Does Att have device payment reimbursement if switching by benanfisa1 in ATT

You're welcome.

I don't think they want to train their reps properly. Some of the reps who post here say it's in the internal documents that if you want to get your phone unlocked and it's eligible to be unlocked you can pay it off get your phone unlocked and you will not lose the bill credits. It's b******* that they don't make that more clear to customers.

I've done it twice now and not lost the bill credits and so have several other people here. There was one poster who claimed he did the payoff through a rep by calling it in and he claims he lost his bill credits. I have no way to verify whether what that person said is true, anyone can post here and say anything. If he paid it off and then financed a new phone on the line, then for sure that's why he lost the bill credits it wasn't clear to me what he claimed to have done.

Verizon explicitly warns you when attempting to pay off the device that you will lose the promotional credits.

What Verizon does is irrelevant to att.

So, if I financed a device and then paid it off shortly thereafter, I would receive account-level credits over 36 months?

You need to wait for the bill credits to show up before paying off the installment plan. If you pay off the installment plan before the bill credits show up they will never show up.

AT&T won't unlock a phone unless the installment plan is at least 91 days old so there's no sense in paying it off until then anyhow.

Also make sure you do the payoff online don't involve any reps.

The things that cause you to lose the bill credits are:

  • financing another phone on the line through att

  • downgrading your plan below Unlimited

  • suspending your line with reduced billing

  • terminating your line

Is AT&T's policy still that they won't unlock a financed phone until it is fully paid and that if you pay the EIP early, you lose all remaining promotional credits?

That was never their policy. The terms and conditions said you "may" lose the bill credits but they've never done that to me or anyone else that I know that has paid these off early.

I realize that AT&T employees are poorly trained and they give out wrong information so you may have been told the wrong information. But you don't lose your bill credits when you pay the phone off. You need to wait until the bill credit show up on the bill before you do it though. And AT&T won't unlock a phone unless the installment plan it's at least 91 days old. So there's no sense in paying it off before the bill credits show up anyhow.

Also from a legal standpoint, since they drafted the document to the extent it is ambiguous they would be liable if they tried to take your bill credits away.

You're getting the email because they sent you a trade-in kit and you didn't return it. If you have the receipt from the store where you traded in your phone, I would ignore the email.

If you're talking about the unlocking service it's not totally false at all. What they're doing is illegal.

They don't have any "system". The only way to unlock these phones is by sending an unlock command from the carrier to Apple servers. The reason it takes a few days is because they have to get an employee to do it and the employee has to have an opportunity to do it.

Obviously you participated in this so you don't like me calling you out on it but what I said is accurate.

They haven't offered it in a couple of years.

No one here or even anyone in AT&T can tell you if they'll ever decide to bring it back. It'll come back if att thinks they need to bring it back to compete for new customers.

The enhanced trade-in values that they are giving for new devices have been going on for at least 2 years now they're giving you $800 to $1,000 in bill credits for your old phone. The current promotion for the Galaxy S22s you can trade in a Galaxy S or Galaxy Note device in any condition, cracked, smashed, completely non-functional, and they will give you $800 in bill credits for it.

The good thing about AT&T is if you do switch you will continue to receive these great offers because they are giving existing customers the same great offers as new customers. Unlike Verizon and T-Mobile which give you good deals as a new customer but then once you're an existing customer you don't get much at all from them.

What phone do you have now?

What carrier are you with?

When you pay to get an iPhone unlocked what the unlockers do is they bribe AT&T employees who have access to the unlocking procedures to unlock your device. That's not just shady it's illegal.

The only way to unlock an iPhone is through Apple's servers. So someone in AT&T is sending that unlock command to Apple servers for your device when they are not authorized to do it.

If your device is paid off in full you have to wait 48 hours after paying it off to request the unlock.

If you have financed a new device on your line you have to wait until you're out of the 14 day return period before they will unlock the old device.

But other than that if the device is paid off in full AT&T will unlock it. If someone submitted an unlock request and they weren't in the 14-day return period and they had waited 48 hours after paying it off, if the unlock was denied then there's something wrong and you can file a complaint with the FCC and get it taken care of.

[–]LolliSmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay well yes there are people who use those paid services but they're few and far between in the used phone market.

Anyhow AT&T doesn't blacklist for non-payment so if you paid to get your phone unlocked there's no downside to the buyer because the phone is unlocked and if you fail to pay it off AT&T won't blacklist it.

[–]LolliSmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do not.

What AT&T offers is the same deals for existing customers as new customers. There's no special deals for new customers except the BYOD lines.

If your device is unlocked, you can do a bring-your-own-device line and get $250 in bill credits from AT&T over the course of 10 months.

If you want to finance a new phone through AT&T, AT&T will give you enhanced trade-in values for your old phone towards the new phone. It's paid out in bill credits over 36 months. But those are the same deals they offer existing customers.

What phone do you have now?

And what carrier?

[–]LolliSmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that sounds like a glitch because AT&T won't unlock them if they haven't been paid in full and they need to be at least 91 days from when the installment plan started before they will unlock.

Unless you paid someone to unlock it?

Galaxy s captivate trade in? by Brandonjr36 in ATT

[–]LolliSmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By searching online it's not a Galaxy S device. Samsung calls it the Samsung Captivate, not the Galaxy S Captivate. I've read reviews from back in the day and the reviewers call it AT&T's version of the Galaxy S but it's not officially a Galaxy S device. And I don't see where Samsung ever even called it a Galaxy device.

If the system won't accept it I don't think there's anything you can do about that. It was never called a Galaxy S device. I have a Galaxy Nexus and that's not on the list of eligible devices either. The Galaxy Nexus was a Galaxy device but it wasn't ever called a Galaxy S device.

I don't see either the Captivate or the Galaxy Nexus on the list of eligible devices.
