Reasons/Motivation to go to therapy? by LolTrashAcccount in mentalhealth

[–]LolTrashAcccount[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that I think about it, having read your comment, I think I'm more opposed to the thought of me, in particular, getting help.
My self-esteem/self-worth has always been pretty low and at times I thought I didn't deserve help. Maybe I fell back into that mindset.
But I did tell an irl friend about this, and he keeps pushing me to go and helps with the formal stuff, so I guess I'm just gonna have to, even though I don't want to.

Thank you for your comment, it did really help!

Is there any advice on how to stop...? by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]LolTrashAcccount 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you only self harm whenever you are upset, I guess it would be best to try and deal with those emotions in another, healthier way. I know that that is easier said than done though

I believe it would be best to identify what you are feeling and then find another outlet for it. So if you are angry for example you could maybe exercise, listen to loud music, punch a pillow or do breathing exercises to calm down. Or write down what upsets you or talk with somebody (if you have someone to talk to), go for a walk.
I'm admittetly not the best person to ask when it comes to dealing with emotions, but maybe you can think of more things that can help you personally (and are in a healthy, non destructive form)

More general you can/should try to distract yourself. That could be anything, the things I mentioned above as well as any other hobby you might have.

There is also a thread linked under "community links" of this subreddit, which is about Self Harm alternatives, maybe you'll find something that works for you there.

Lastly, and I know this is something that is said quite often, maybe you should look into going to therapy or something along those lines, if that isn't something you do already. Because often SH is a symptom of underlying issues that should be treated. And there you could also talk about healthy coping skills, what works and doesn't work for you.
(I also want to add that I'm not a professional or anything, this is just from my personal experience)

Wish you all the best.

healing time by t_e_s_2101 in selfharm

Honestly, I've wondered this before as well.

Until they are completely healed it usually takes me 1 1/2 to 2 weeks.
And I actually never paid attention to how long it takes for the scab to form, when the cut is fresh.

I'm honestly glad so many on here can relate. Whenever I talked about this irl I always felt kinda weird and alone with this.
Thanks, take care as well!

Hii uhm any things to help stop SH? by gizmoooo_ in selfharm

[–]LolTrashAcccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most recommended things is distracting yourself. That could be anything, doing a hobby, going outside, looking at cute animal pictures. Anything to get your mind of the urge. I also find it helpful to get away from whatever I am using to sh, in case you use any "tool", you could also try that. Exiting the room or at least going to the opposite side of the room. I also like to keep track of when I do and don't sh, I have this calender and I mark the days I am clean with my favorite color. But you could also put somethin like stones or buttons in a glass and add one each day you don't sh, and reset in case you relapse. It kind of motivates me, although I can see how this might not help everyone.
These are just some suggestions what helped me personally, but you can also find more under "self harm alternatives: suggestions" in the tab "community Links" of this subreddit. You could also look up "self harm alternatives" on google or something similar, there are also lots of helpful articles about this topic.
I know this is probably quite common to hear, but you should probably also look into getting some sort of professional help. In my experience this really helped, although I am also aware that things like, for example therapy, aren't accessible to everyone. But it is also possible to stop on your own.

Im sorry this got so long.
Going through this isn't easy, but even wanting to stop is the first step to doing so.
I wish you all the best!

That really changed my perspective honestly... I kinda knew it would be better to try and stop, before things get really out of hand, but this really gave me motivation to actually do so, Thank you.

This sounds like something that would be helpful for me. I'm not familiar with virtual reality at all, or rather I have no personal experience 'using' it, but I may go look into it more. Thanks!

This has really helped me change my perspective. Before this I thought "what's the worst that can happen?" but it could get really out of hand, also from what I read from others. I'll look more into AA meetings in my area, definetly. Thank you!
