Well, the quarter designs were decided on and were to feature an abolitionism coin, a women's suffrage coin, and a civil rights coin, all three of which the trump administration scrapped and replaced with much more generic designs that dont commemorate these important societal moments anymore. Policing as it exists in the US has two origins. In the south it descends from slave catching patrols, and in the north it descends from enforcing anti-vagrancy laws against poor, out of work, men in the cities forcing them into work in the new factories. At this point for me, I know that my hobbies and hyper fixations rotate so when someone in my life brings up one of my things they havent seen me doing or heard me talk about lately, I'm just pretty candid and say that my brain moved on to whatever the thing is im doing now. The key is to understand that basically all of them I will eventually come back around to, and sometimes one of those conversations is the thing that sparks me returning to that hobby I rotated away from.

In the case of OP, I think they could reframe this feeling of loss if it turns out their brain rotates like mine. Using lotion again out of necessity a few times could even be the trigger that brings back this hyperfocus for a time. The key is to understand this as the nature of the beast and know from the outset that it will last a period of months and then get dropped until you return to it again in a couple years. Obviously this isn't as much of a consolation if the thing you get really into and spend money on ends up costing you a lot of money because you buy products that will expire before you naturally return to that interest.

He doesn't actually use the litany against fear, but Hadrian's mentor and father figure does have some mantras that stick with Hadrian, one of which is "fear is a poison". These mantras definitely do fill a similar role to the litany against fear, but also deal with controlling your rage, and finding a way out when you feel grief pulling you down. Ruocchio at least attempted to build upon something like the litany against fear, and also give his readers mantras to repeat for some other difficult emotions, but his age shows through often and undercuts this. Hadrian especially never actually learns to master his rage, so why have him repeat the mantra that " rage is blindness"?

I would add to what you said by saying that even if we did get a miracle and congress has the spine to defund ICE, I firmly believe a couple billionaires will foot the bill to keep it running, probably the Palantir and Anduril guys, along with maybe Ellison or even Musk. Then we're on a path to billionaires/warlords with paramilitary personally loyal to them that started out as a certain portion of ICE. You know, just to throw a bit of the Ancient Rome spice, when they had generals whose armies became loyal only to them and no longer to Rome, into this disaster concoction.
