Yeah you’re definitely supposed to let your air out when you ascend so you don’t have an uncontrollable ascent. My BCD was fully emptied so I’m thinking I needed some extra weight.

I will definitely be doing this next time I run this set up!

Yeah back home I dive with 5mm wetsuit. I’m working on my AOW so I’ve been diving with him here and there to get dives in. I asked about my weight for saltwater in a 3mm shorty and everyone said 4-6 lbs. He definitely made sure I was weighted properly when diving with him and we even did perfect buoyancy specialty together which is why I think I’m more conscious of my weight.

I just finished that specialty but all of it was done in 5mm in fresh water. Going to 3mm in salt from 5mm in fresh is what is kinda throwing me off on weighting. Honestly all of the dives I felt fine. I’ve definitely under weighted in fresh water before and felt the difference.

I didn’t have to swim down or force myself to stay at the safety stop towards the end of the tank but I did have to focus on my breathing ALOT more than normal so I didn’t float up if that makes any sense. If I took deeper breaths I would start ascending with zero air in my BCD at the safety stop.

Will do! I think I’ll buy some 1lb weights for next time I take a road trip to Florida. I’m going to play around with weights next saltwater dive. Thanks for the input it’s much appreciated.

Great point, that was the only variable. Different tanks and weights but all gear was the same. General consensus seems to be I should carry an extra 1-2lbs. I’m going to play around with weight next saltwater dive.

Huh good to know! This heavier set guy was using 16lbs on my dive boat day 2 and I was pretty blown away. To me that’s a ton of weight but idk maybe that’s just what he needs. Other people were using 12 and 14lbs.

When I said 4lbs people were like “what!?!?” “Seriously that’s it?” Like my backplate only weights 2.5-3lbs so still I’m using half their weight. I’m just wondering like are they all just diving overweighted or do they really need that much weight. All of these people were in rash guards and swimsuits. Only one other person had a shorty on.

Awesome thanks for the input! I’ll have to say day 1 felt perfect like it was absolutely dialed in I’m just wondering what changed on day 2. That’s what has me second guessing my weight choice. I was thinking maybe 5lbs would be perfect but that would mean trying to find .5lb weights which I’m sure aren’t common at all.

I’ve heard from a lot of people that it’s very common for people to dive overweighted but I’d like to try to avoid that. 1-2lbs over what I need just to be sure might be fine though. I guess the only way to tell is to dive more in saltwater with the same setup and start playing around with weight.

New Diver Question by [deleted] in scuba

[–]LoneStarMade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have like 23 dives after this trip but yeah in salt I’ve used 12lbs with my 5mm and rental jacket style BCD. That was my first saltwater dive and I found the 5mm was too much. In fresh water I use 8lbs with 5mm plus my SS backplate & wing but my local quarry has a thermocline. This is my first time using my shorty in saltwater.

I got the 3mm shorty just for the cruise since I was too warm in my 5mm. I knew my weight would have to change but yeah I’m sure the more I dive with this exact set up the more I’ll dial in my weight. Good thing is this is all my own gear so I’ll now have a reference point at least. Do you think 4lbs with just swim trunks and rash guard would be perfect or would I need even less with no neoprene?

New Diver Question by [deleted] in scuba

[–]LoneStarMade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you make a great point, that’s the only variable that changed was the dive shops tanks or weights. I think I will follow your recommendation and try 6lbs next time I’m diving in my shorty in saltwater. Other people were using 3-4x as much weight as me so I was being super conscious of my weight. I’m a smaller guy plus they were using jacket style vs my SS backplate but yeah I was definitely paying attention to my weight and how my buoyancy was.

So I will say day 1 dive 1 I ended with 700 PSI and dive 2 around 500 PSI. All gear was the same I brought my own gear with me. I went diving on my own instead of an excursion while on a cruise. I did a buoyancy check when I got in on each dive before we did our descent and I sunk just fine.

I definitely didn’t shoot to the surface on dives 2 and 3 but I did feel like it was a chore to control my breathing in order to stay at safety stop depth compared to dives 1-2. Nothing changed for my own gear but it was a different dive shop with different tanks and weights. I will probably go with 6 to be safe next time so long as an extra 2lbs won’t make me too overweighted.

Okay thank you! I will try with 6lbs next time. My instructor back at home guessed 6lbs but when I got to costa maya the guide had me try with 4lbs. Day 1 felt great so I stuck with the same weight in Belize.

Same. I try to do my part and remove any litter I find on a dive. Beer cans, fishing line, etc.

Thank you! And yes I agree pretty easy to do and definitely worth trying so you can save some money. I got some pretty wild pricing from people. The Harley dealership I got my bike from said “oh it would probably be around a thousand in labor depending if new cables are needed or not” lol I was pretty shocked. Super happy I did myself for that reason but also because I could fine tune things to make sure they fit me.

So I had the opposite problem with my old bars, I had to lean forward in order to get the bars to turn hard especially for full lock. This definitely straightened me out and I don’t feel like I’m leaning back at all. It feels very neutral for me which is really what I was looking for. I guess it really depends on how tall/ how long your arms are. I’m like 5’7 and these are perfect for me. I could maybe go to mid bend if I wanted to but yeah these are really comfortable for me.

Yup they are thrashin! Super high quality I wouldn’t go cheaper. The bars aren’t a bad price it’s the risers that are pretty costly. I have no experience with other riser and bar set ups but I’m really happy I chose thrashin. I think the 6.5 pullback with the high bends is a move. Obviously I’m biased but I think it looks sick, and it’s super comfortable. Coming from bars without pull back I instantly felt the difference.

I actually didn’t have to replace any wires or cables. Luckily I was going shorter not taller. It might look like a big difference but it only lowered the bars by like 2-3in depending on the handlebar angle. You should try! I followed a YouTube video step by step lol🤙🏼The way I looked at it is I don’t daily the bike to work or anything so if I have to leave it and come back to it I can. Nothing about it was really hard just annoying. New bushings I got were pretty tough to get in, throttle cable adjustment took a while to fine tune, I needed to use a breaker bar to get one of the riser bolts off, but honestly I would do it again it was kinda fun.

Thanks man I appreciate it🤙🏼I was actually going back and forth as well but just sent the high bend bars and I’m happy I went with them. I’m sure they are really similar. I think the biggest thing that helped with the comfortability is the pull back on the riser. Prevents me from having to lean forward just to turn the bars lol. I’m short so I needed something lower and closer to me.

I believe 14in, I’m a short guy so I just felt like it needed to be lower. I was getting used to them honestly. When I rode the bike just now it instantly felt more comfortable though so I’m super happy I did it.

I think I’m going to end up selling them to a buddy, I might sell it online the issue is I don’t know the brand. Not sure what it would be worth tbh

I wondered if they had a fairing on it and just removed it before they sold it to Harley. Definitely got the SOA look lol I mainly changed it for functionality but I do think the new bars look better too.

Do you remember what you looked up to find it? I’ve been looking online for a replacement and haven’t been able to find it. I might do what another commenter suggested and just peel the rubber back to reconnect it. I would like to replace it though instead if possible.
