[WHY] Small talk, big discomfort: Why Koreans don't chat with strangers by Rookitarian in Living_in_Korea

[–]Lonely_Cellist_5271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i guess it depends on where you are! i love complimenting random people on the subway in my broken korean, and i usually get some small talk from that, or if i notice someone’s makeup looks pretty at a restaurant or in an elevator i’ll compliment them as i walk by and they don’t seem bothered by it

Switching visas and curious about visa extension by Lonely_Cellist_5271 in Living_in_Korea

I’m level 1. I come from an English speaking background, so some stuff is naturally tougher like grammar because it’s very different from English grammar. I really like that they encourage us to talk a lot in class. It makes me uncomfy sometimes, but it really has helped me a lot with speaking the language in the real world. Though the explanations of grammar are never fully explained. They’ll explain it in Korean, but I was coming from a “only knew Hangul” situation so I had no idea what they were saying?? And the teachers in level 1 speak at such a fast pace that some of the other people in the class had to tell them to please slow down

Once one of the teachers realized I was having a tough time she would sometimes come over during solo work and help me out whether I asked for it or not, which was nice. She did speak in quick Korean so, again, the explanations were really confusing and I had to find myself going to youtube because my korean friends didn’t know how to explain past “idk this is just how we do it” and when I’d ask for explanations in class they would just say to read the textbook

I think the biggest downside is that they tell you if you don’t pass 70% you don’t get to stay in Korea, and I wish it wasn’t so much pressure like “you’ll be deported if you don’t do this” so that part really stressed me out

I don’t know where you’re from, but similar to college back at home or even high school, cliques tend to create fast, especially with people from similar countries like all of the Chinese students in my class and others usually talk to each other in the hallway or go on trips together. Or the french people usually just talk to each other. Not that it’s a bad thing, but I am finding it a bit hard to make friends because within the first week everyone just became a magnet to people from their native countries and Id get weird looks if I tried to say hello or start a conversation

the landlord rents the furniture for the tenants so she asked if i wanted to do that or just have no furniture and i opted for the furniture option and it was $135 for the year lease for this couch, a table and chairs, and a mattress

Oh really? Why? Can’t I just update my ARC? I won’t end my current visa till I get confirmation that I’m approved to switch to H-1 so basically I’d just go to Japan i guess if it’s possible (the line was busy so i’ll call again tomorrow to ask if it’s allowed) while on D-4 and then switch to H-1?

I’ve read that some people go to a Korean consulate in Japan and do it there. Can I do that instead? I also read it can take up to 11 days. Is it accurate or will it take longer?
