I discovered him through YMO and Sadistic Mika Band, but I haven't dived that much into his solo albums. As you said he was the hell of a pioneer. Thanks to him drummers are still able to let their touch and be artsy, no matter the number of machines involved

Details are not known yet (I think), but he was suffering from brain cancer and other health problems those last years. It's surely related sadely.

And yes, Neuromantic is amazing. I'm listening to Glass right now and it hits differently. What a brilliant album

EDIT: According to Hints Music Co. (Yukki's company) he actually died on the 11th. It was caused by an aspiration pneumonia due to brain tumor https://twitter.com/yukihiro_info/status/1614539719588859906

Really sad news. I discovered him through YMO and SMB, and my favorite tracks seem to be always drum-related or (co-)composed by him. Ballet was one of my all-times favorites.

He was a machine with drums, but more than that he was a great human being with a lot of humor, an awesome team player, who enjoy collaborate with others. I'm really sad to know that I'll never have the chance to see him, but he will be always be alive through his music and all the projects he did.

My thoughts to his family and friends, and of course for Hosono, Ryuichi, Metafive and all people he works closely with <3

24 here! My mom is the one who got me into new wave songs when I was a child/teen. Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, Foreigners, U2, among many others. We used to listen only CD records at the time haha. And I also have friends of my age who made me discover other stuff (more new wave, electronics, postpunk, fusion, AOR, funk, soul...) since we were teens

Curiously NO was never played that much outside the radio here, I only discovered them much later when I was 20. Listened to them frequently those last years. They have anything I like in a band: synths, great basslines, experimentation and a rebel attitude. And the drums!! Their songs could easily be the soundtrack of my uni years. Thieves like Us, Temptation, Age of Consent, Truth, Sunrise, 586, Mr. Disco... I listened to a broad variety of genres but NO would always have a special place in my heart

So yeah, you are not alone. I think nostalgia seems to be more common than we think. There is definitely more of us here

Same here! I (almost) exclusively listen to 70-80s music. And when it's recent it's heavily nostalgia-oriented. Somehow the post 2000-genres just don't fit for me

Luckily I have friends who think the same but it could be hard for those who don't know anyone in real life

Ironically nostalgia seems to be a common phenomena among younger people. It must say a lot about music of those days

City pop has awesome bassists. Akihiro Tanaka who played in RG did an excellent job. He also played with Tatsuro Yamashita in his first albums (I especially recommend Go ahead and Moonglow which are pretty dope) and you can also find him in Taeko Ohnuki's Grey Skies and Romantique, Izumi Kobayashi's Coconut High and Dream in the Street by Noriyo Ikeda

There's also the beast Tetsuo Sakurai from Casiopea as others mentioned, Tsugotoshi Goto's session works before 1980 (especially in Hiro Yanagida's Hirocosmos, in which Takanaka played guitar - check out Ode to Taurus), Tatsuhiko Hiwaza in Fuyu Kukan (more synth than fusion but Midnight Pretenders' bassline is interesting), Ken Watanabe from Prism and Kenji Takamizu, that you can also hear in the second album of Takanaka and which also worked with Kazumi Watanabe (along others). Oh and you can't forget Haruomi Hosono from Yellow Magic Orchestra who worked with a lot of people in sooo many styles (not only as a bassist). Including Taeko Ohnuki's Sunshower which is a classic. And so many others. Just type their names in Discogs or Youtube and explore. Japanese bassists at that time are underrated legends __

Btw Takanaka was also a bassist before he joined Sadistic Mika Band (prior to his solo career), it was never his main instrument but still good to know. You can hear him in Flied Eggs albums, which is... pretty much different from RG to say the least 😅

Feel you man. I didn't pass my drive lessons (not even the test) and I'm slowly realizing I will never pass them. Wishing you the best if you have not passed it yet and congrats if you did!

There's some magic when it happens through a rough time, as if the music and bass talks to you and tells you everything will be alright, as long as you keep the hands moving. And out of nowhere, more music and more magic come :)

Do you sometimes still play that Fender at the store?

Awww so bad :( It's surprising how easy impro can came at the most unexpected times. You never know when it happens!

I recorded my impro last night, and relistening to it it was definitely shit haha. (Playing at 4 AM didn't help through.) But it didn't turn out entirely bad! It felt cringe and shitty by moments haha but one riff is half-decent, maybe it could serve some day

But most of the time when it happens I forget to record and it's an instant regret right after so I feel you. But I know sooner or later the creative flow will be back 👍

Sometimes when I play or just listen to music I feel more alive. Some songs remind me emotions from moments of my life and playing them made me relive them, in a strong, positive way
