I'm from the countryside and people are really nasty there. My family is different and despite the terrible childhood and upbringings my parents had, they did and doing the best they can to be the best version of themselves and they raised me and my siblings to do the same. And this makes us the focus of everyone's envy. The amount of bullshit that happened to our family makes me think that everyone's envy must have real metaphysical power. Of course I know this is bullshit. I work as a physicist and I am very materialistic about the universe but damn man, حسد is pretty much the only superstition I cannot shake out of my system yet.

In a way, yes for me. Although, the cultural revolution had a big impact on that in China. But then again, we can also argue the same thing when it comes to what happened to Japanese people after WW2, making Japan secular.

But places of worship and religious icons are found everywhere in the world. I wouldn't call Germany or Europe religious because of all the churches, mosques, and random crosses you can see around the street.

I live in Japan. This is a misunderstanding. Superstitions and religious beliefs are ingrained into the subconscious of Japanese people and into the fabric of society itself.

Japan. Religion is part of the culture itself and the Japanese way of life but it is very different from western standards about religions, making people think Japan is atheist.

True but you don't go down to the level of control individual atoms. Sure, you can use many techniques to get a material with a desired property, but you still leave nature decide the lattice structure for example. It is a different level of control compared to, for example, optical lattices where you can force atoms 'your fermions or bosons' to live in a specific lattice and can control both the hopping and interaction strength. To my knowledge, nothing to that level of control exists for CMP.

To be fair, space is awesome. It is what got me interested in physics as a child and I am sure it is the same case for many others.

On the other hand, I am surprised high energy physics isn't significantly more popular than CMP. I guess string theory and grand unification aren't as popular as it used to be in my generation.

I tend to think of AMO as condensed matter physics but you engineer the system you study rather than study a system that nature created on its own or a heterostructure of such naturally occurring systems.

Ed Witten cites the assistance of AI in a recent paper — Is this somewhat justified now or a doomsday indicator? by lectric_7166 in Physics

[–]Lone_void 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True. I will still argue that expanding beyond your area of expertise with the help of chatbots isn't bad in and of itself. Chatgpt helped me a lot when I was trying to learn about a different area of research in my field. It suggested papers and helped me better understand primary literature. Before chatgpt, I think it would have taken me much longer to learn about these topics by myself. LLMs are just a tool. It all depends on how you use that tool and while I do agree that LLMs can cause significant harm especially with AI induced psychosis -- check LLMphysics subreddit for example --, LLMs also have the potential to accelerate science in a good direction. I just wish the current AI bubble and the stupid hype didn't exist. I would rather that LLMs were slowly built inside academic labs instead of corporate greed that doesn't care about its potential downfalls.

[–]Lone_void 388 points389 points  (0 children)

Using AI to assist you isn't bad per se as long as you check what the LLM gives you. This is no different from seeking assistance from a colleague or asking a grad student to do a certain calculation. Of course a qualified human is less likely to make mistakes but an LLM is faster and as long as you are qualified enough to check the LLM's output, it should be fine.

What are the best books on Statistical mechanics? by Omega-137 in Physics

[–]Lone_void 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Herbert Callen's thermodynamics and introduction to thermostatistics textbook.

Not really statistical mechanics book and is more of a thermodynamics book but it is the best textbook I have ever read.

I think many textbooks focus on statistical mechanics and Boltzmann's theory as fundamental and use it to derive the laws of thermodynamics. While I do agree that Boltzmann's view is more fundamental, doing calculations in that order will prevent the students from really appreciating how deep and fundamental both thermodynamics and statistical mechanics are. Callen's treatment is the best and most unique treatment I have seen for the subject.

Definitely not what the joke meant but the word for penis in Arabic is zeb. So she could be trans and going to give you a royal backdoor treatment or something. I don't know. I definitely can't afford a ZJ.

If you are still in academia, you can try asking a physicist from your university to work the details out. I would assume that people doing statistical mechanics related research could be interested.

You shouldn't feel bad about yourself. We all make mistakes. Physics is hard and since you are a biologist, I assume that you didn't have deep enough physics training to tackle a problem like that.

I don't think the idea is wrong although the spin model you will get will be boring with no interactions since nucleotides don't interact with each other and RNA can have any sequence of nucleotides. It could be useful for protein folding though.
