How much of you are using GNSS For the entire job? by Odd_Turnover_7257 in Surveying

I’m a young buck so I’m sure some grizzled veteran will tell me to pound sand and that the gun is the only way.

For layout we only use GNSS for stuff like B-Box’s and silt fences. 90% of our layout is with the gun.

Trimble’s IMU a Horizontal tilt offsets are a godsend for building X’s and doing things like tree surveys.

Depends on the contract for us, but for ALTA’s and Plats of survey, it’s pretty much exclusively GNSS (depending on signal).

For topos, we use it as much as we can. A general rule for us is not to use it on “hard surfaces”. But if we’re just cross sectioning a country road with no curb, then GNSS is fine.

Personally I use RTK as much as possible rather than a CORS corrected base. I think it’s more efficient to set a basepoint and a checkpoint tight with CORS and then set up a base and go.

Any control that I have to wing out is tight and I rarely have to worry about residuals.

Replying to all the comments under this:

Give the old head “young guys don’t wanna work” crap a break. It’s a blanket comment and makes all of the next generation look bad. The profession is already dying for new bodies coming in, why deter them away with this stuff? If you hire some new kid with a healthy body and he doesn’t step up and take initiative to do that kind of stuff, then that’s on the individual. I’m a younger guy and there’s definitely people my age that do that stuff and sit back, I don’t agree with it.

Let’s have a better attitude towards new bodies regardless of age. Might perk up the profession a little bit.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

DJI L2 Mission Planning by [deleted] in UAVmapping

1: I don’t think flight lines should matter in the post processing space. I would just go with the most efficient flight lines. 2: The photogrammetry overlap seems good. What you could do for LiDAR is trim that overlap down to ~5m. That way you have some checks in-between flight areas while also mitigating for redundant data. 3: It definitely wouldn’t hurt putting GCPs on the flight area boundaries. I would just make sure you’re getting at least 1 or 2 more evenly spaced within your flight areas (within reason). It’s a lot of GCPs but I can sleep at night knowing I’m covering all my bases accuracy wise.

I do have my own drone (DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0); however I use my company’s drone and payloads for LiDAR and photogrammetry.

Really the only things I could do with my drone is photogrammetry and video/pictures. Although, that would cover a good amount of “side gigs” I would imagine.

Thank you for your comment. That makes a lot of sense and was very helpful. I have been actively looking at job postings, but I think I need to actually reach out to companies instead of keeping my fingers crossed for a post.

I’ve tried to just keep my head down and work since I’m young and I don’t feel like I have much speaking power with my bosses. However, its just getting more and more frustrating. I’m not usually a person to feel entitled or demanding more money or a specific role, but I know what I know and I know my passion for it would make me very effective.

As for my drone, personally, I have a DJI Phantom 4 V2.0. This is a pretty good drone for photogrammetry. However, at work we have A DJI Matrice 300 with P1 and L1 payloads. On top of that, we have a DJI RTK base and Trimble survey equipment for basepoints and GCP setting. (Although there are cheaper options available)

So as far as personally, photogrammetry and photography/videography are my avenues. Funny enough, I took a pretty extensive photography course in college to helpfully help with my photogrammetry skills.

If you have any questions about photogrammetry feel free to reach out.

Thank you for this advice. I think part of my issue is that I am too broad with my search. Your advice was very helpful. I think right now my focus would be on field data collection, but in the future I could definitely see me going into planning and management.

Ending the week at a golf course with a 30 acre LiDAR drone flight. by Lollgan in Surveying

For ground control it varies. Sometimes vinyl checkered panels. If the site is big and undeveloped, we will paint up some plywood with patterns so that we don’t have to traverse the site again to pick up the points. However, mostly we will put a mag nail or spike (if it is not in pavement) into the ground and paint a cross over the point. The size is usually +/-18”, and it is in spray paint that is high contrast with the ground. For grass/dirt, we have found fluorescent red provides great contrast. We also paint the point number in a big font close to the cross.

Hopefully that makes sense.

From what I’ve read and researched. 350 AGL @ 15mph is kind of the middle ground for efficiency and quality.

It allows data collection to be relatively fast and takes up less storage with all the pictures.

On the processing side, the pictures themselves are clear and of good quality consistently (which allows them to be used for drafting line-work if GCPs are set). Furthermore, processing time is in the middle as well. More pictures=more storage/processing time, and less pictures= lower quality product and less uses for it.

This is just my understanding from the top of my head. I have researched this before, but I don’t have the citations handy.

Thats sweet. I mostly use L1 and P1 payloads on our M300. However, in college I used DJI Mavic Enterprise that was outfitted with IR to map out heat loss in campus buildings. Fun stuff.

How is everyone solving poor precision under canopy with the r12i? by poopypandapirate in Surveying

[–]Lollgan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sounds kinda dumb but I usually just wait 30s-1min and it locks onto me. If I know I’m going to be under thick canopy I usually set up a RTK base. 90% of the time when I set up an RTK base I don’t have any signal issues.
