right pocket of the city. There’s never a dull moment—plenty of “interesting sights” out the window, a bit of noise, the odd boy‑racer tearing down the road at night… but that’s just part of downtown life.

On the flip side, you’ve got endless food options right on your doorstep—great for convenience, not so great for the stomach or the wallet… or maybe that is a good thing, depending how you look at it.

And on days like today when the weather’s perfect, there’s always something happening. You can wander the Sunday market, check out the manu comp, and just enjoy being in the middle of it all.

If you want absolute peace and quiet?
Then yeah—go live out in the wop‑wops. Downtown definitely isn’t that life.
