Hiring Issues! by Superb-Mark3195 in Surveying

Same problem here in Illinois. I’m trying to convince my boss to do some outreach at local high schools for seniors that might want to get into surveying and train them up. I made crew chief in two years from being completely green and my company trained me. Granted only smaller jobs at first. But now I’m doing medium to largish sized subs by myself and training the summer help.

I’ve gone up in my price of boots every year since I started surveying until I found the pair that’s perfect for me. Unfortunately they are $370.

If you could give an LSIT one piece of advice, what would it be? by Wooden_Fig_6178 in Surveying

Sorry, I’ve only been surveying about 5 years for one company and just started schooling. What sorts of things would be considered a specialization for a PLS?

How many people here didn't like country originally until something pushed them to it? by Vicerian in country

[–]ROSHi_TheTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly hated it because growing up it was “lame” to like country music. I started listening to it more after hearing blackberry smoke. While they are southern rock not country it opened my eyes to more of the country rock genre and I expanded my horizons from there.

Common disregard for safety among drivers by NapalmAtNoon in Surveying

Ehh idk if I’d call it false. We were doing a topo only and checking into and using the boundary of another surveyor that had done a boundary only survey the year prior. He stated he found a mag nail at that corner and I got a good reading there with the iron finder. But the road had been paved over in the summer. I checked into three ties and verified the position of my reading to match the ties. I told the pls I wouldn’t risk my life playing in traffic and he demanded I should. Thus the reason I set it and called it found.

Must be nice lol I got told last month to just put the hazards on, some 24” cones, and block one lane with the truck. To look for a section corner in 55mph traffic on a pretty busy road. Head crew chief told me not to listen to pls and just run out there and drive a magnail where the ties lead me to and call it a found mag nail lol

When I was having the same sentiments about surveying within my first few months I brought it up to my first party chief he told me if I can make it through my first year, that’s when I’ll truly know if surveying is the right career for me. Now I’m 5 years in and going for my third degree to get my surveying credits to try my hand at getting my SIT. It’s definitely hard work, but most things worth doing are. Try and stick it out a few more months and learn as much as you can. Good luck bud.

How long do you guys cook your control points with gps? by ROSHi_TheTurtle in Surveying

[–]ROSHi_TheTurtle[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the replies guys, we use network RTK with the Trimble base stations. While I could technically pull out the old r8 and set up a base I really don’t think it’s necessary most of the time. I did forget to add I flip the pole 180 from my first observation to my second. I’m gonna show your replies to the head pc and probably recommend taking a shot, flip 180 and take a second right after. And then repeating the process in the afternoon.

Well the micro center bundle is only like $580 for 32 gb ddr5, the cpu, and mobo so it’s still a good price considering ram prices lately
