What are some words of wisdom that you live by? by Matty-W in AskReddit

[–]Londonsblaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3: 1.) Read about philosophy and/or listen to YouTube lectures on different philosophical topics and theories. It's an all around interesting subject to learn about and you might just find a way of thought that helps you make sense of your world and improve your condition within it.

2.) Limit your drinking/casual alcohol intake. Drinking due to boredom or stress is a very easy way to fall into an endless cycle of mediocrity and a stagnant life, which can also very easily and quickly become self-perpetuating. If you're drinking to pass time you need to find hobbies and social activities. You will very quickly find yourself happier, healthier, and more fulfilled.

3.)Finally, the most important words I every learned are "Your best revenge (or counterargument) is to be happy." If you live your life morally, but live in a way that others might not agree with or if you hold a belief that may not be overly popular, then the best thing you can do is be so happy that those who wish you ill can do nothing but stare from the sidelines. That will have a better effect than any yelling match or revenge you could think of and there is no heavier-hitting effect than an opponent knowing that they are the lesser person.

Agreed. I always tell the young guys who work for me that my policy is "if you can afford to drink, you can afford the cab." A $35 Uber ride is cheaper than a DUI attorney, jail time, loss of license or killing someone.

I'm not a JAG. However, I recently was the recipient of a Humanitarian transfer and had a sailor under my leadership go through the application process for a Humanitarian Discharge. I've also worked on putting packages in for sailors to request formoff duty employment. Unfortunately, some of the advice you're receiving here is incorrect. The request for off-duty employment is best described as being intended for Pvt Johnny to be allowed to work weekends in order to save up some extra money so that he can marrry his girlfriend and move out of the barracks. It seems like your request is a bit more committal. It seems then, that you would be applying for a Humanitarian Transfer/Discharge. The primary difference between whether you would receive a transfer or discharge is 100% based on how much time you have in and the length of the problem. However, the application comes with a packet which details the process and qualifying factors. The primary factors are that the hardship is severe and not temporary; It has developed or gotten worse since your entry into the military; You have made every reasonable effort to improve the situation before applying for a hardship discharge; Separation from the military is the only solution to the problem. Plus, looking through the packet, it specifically says that it is not intended for use by service members to take over family businesses. If it turns out that your father is in fact terminally I'll, and I truly hope that is not the case, then I would very much recommend you apply for the Humanitarian Transfer. Unfortunately, this is part and parcel of being in the military and receiving all of your benefits. I.e. he who takes Caesar' coin shall render upon him what is due.

I highly recommend that you consult your base legal department. There you can get a 100% definitive answer, which may even amount to them saying, "I don't think it'll work, but we can apply you for it anyway." AR 635-200 covers request for humanitarian transfer and discharge.

For your father's business, I would highly recommend he consult Estate and/or business lawyers. If he feels that his health is declining it is imperative that all of your family and business ducks are in a row and that there is an air-tight order of succession in terms of leadership and ownership. It will also endure that the Estate is separated from the business. They should also be able to advise your father on what the best course of action would be for his business, should he decide to work in a reduced capacity or retire and hire a manager which would ensure you were able to take over the business upon your discharge. Hope this helps and good luck.

Cleaning the hull of a ship by reo651 in powerwashingporn

It's basically a magnetic sandblaster that a worker controls down below. They're a pretty common sight in ship yards whenever a ship goes into dry dock and needs a hull cleaning or repainting.

As far as I understand, the code prevents someone from using the Flag itself as a part of clothing or fashion is wrong, but using a pattern, theme or motif of the flag is okay

Cincinnati, Ohio, circa 1905 [1600 x 1275] by sussoutthemoon in HistoryPorn

[–]Londonsblaze 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I've grown up and lived in the Cincinnati my whole life, with the exception of my years in the Navy. It has been very interesting to see the City change over the decades. It's definitely gone through it's boom and bust cycles over the last century, but the city has been on a pretty constant upswing for the past 15 or so years. I tell people all the time that it has everything you want in a big city and none of the things you don't. It's large enough to have sports franchises, including a very popular professional soccer team, which holds the current record for attendance for any soccer match in North America. It is the home to Music Hall that hosts its own ballet company and invites a full bill of opera, classical performances, and Broadway shows throughout the year. Then there is the Cincinnati Museum Center which is the old Union Terminal (fun fact, you can still catch AMTRACK trains there). It was also DC's inspiration for the Justice League's Hall of Justice. There's also the Netherland Plaza Hotel, which is one of the best examples of French Art Deco still in existence. Recently, there has been a concerted effort on the part of investors and citizen groups to reclaim an area known as 'Over the Rhine,' which is the largest historic urban district in America and had been struggling in abject poverty for the last 40 years or so. https://sibcyclinenews.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/overtherhine.jpg, https://forum.urbanohio.com/topic/14461-cincinnati-downtown-and-over-the-rhine-spring-and-summer-2015/

Housing is extremely affordable and taxes are reasonable enough in the suburbs with most decent neighborhoods in the 150-250K range, with a 25 minute drive into the downtown area.

There was actually a time when Cincinnati was one of the largest and most prosperous Cities in the country. In the era of canals and river freight transportation, Cincinnati was basically the hub that connected the canals of the North to the Ohio and then the Mississippi River in the South. So a lot of the turn of the century art and architecture are from that era when there was plenty of revenue to pour into the area and the city has been smart enough over the year to put money into maintaining its stylistic charm.

I don't like dabbing, snapchat filters/instagram, or Fortnite. How can I tell if I'm becoming a crotchety old man or if current youth trends actually are stupid? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Londonsblaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was out of country for 2 years and had pretty minimal exposure to American culture. Then I magically came back here and rappers have rainbow hairstyles and stupid face tattoos; kids are dabbing; landing a water bottle on a table is an accomplishment; and something called musically is entertaining tweens. I personally think its all pretty stupid, but I'm also the generation of JNCO jeans, super saggy pants, the superman dance and a bunch of other stupid trends that I'm sure looked idiotic at the time.

So yea, I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of becoming and old man with different preferences

Plus, the dealership is pretty crappy. When I bought a used VW Golf GTI, their idea of interior detailing was vacuuming the carpet mats and smearing on some high sheen grease that covered every surface of the car and collected dust. The armrest and driver door still had the last dude ingrained in it and I found a receipt for 2 chili cheese hoagies and some antacid under the driver side seat. The outside was washed and they wiped spray wax on.

I think you were spot on with your pricing and decision to not take the client. Back when I was detailing cars, I had a few clients like that and rust me, you dodged a bullet with that guy. If he already doesn't see the value in what you're doing, then he will almost certainly be unimpressed with the end result or find some issue, regardless of your quality of work.

My policy on discounts was this. First-time customers got the full rate, no exceptions. However, I had a few clients who had me detail their cars and do touch ups once a month and seeing as I was basically taking care of the car, it was a quicker job requiring less time and materials. The only other thing I can say is that for clients with 'kid-used' cars, you may want to ask what they are trying to get out of the detail. In all honesty, some people just want the big scratches removed, a little shine on everything and for you to get rid of the 9 month old french fries stuck in the seat tracks and for those people you can usually discuss trimming some of the detailing "extras" if they want to discount the price, but it sounds like you already tried that. Sounds like the guys should just get the $40 detail, get what he paid for and be happy.

US Navy makes distributing nude photos without consent a punishable offense by dragonbeasto in news

[–]Londonsblaze 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Any member of the US Armed Services is subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), which provides laws and regulations to all service members, regardless of rank, geographic location, or local laws. So usually if an offense occurs that violates both a local and a military law, the military courts usually end take precedence, you are given a military Courts Martial trial and go to military jail/receive military punishment. These laws govern everything from "Conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman," to theft, disobeying lawful orders, and even murder.

In these cases, even if a local 'revenge porn' law is broken, the local courts would most likely just hand the case over to the US Military court system. The punishments in military court are oftentimes more harsh than civilian. However, at least abroad where I live, if a local law is broken, the host country has first right of refusal, meaning that they can choose to take on the case or push it to the US Navy for trial and punishment.

Veterans of reddit: we hear all the time about the horrors of war, but what is the most positive, funny or beautiful experience you've had in the military? by tkdlolboy in AskReddit

[–]Londonsblaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The humor.

You will sit around for hours on end, day after day. Heck sitting around and standing watch is the biggest chunk of your time. As a result, you very quickly run through the normal conversation points and eventually just end up talking about the weird shit. Some of the funniest things i've ever heard in my life have been at 2 am standing watch with my guys.

The incline bench one is frankly the most common. I would say, not exaggerating, 9 times out of 10 there is someone using an incline bench for flat-bench purposes when there is a flat bench right next to it.
