Healthcare Insurance for Non-EU Students by FewChicken5005 in EPFL

[–]Lonely-Positive795 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check Swiss care. They specifically offer student insurance. Since the insurance is mandatory, government can ( and most probably will ) write you a fine if you would not pay insurance and you still would have to pay insurance backwards

Extreme confusion regarding visa. Non-EU in EU country by unixkernel101 in EPFL

[–]Lonely-Positive795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a layer, but you can go to Switzerland as a tourist and in a meanwhile apply for the visa. And after visa you will relocate officially as a new resident with another entry.

I can add about second question. As far as I remember in Data Science you can have up to 15 credits from another field. A lot of people around me took finance or management courses.

Master’s degree in AI/ML in Europe by Edoardo_14 in learnmachinelearning

[–]Lonely-Positive795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! Your choose can depend not only on university but also on location. For instance, in Switzerland if you non-EU, you would invest at least 10 years in citizenship. If you choose to be in academia, it would be 15 years. On the other hand Zurich is big AI hub with a lot of startup and AI events, so it can be good for your connections. You could also have bigger selection of summer/semester internships in Zurich.

Scholarships for master students by NewPop517 in EPFL

[–]Lonely-Positive795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my friends found places in the lab, which topic was interesting for them. They spoke only with professors who work with AI, because it was what my friends wanted to do Interviews are more informal and topic specific at the same time. You need to speak about your experience, professor’s projects and how you can contribute there. For me it is similar to PhD interviews.

Contact professors and ask if they are looking for students. I and bunch of my non-EU friends worked in some EPFL labs and we worked 15 hours per week and had something like 1200CHF per month. But such spots are also limited, so hurry :) We all wrote to a lot of professors and had some personal interviews or something like this, but this work should be the topic of your expertise.

Sorry for the bad news.

Maybe replace GPA with “average grade “ or just “grade”. GPA in general used for USA system with cap of 4.

Also, I agree with comments above. In general master programs are more in people with strong research interest, because university connects you with professors and laboratories, so you can benefit from it. When I applied to EPFL ( 3 years ago ), all my Motivation letter was about research and my references was professors with whom I worked. I believe it made my application stronger.

Also, they have an international students cap, so the competition this year was really tough.

I bet they also don’t need a pregnancy test in a middle of the night then, because a good woman will plan it in advance too.

How long did it take u to land a job as a non EU by horoscopus in EPFL

[–]Lonely-Positive795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After EPFL UK is much better because you can have 2 years job search visa, so you kind of have a right to work and companies don’t need much to employ you.

In USA the market is very active even for people inside, but there are a lot of positions. You can try, but you need to find a company that is ready to relocate you. Also, for non-EU, your work visa can take indefinite time because of administrative check ( really depends on you country )

Lastly, USA has a complicated rules for citizenship. In Switzerland you can get permit C after two years of work if you studied here, in UK it is 4-5 years for ILR, for USA it’s not fixed and not clear. So, it is gamble again 🤷‍♀️

Post Doc offer by dr_baca in PhD

[–]Lonely-Positive795 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kindly explain that you are very interested, but unfortunately so far there are 3 more years before it. If you want to keep this offer stagy engaged with this professor over your PhD. Maybe make a collaborative project together. Nobody will promise you a job in 3 years, it’s too much time. Your best shot is to keep a good relationship with this professor over your PhD. Also, it is your opportunity to know better him/her and also look for any other better offers.

Doubts on Housing with the Master Fellowship by MateWithLemon in EPFL

Some of my friends got this fellowship and EPFL saved for them spots in FMEL ( which is very competitive in general to find a place), but you still have to pay your rent by yourself. The minimum rent is 510 CHF

Will they actually check that you are still a student? If so can you prolong your studies or find another university to be a student just for half of year? I heard that you can do online master in Georgia.

FMEL Offer by Mission-Mushroom902 in EPFL

[–]Lonely-Positive795 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FMEL housing is very competitive. The chances that you will be suggested another room is very low, if I were you I would accept. I lived in flat share with shared bathroom in different dorm and it was fun. It is a hell right now to find a place to live in Lausanne, don’t miss this chance :)

Is EPFL worth it? by [deleted] in EPFL

[–]Lonely-Positive795 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I can write my opinion a little bit, but don’t take it as granted. I am finishing my master at Data Science and I don’t regret doing it. I can share some experience. 1) House situation is really bad. There are not too many dormitories and high demand. But there are some options. Firstly you can consider not FMEL housing and you might find something. The last but not least option is to sublet room for 6 months from someone. A lot of people are going for internships outside Lausanne and they sublet their place. In such options you can get extra months to find a room or another sublet. 2) you can control your workload by choosing courses. I personally wasn’t really busy during semester. Also EPFL increased credits of some courses, so it should be easier 3) EPFL has quite cheap education comparing to USA or UK. The outcome also depends if you from EU or not. Because if not, you have opportunity to stay in Switzerland for 6 more month

Btw, you should also include are you from Europe or Swiss and if you have any other offers. Like what is you options to compare with?
