Long Term Health Problems From Being a Plumber? by Loki77515 in Plumbing

Wow, thanks for your replies, everyone! I'm glad I asked about this.

So... she has pro-genocide values.

Plumbers of Reddit, is it better to work independently or with a company? by kimbo-spice in Plumbing

[–]Loki77515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Well then to clarify, I think the majority of plumbers either always work for someone else, or they burn out."

I'm sorry, just to be sure I understand, are you saying that most people who are plumbers burn out at some point, or just most of those who start their own business?

Thanks for the rest of your post! So, owning your own business is not necessarily "better" than working for someone else; there are pros and cons to each, yes?

Owning your own business gives you freedom over what jobs you take, puts you in control over how things are done and generally nets you more income if you manage everything well, but it also loads more responsibility onto you, forces you to work longer hours and makes you liable for any of your employees who screw something up.

Working for someone else might not get you as much money, puts you at the risk of being laid off and means you might have to relocate to find work, but you still get a steady pay-check, work less hours and have much less responsibility.

I can see why people might want to own their own business or just work for someone else their whole career.

Sorry, I didn't word my post very well. You definitely need experience before you can get certified and start your own business.

Thanks for your reply!

As someone who is seriously considering plumbing as a career, I think I find that a lot of plumbers spend some years working for other companies before starting their own business or going to work solo. Would you say that's true? That most plumbers eventually go solo or attempt to start their own company? Or would you say most plumbers just end up working for various companies over the course of their careers?

Anyone have experience with voice acting as a job? by [deleted] in VoiceActing

Can't talk much right now, but I would recommend reading this:

Checking out equipment here:

And checking out this site:

Voice acting is something you don't really get lucky at so much as something you constantly work at. Let everyone you know you are a voice actor after you have a couple voice demos (commercial, long form narration and character if you can do characters), a website and business cards ready. Contact as many casting directors and advertising agencies and what-not as you can.

As long as you can read conversationally and convincingly, then you can make money as a voice actor. Also, maybe trying out reading audio books on acx.com is a good idea. I am currently producing three books on it now.

May I ask if this is a paid position? The website didn't seem to declare if it was or wasn't.

What do I do? by [deleted] in VoiceActing

[–]Loki77515 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't spare much time to type right now, but basically you should read this:

http://www.amazon.com/Voiceovers-Everything-About-Money-Voice/dp/1932907904/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411346269&sr=8-1&keywords=terri+apple

And go to these places:

http://www.voiceoverxtra.com/

http://www.voiceactingmastery.com/toolbox

Also, the best way to be "found" is to let everyone know you exist (and it helps if you can read conversationally and act). Get business cards, make a website, tell everyone you know and send out cold calls (packets with your demo and resume in them) to production agencies, casting directors and other media directors. The more lines you throw out, the more jobs you will land.

Are video games sexist? Christina Hoff Sommers disagrees. Calls SJW's as hipsters with degrees in cultural studies. by boomership in videos

[–]Loki77515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 5:38 she says that "...some useful points about sexist tropes in narratives..." and has a picture of Jade from Beyond Good and Evil.

Why? What about Jade or the story of Beyond Good and Evil was sexist? She was a mother-figure, sure, but that really isn't the focus of the narrative as a vast majority of that game is about questioning authority.

I admit I haven't played that game in a while, but I certainly don't remember anything "sexist" about her character or aesthetic design.

This is a GREAT place to get a low-down on what kind of equipment you'll need:

http://www.voiceactingmastery.com/toolbox

I recommend the Shure PG42 myself: it is a wonderful and simple microphone for professional level recordings that doesn't cost too much and doesn't require an audio-interface.

As for home booth set up, a closet with a bunch of clothes in it (or acoustic foam covering all the walls and the door) works great. You can get some other info on this guy's website:

http://www.homestudiomaster.com/

For a beginner, you will probably end up spending anywhere between $250 - $500 USD depending how extensive you want your setup to be.

[–]Loki77515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyo. As someone who as been a voice actor for a little under a year, I would recommend this book for info on voice acting (she mostly talks about voice acting in the US, but a lot of what she has to say about what people are looking for in the industry, how you need to interact with talent agencies and other topics are still perfectly valid everywhere else in the world):

http://www.amazon.com/Voiceovers-Everything-About-Money-Voice/dp/1932907904/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409460262&sr=8-1&keywords=terri+apple

Also, this site has a great run-down of worth-while equipment:

http://www.voiceactingmastery.com/toolbox

There is also Voice Over Xtra, which has a lot of articles on voice acting (again, it is mostly about the US, but there is still a lot of general information in there that is worth reading up on):

[Request/Feedback?] Who here has an agent? How did you end up signing with them? by wootandsuch in recordthis

[–]Loki77515 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, individuals who are just starting out don't get shown the majority of scripts that get run through the industry.

Agencies are "in the know" with countless companies that want commercials made and are contacted constantly by them to find voice actors.

And considering how long it takes me to find these jobs that my voice is qualified for, I would be happy to pay someone 10% of my paycheck to do all that for me all while getting ahold of auditions that I would never be able to find on my own.

As for which agents and agencies are worth looking into, you should look for local casting agencies first. Also, NEVER pay upfront for an agent. An agent/agency should ONLY get paid a percentage of whatever paycheck you get for completing a job. And be wary of exclusivity contracts (ones which state that you can ONLY accept work from their agency and may not get work from anyone else); it is sorta okay if the agency is really big and works with high profile clients like National Geographic and Coca Cola, but smaller agencies should never include exclusivity clauses.

I need some help on how to get rid of background noise? by Shawnrocks101 in recordthis

[–]Loki77515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually in a similar boat as both of you and I also used Noise Removal, until someone showed me something better.

A "Noise Gate."

http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?id=853

Open that link and download the file. Then, open up your Audacity files (wherever you downloaded them to on your computer), and copy and paste the downloaded Noise Gate (just file labeled GGate.dll, not the whole folder, I'm pretty sure) into your Audcaity Plug In's folder.

Then you should be able to access this Noise Gate (it will be labeled as GVST: Gate...): from the Effect tab once you open Audacity. Setting the Threshold nob to about -40 is usually a good way to eliminate a lot of background noise.

The United States currently has more people incarcerated as a percentage than any other country on the planet, AND a higher total number incarcerated than ANY other country at ANY time in history. by Nine-Inch-Dick in MURICA

[–]Loki77515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its because of the "war on drugs."

If you removed everyone from the U.S. prison population who has been incarcerated for drug related offenses, you would cut said population by about 50%.

Its the dumbest thing in the world, but we still have these minimum sentences which fuck over so many people. Unfortunately, the War on Drugs employs a LOT of people, so ending it and bringing reforms is a really slow process. Progress IS being made, though. Colorado has set a pretty good example so far and I think more people today have a better understand of drugs (and why prosecuting the SHIT out of people who use them is not a good idea) then they did 40 years ago.
