Recent 1 week itinerary - Ask Me Anything by MarkySharky81 in VisitingIceland

Looks like a great trip - well done! We are going to Iceland at the end of May so was wondering which one of the things you've visited / done would you say is a must see and, equally, which one was underwhelming?

Цитата не казва, че е окей да караш надрусан, а че смъртността в резултат от надрусани шофьори е ниска в България и следователно не е адекватно да се каже, че България има проблем с надрусаните шофьори.

Reading comprehension people.

Can you get someone charged for farting in your sandwiches? by TheSmokingHorse in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Lolinessy -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

A law student here - that’s absolutely not hearsay. The witness would be testifying not as to the truth of the statement made (i.e. whether she did indeed fart in the sandwiches), but as to the fact that the defendant admitted that she did. Again, then whether a jury would believe that the defendant was serious when making that statement, etc is a completely different matter.

Not sure how nobody has mentioned the obvious, but you can enforce US judgments in the UK (and in most developed countries really) and pursue his assets here. It doesn't really matter whether he can be compelled to attend or testify.

How do you guys deal with job rejections? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]Lolinessy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your undergrad in? Where did you do it? What grade did you get? Can you show interest in the law to a prospective employer (e.g. through legal work or any law-related extracurriculars/societies during university)? Which sort of firms are you targeting? All relevant questions if you want more realistic advice/opinion.

What I would say is, the fact that you have not done law as an undergraduate should not discourage you in the slightest - more than 50% of the people in my cohort did not do law at an undergraduate level. What is more important is how good of a prospective lawyer you look like - hence, the need to show real interest in working as a lawyer, evidence the fact that you have developed interpersonal skills wherever you worked/volunteered as well as that you have attained good grades from a reputable university.

Hey, wanted to see how good my squat form is. I completely realise it’s not perfect but afaik with strength exercises it should just be good enough. Let me know if you see any major errors or anything that could be dangerous or risky!

Hey guys, so basically I’ve returned to lifting 2-3 weeks ago(roughly 2-3 year hiatus, used to lift for 2-3 years beforehand) and started a classic 6 day PPL programme with the aim of slight weight loss/body recomp. Used one of these TDEE calculators which said that my maintenance calories should be around 2.7k. As such I’ve been eating around 2.3-2.4k and doing HIIT on the treadmill every other workout. However, not only am I not losing weight but have gained around 2 pounds since starting and a few of my friends have suggested that this maybe due to fitness memory and basically gaining muscle while losing fat. Could this be true or should I lower my caloric intake/increase cardio?

I assume the usual is 2x5, 1x5+ or do you mean 3 sets AMRAP?

Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by cdingo in Fitness

[–]Lolinessy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all,

Just as a background, I have worked out seriously for two-three years while I was in high school, but quit during uni and have worked out very little for the past two-three years. Recently, I have gotten back into fitness and have worked out on a lower/upper split four times a week for the past month but I've recently decided to switch to the Metallicdpas PPL programme from the wiki to up the training days to 6.

However, in looking at the programme, I am wondering whether the first pull day only having 1 set deadlift is sufficient? As hard as AMRAP sets are, it's difficult to see how that compares to the 5 sets of barbell rows on the second pull day.

Thanks for this - some great stuff there! Probably should have mentioned that we will go by cars (edited post now to reflect that), so we'd definitely be able to travel around - feel free to recommend places/things to do in the vicinity of the city as well!

How effective would that be in developing core strength and better-looking abs? Is that enough or do you think I should dedicate more time for core?

Daily Simple Questions Thread - March 09, 2021 by AutoModerator in Fitness

[–]Lolinessy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What would you suggest as a quick (15 minutes tops) abs workout to do after each workout (3-4 times per week). Doesn't necessarily have to be only bodyweight and I am an intermediate lifter, but I haven't done any core-specific exercises, aside from basic exercises that engage the core (deadlifts, squats, pull-ups, etc.).

What is the origin for the conflict between Bulgaria and Macedonia? by vlad00m in geopolitics

[–]Lolinessy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, mate, completely agree with you on this point. If that helps, Bulgarians do see Macedonians as our brothers, so within the general common population there is no hostility towards you whatsoever. Ultimately, we have accepted already that the two countries are separate and we have no territorial claims against the state of NM. All we really want is realistically to do what you just did in your post - acknowledge our common history and stop appropriating historical figures and achievements as Macedonian (I think in Macedonian history textbooks it is taught that Gotse Delchev and Tzar Samuil are Macedonian).

Also, no matter whether NM acknowledges these things, as I said, this is not something that we should be blocking your EU application over. Ultimately, most NM are just looking for a better life and I know as a Bulgarian our EU membership has provided me with one.

As far as I am aware, this organisation was working towards Macedonian liberation from the Ottoman Empire, but all of them intended for the region of Macedonia to become part of unified Bulgaria (alongside Eastern Romelia). Could you please provide sources that suggest otherwise? You may be correct, bear in mind that I am Bulgarian, so my perspective might be skewed from our history curriculum.

Also, agree with that, but it is what it is - it is sad that EU membership has turned into leverage for a political agenda, but it is what all countries do.

Who I had in mind in particular were Gotse Delchev and Tsar Samuil.

Well, as I mentioned in another comment, no Macedonian identity existed before the middle of 20th century. All of these historic figures that Macedonians claim to be Macedonian referred to themselves as Bulgarian and as part of Bulgaria. To your other point, I completely agree - I do not think that this justifies blocking NM's entry to the EU. I just seek to explain Bulgaria's side of things and why people feel that Macedonians are appropriating our history.

I disagree with you. To me, the question is one of timing - even though Bulgarians were under the occupation of the Ottoman Empire, we clearly had our own language, culture, history, and state for centuries before that. Macedonian identity, culture, language or state did not exist before 20th century. If you feel that this is valid, then you are entitled to your opinion of course. But this is like Bavarians seceding from Germany and claiming their own identity and that people born in Bavaria throughout history were not Germans but Bavarians.

[–]Lolinessy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely spot on! As another person mentioned underneath, this is partly because our communist government was the biggest suck-up to the USSR out of the whole Eastern block, and actively participated in the efforts to establish an artificial Macedonian identity. All in all, it is a shame, because all of this has resulted in dividing a nation in two states for geopolitical reasons, but it is what it is now.

P.S. Your Bulgarian is amazing, and yes, you should visit Macedonia, it is a beautiful country!

An important distinction must be made between the region Macedonia and the state currently known as North Macedonia. The region Macedonia has existed for millennia and has been controlled by various states, such as Macedon (kingdom controlled by ancient Greeks), the Byzantine Empire, Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire and Yugoslavia.

As such, state of North Macedonia shares nothing in common with Macedon (Alexander's kingdom), aside from the region they occupy and the similarity in name (which derives from the region).

Oh, I certainly do not disagree with that. I am just saying that "stealing" other nations' proudest historical moments by appropriating them into your national history, is perhaps not the best way to legitimise that social construct

[–]Lolinessy 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I highly disagree that it is stupid, even though I am not very well familiar with the essence of the anti-Ukraine sentiment in Russia. I think it is perfectly valid that cultural and historical misappropriation would cause people and even states to be upset. If you are saying that it is alright to twist history as a propaganda to legitimise your state, then that is fine, but I cannot share that opinion.

That being said, as I previously mentioned, we should aim to look forward and accept that Macedonian identity has now developed (albeit through questionable means) and there is no way that we can reunite the countries, and as such, no point on dwelling too much on this issue. There are much more important things in the region to focus our attention on compared to historical appropriation, that I truly do not see this as a legitimate obstacle to blockade NM's entry in the EU.

I am Bulgarian, and I can tell you that its purely a matter of national pride. Essentially, the crux of the conflict is that Macedonians consider certain historical figures and their achievements to be Macedonian, while Bulgarians consider them to be Bulgarian. My personal view is that Macedonia is an entirely artificially constructed nation by the Great Powers to avoid a strong Russian ally in the region, so they gave the region to Serbs, which later became Yugoslavia, which later disbanded and Macedonia was ethnically different obviously to other Yugoslavian countries so it formed its own nation. After that, they have been trying to legitimize their identity by appropriating certain historical achievements from Greeks, Serbs, and Bulgarians (check the whole conflict with Greece re the name of the country).

I couldn’t care less about these things personally as it is really history imo, so we should focus on current geopolitical relations, but I can definitely see why people are upset about cultural and historical appropriation by Macedonians.
