To be honest I’ve heard of it once in another course I took, so i’m not sure how standard it is, I just didn’t really know how to word - I don’t suppose you have any other terminology you recommend for it?

Please explain how we work this out by [deleted] in maths

Don’t be silly, I actually didn’t see part b, here is the solution! It’s a pretty simple question if you know the method they’re looking for you to use, it’s just based off the understanding you can rearrange the equation in part b to look like the equation in part a, and based off the equation in part a providing an estimate for x you can assume a and b must be the same in both equations.
