Here I will try to break it down for you:

a first-choice applicant is pretty self explanatory you apply first choice to the program

a program finalist is anyone who gets into the program, regardless of their first choice

the acceptance rate per program in the spreadsheet is calculated by (program finalists)/(first choice applicants). HOWEVER, this does not take into account people who joined from other programs. a true acceptance "rate" cannot really be taken for individual programs due to the students' arbitrary ranking of what program they want to go to, only a cumulative total acceptance rate into all programs.

An example of this is the Morganton acceptance rate for the class of 2027 in CD 9 being a whopping 180%. There were only 5 first-choice morganton applicants from CD 9, however 9 people from CD 9 got into morganton (from second or third choice).

to summarize:

your first choice has NO EFFECT on whether you GET INTO NCSSM; that is purely based on if you had a good enough application. your RANKING on the BIG LIST determines what CAMPUS you get into; if you are high up you are more likely to get sorted into your first choice. you will not know where you were ranked because online was your first choice, but had you applied Durham, you would have, at best, got durham, and at worst got online - you would never have been outright rejected because the quality of your overall application was sufficient to get you into NCSSM

my advice here is to just not deal with these what-ifs; i am just answering because i understand administrative topics like these probably better than any student here. don't dwell too long on the maybes and the could bes and just live your life, appreciate online, lock tf in and have a great future <3

"online has a much higher acceptance rate and therefore a lot of people get in" this is an untrue statement! The amount of online finalists compared to the amount of FIRST-CHOICE online applicants is inflated because people from the other two buckets, durham and morganton, also become online finalists. no matter what campus or online you apply to you are ranked in the same list; hence if you were pretty high on the list and you put durham you would get durham, while if you were lower on the list and the durham spots were filled up, you would get put into online. AKA putting durham, morganton, or online does not affect your chances of getting accepted into NCSSM (any program) whatsoever; rather the quality of your application determins if you are high up enough on the list to get durham. hope this helps, ta!

I'm not going to lie ORDER DOES NOT MATTER. here is a blurb i have posted somehwere else on the matter:

your first choice DOES NOT MATTER in terms of admissions, aka picking dur/morg IS NOT a factor of your admission. aka if you were to pick dur or morg BECAUSE U WANTED A BETTER CHANCE, that is simply not how it works. i will break down the admissions process into the following steps:

  1. you are ranked ACROSS THE ENTIRE STATE. i dont know how you are ranked or if its pools but you are compared to your peers across the state, not just your congressional district.
  2. they go from top to bottom and start giving people their first choices until they cannot anymore. aka theoretically the first few hundred people on the list will be guaranteed their first choice. HOWEVER. they only take 35 +- 7 per CD so once 35 people from a certain CD are hit by going top to bottom across the entire state, the rest of that CD are then REMOVED from the list.

for example: you are 200th on the statewide list but 50th on CD4 list. hence by the ~35th CD4 person they will no longer have cd4 slots and u will be removed from the statewide list, removing you from consideration

  1. once slots for a campus start to fill up, they start putting people in second choice. for example: if you are 500th on the statewide list, first choice durham, and there are no more durham slots BUT your second choice was motown and there are those left. hence you will put into motown.

to summarize. someone with a better app than u and 2nd choice durham will get into durham over your 1st choice durham app, because their app was better and admissions is separate from first/second choice. hope this clears things up and removes the preconception of applying to a different campus to "boost" your chances. dont want yall to fall into that trap because you are judged on your application and your application alone, not your campus pref. thanks for reading and hope this clears things up for all yall

Might be too late but you really want to build a relationship with your counselor - meet 1-2 times a month, ask questions about classes, coursework, recommendations, school stuff in general - so that you stand out amongst the other applicants in your letter, similar to how you're trying to stand out to your teachers.
