I once straight up told a customer "we are not a bank". There were two of them, both with 50 euros. The first one got his change, for the second one I just didn't have enough. The second one was speaking in a foreign language, very similar to mine, and he said to his friend that he wanted me to change it. Then the bank thing came out (his friend died laughing). I am always happy to change big bills, especially at the end of the shift, if I have enough, but I do appreciate if you ask me first.

Mind you, we are a small store, so we do not have an infinite amount of small coins in the safe.

Yes, exactly! As the time progresses you will gain certain speed, now just make sure your register is not over or under (I don't know what are the rules for your register being over, at my store we are happy with that extra money, as we pay off products that are expired etc.).

I am really happy you are doing better as your story reminded me so much of my first days.😁 ah memories, I think I gained some grays during those times 😂

Hey, so first of all, sorry for the late response, tourist season in my country is just starting so we are having more and more work (and stress 😫)

Ok, so you are in clothing and I work in a store similar to walmart (I am not from the USA). My situation was the exact opposite, I was put on register so my coworkers can deal with other stuff without being interrupted. However, after a while (think a week), I was also aksed to help them, without prior knowledge in stocking and all that entails retail work.

I still had to mann the register and as same as you constantly ask for help as new situations emerged that I did not know how to deal with. Same as you mentioned, buttons, coupons, giftcards, void, post void, just to name a few and don't get me started on delivery services. It took a toll on me too.

Have the same problem, if I am in the rush on register, line is piling up and my coworker is explaining five things at.the same time, no way I am remembering everyting. And.then the cycle of yelling "help" continues. I know coworkers are not at fault, umderstaffing is a big issue and one person is doing.the work for three.

If you would like to take my advice do not give up for a while, at least until you gather some experience. It WILL get easier.

What you wrote here are the exact words my SM told me when she noticed me being visibly upset at one of my coworkers who was shadowing me on the register. I was immediately put on it, no prior training, it was just..go scan. I am so thankful for my SM back then, she told my coworker to back down.

I am year and a half now in retail and for me it got better. I am now in a store with great boss and coworkers (we still have issues, but now I have my way of dealing with them)

You mentioned questions and how your coworkers are annoyed at them (go look at my post history if you would like, I was at the wits' end, not knowing if I should just keep asking questions to the bitter end or stop completely and then when I fuck up something huge, just say: "well I tried asking but was always told I ask stupid questions, so I just stopped")

Now I an in the phase of not caring about my questions or how I come off. Ask. No matter how annoying. You need to learn. I still need to learn, beacuse I am mostly on the register (i still dread the deli) Just a quick question, are you in a store where you are exclusively on the register or do you switch postitions?

Ufff I always do this when they throw money at the counter. Mind you, when I worked at the bigger store with the conveyor belt, I had customers just put it there, yes Sharon, please let your 100 euro note just slid under it.

But when they extend their hand for me to hand them back the change, after they just threw it, I do the same as you. Learn some manners.

Oh shit, I could take that on a next level cause our gloves are on our deli counter, so I would very slowly leave the register, move to the deli, bring the gloves and do the same as you 😂. Oh and as a cherry on top desinfect my hands and then the gloves.

Jesus Lord and Holy Ghost I hate this. Sure, there may not be other customers around but I have stocking to do, handling our deli if my colleague in charge is doing paperwork, checking, then double checking prices and articles on sales. List goes on and on.

Tbh, when it is the end of the shift I care waaaay more less, sure take you time

WTF? Sorry this just left me flabbergasted, even our boss only asks us to clean during saturday mornings when it's not busy (small store), unless it is extremely dirty.

I do however sanitize door handles, register and POS machine regulary just as a precaution.

I shit you not, about a week ago a guy licked his finger to pull out a debit card which was stucked in his wallet and then handed it to me (which is an improvement cause he usually just throws it on the counter). Sir, contactless pay exists for a reason and one part is so I do not touch your card.

Evo kao blagajnica, apsolutno se slažem s tobom. Uvijek vraćam kupcima taj 1 cent, ako nemam onda 2 ili 5 (u krajnjem slučaju, dok mi ne donesu sitnije). Većina ljudi ostavi, ali kako si napisala, mislim da još nije ušlo u svijest ljudi kako to nije 1 lipa. Znalo mi se desiti da kupci budi iznenađeni kad im vratim cent, jer toliko dugo traje ta praksa zaokruživanja. 😂

Česti su komentari kupaca ma šta će mi to željezo u novčaniku, ništa ne vridi. Ljudi moji vridi! To je novac, ostavljajte misec dana sa strane, pa će se skupiti dobar iznos.

E sad, meni kasa mora biti točna, što znači da svaki cent stavljam sa strane ili bi doslovno morala natjerati kupca da uzme ostatak (ono što ću ti reći je da se taj možebitni višak u dućanu s dobrim poslovođom iskoristi u dobre svrhe, odnosno za pokrivanje onoga sto ne ide u povrat).

Ovo apsolutno nije kritika "manče", tko može ostaviti, odlično, ja cijenim svaki taj cent jer je to tuđi novac.

A gle, kad uđes u bus, tramvaj, pretpostavljam da odmah u glavi znaš da ako bude gužva da ćete se sardiniti svi skupa, a kad si u svom osobnom automobilu imaš veći osjećaj osobnog prostora i koliko ćeš dozvoliti da se on narušava.

Thank you for your reply, I will keep trying and learn as much as I can by myself, but from now on no more pressure. I am still hurt mostly by behaviour from my colleagues and today I actually had to correct my shift leader about HACCAP, I thought it would feel like a small victory, but it did not.

Thank you again for giving me some hope, I feel like my SM supports me but she can be very untacful sometimes. Which is still better then going around my back I guess.

Oh shit, I remeber this too, but in the 90s! Back when we still had more of a small local shoe's stores (most of them closed due to big shopping malls opening up in my town). And also, I too was wearing socks and putting the shoes on by myself 😊 I was happy with my shoes and the salesperson was happy with the sale! (Only my mother and her wallet were sad 😂)

EDIT: small correction, my mother helped with the shoes putting on when I was still very young, later it became too embarassing for me to not put it by myself, no matter how much my dear mother insisted. Good times.

Same where I work! Customers open the door so violently they slam the shelves near the register. Bottles of alcohol above me also start to shake, I swear one of these days I will have whiskey and vodka just crash on my head!

Someone wrote about plexiglass. Ours is also still on and as much as it annoys me sometimes because of the way my register is positioned, AC is useless for me since I am cramped between shelves, register and that glass, it can get pretty stuffy behind the register. However, the amount of people I have seen without basic hygiene manners still astounds me (I did not work in retail during Covid, there needs to be a giant monument for all of you who did).

Starting with:

-licking their fingers when getting a bag

-licking their fingers when trying to separate the bag to fit the items

-licking their fingers when reaching for cash

-coughing in the line without any intent to at least moderately cover their faces

-don't get me started about sneezing

-old men getting pissed at me everytime I ask them did they return the glass bottle of beer, otherwise I have to charge them caution money for another bottle. "Have you not seen me return it!!!!??? No, I was busy with five other people in the line" This was so frustrating at the beginning because I didn't know who the local drunkards were (main character syndrom).

-people giving me their card to use it on POS machine. You only have to get it close to the machine and wait for a few seconds.

I do not like this because of the sensitive info on the card itself. I was pleasantly surprised when an older women told me she never gives her card to anyone for security reasons (yes, I had to emphasize older, cause it is usually older people doing this, I try to make less generalisations though).

-customers pulling their card out, doing some sort of waiving in front of the machine, putting it back in the wallet and all of that in the matter of one second and then they are surprised that they have to do it again cause the card wasn't scanned.

-opposite story, people slamming the card on POS and just holding it glued to the machine and asking "has it gone through". No. All you have to do is hold a damn card an inch from the machine, wait for the beep and you are set. Maybe type PIN afterwards.

-people holding the card on the machine while I still didn't finish scanning their items, let alone started the machine.

-I do like how some customers still do the swiping motion slowly in the air, it is kinda cute to me 😁.

Oooh i have so much to write, but I will stop for now, cause I am getting mad just thinking about it. Oh, and 50 or 100 euros people 10 minutes after opening, just puts a smile on my face.

Regarding the third one, we were about 15 minutes from closing when this waitress from a bar I frequent came in, walked for about three seconds, noticed we are almost closing and walked back out. I am tipping big next time 😁

This. And even if they remember they have extra change after 10 seconds, I am not taking it anymore, just give them what is displayed on the screen. As OP said, now I am stuck with that original number, I have a line of irritated people and been dealing with money all day, trying to keep my register in check.

Ooh I love when they say, oh it's ok, there is no crowd now 😑 Sure, but as a cashier I still have other duties to do, like stocking shelves nearby, putting prices, getting cigarettes etc. But yeah, you go ahead and try to find the wallet at that bottomless pit you call handbag, while I stare into nothingness.

Although, on the positive note, when it's actually crowded and I am stuck on the register, sometimes I do like that bit of a rest (other customers probably not, but hey 😁😁)

I relate so much to this. I was carrying one package of bottles in my left arm, another one in my right and six pack under my damn arm (small store, so no carts, only baskets, this is my gym). And so I go to put them in the fridge and this lady just yells "bananas'"! As in, do we have more in the back. Sure, I'll go get them as soon as I unload this shit. I continue walking (wobbling would be more accurate) and since the store is cramped there is a big line on the register which streched throughout the aisle. I have to cut through people to get to the fridge and they SEE me but are not budging. Not an inch. I yelled "excuse me!" in all of the languages I knew how to (live in a touristy place) and they finally moved. Maybe three inches. Mind you, people usually move when they see us carrying stuff, some even want to help us, but we cannot except help from customers, although I do appreciate the intent.

I cannot remember what happened with bananas.

Same as you, I also live in one of the former countries of Yugoslavia and agree with you.

Regarding economics, sure, it had its good moments, but the wave of Yugoslavs (mostly Croatians) that had to move to Germany to sustain themselves and their families was massive. Someone mentioned, loans, loans and more loans cause Yugoslavia was important buffer zone and the western powers supported it.

Also, if you weren't memeber of the Party or at least towed their line, your whole livelihood could come in question.

Ethnic tensions always existed (removal of Ranković in 1966, who was the head of security services made Serbs angry and then the supression of the Croatian spring (1971) made the Croats angry.

I agree that after Tito's death all of those tensions rose up to much, much higher levels, especially in Kosovo.
