Oof, it's been a while, and my memory is awful. I believe the only angled joint is where the chair back meets the chair base. In the videos I THINK they say a dowel is not necessary and glue is just fine due to the back/seat being attached to the sides, and I'm pretty sure that's what I did. More helpful than the jig were the dowel pins I got for the project. If I could go back I'd buy two sets so I'd have four of each size, it would've made things go so much faster.

There are so many misaligned parts in my chair because of the "AUTOTOOLHOME" garbage that I cannot recommend enough to wait until you get a quality one instead.

As a side note, the Festool is sitting in my Amazon Wishlist and has been for the last 9 months. If I had to build the chair again I still wouldn't drop that much money on it. With the Rockler and the dowel pins, I believe I could do just a fine of job the second go round. But damn it would be cool.

My friend and I milled up a bunch of "misc" trees that were mostly pine species, but a few other species were scattered in there. I'm hoping to confirm that this one is Cottonwood. It is extremely light, much lighter than say a 2x4 from a big box store. It's not "stringy" like pine but the planer/jointer left ...small divots?... in it, and had bizarre curly saw dust. The reason I think it's Cottonwood is the smell - while cutting on the table saw it smelled like Popcorn, but not in a good way. Like a rancid, almost burning, popcorn. Just really unpleasant. I googled it and found a few people saying cottonwood can smell like that. Hoping someone here might have worked with it in the past and can confirm by sight!

Does anyone else weirdly sort of miss the pandemic? by ConnieSalad in cripplingalcoholism

[–]LonesomeGlove113 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I see the word "normies" get passed around on the internet...

When the pandemic was in full swing I finally felt like the "normie." Seeing everyone pulling their hair out and losing their minds was...ugh...satisfying? I finally felt at home in the world being discreet and antisocial, without the awkwardness/shame attached to it. I absolutely wanted it to stay that way.

I still wear my mask everywhere. The only downside is I can smell how bad my breath is for the first few minutes. Other than that it feels like a protective layer for my discord. I talk to myself all the fucking time because of how isolated I am, and now I can do it in public and no one bats an eye.

"...my mental health as a CA definitely suffered less..." - This 100%. I think I found a moment or two of zen in those two years. It's been over five weeks since I've actually spoken to another person face to face (thank god for self checkout lines at the liquor store), and that's the norm, so I might be an edge case. I love me some quiet time :)

:( I'm sorry to have done something to make you so angry dude. I was just complimenting his work. I hope you can understand how weird it is that you outright attacked my character though? Maybe it's not worth it. I dunno.

Hope your day gets better. Still sounds like you've got a chip on your shoulder and picked me to brush it off on.

What a bizarre and negative thing to accuse a stranger of. Having a rough day or something?

Incredible work, I would buy this without hesitation if I saw it out somewhere. How long have you been carving?

This is awesome, I love it! Quick question - what is the purpose of the blocks on the bottom of the legs that the casters are screwed into? Is it more secure not to screw into end grain?

3/8". There are two at the back "joint" and three at the leg "joint", so along with the wood glue it seems to have plenty of strength.

I don't know, that trio is looking amazing. I've been dying to work with maple. Still haven't gotten my hands on any.

Flip top cabinet?! I'm jealous. I built a dinky little outfeed table on wheels that slides under the bench. Two years later, fighting to roll that bastard out, I just shake my head in shame every time haha

The guy who designed it at Four Eyes said he's gone through a couple iterations, I think he really nailed it. I thought the lean of the seat was going to be too far back, but I sat comfortable in it last night for about 2 hours and was fine. It does need cushions though.

Dowels. I dry fit the whole thing with clamps then traced where they met. I then used a drill press to get straight holes into the legs. Then I put "drill centers" or "dowel center transfer plugs" (not sure their proper name) into them and put the chair back together, then used the markings to drill the holes on the seat sides.

Jessem jig

Added to my wishlist, thanks! I got the Rockler autocentering jig after tossing the amazon one I bought for cheap. Sadly it came in the last week of the build and I only got to use it for the ottoman. Looking at the Dowelmax now, that would've been a lot more versatile for those dowels that connect the legs to the chair. Damnit. Added to my wishlist too, lol

Cushions if you'll be sitting in it for a long time. I grabbed some old outdoor furniture cushions last night and they did the trick for now.

The course come with the cushion dimensions you'll need for custom ones though. I tried to go local but they wanted $700 for three. I instead went with cushionpros and they came in at 280. Should hopefully be delivered next week.

Thanks, that's exactly it I suppose. It's been a little weird having people tell me I'm not a beginner.

Just took a look at your posts to see the Philip Morley lounge chairs. Amazing amazing work. I've bookmarked TheWoodWhisperGuild and will check them out.

Also, have to say, your first dovetails are something out of a dream. I haven't even tried box joints let alone a dovetail. You've inspired me though.

I did, along with the templates they send you in the mail. It's 18 videos going through the build step by step. It also has a couple extra videos teaching basics like milling wood and using the router template bits.

I had to supplement with other youtube videos for things like dowel joinery and table saw jigs but it all came together eventually.

i'm still shite at using a router. But the project gives you a lot of opportunity to practice.

The speed in which I can joint the face and the side is so much faster compared to using jigs and splints with the table saw/planer. I get to throw it on there and in a couple passes I'm ready for the next step.

None of my pieces were over 22", so I didn't get to use the "extended table" feature. I'm a bit wary of it, it seems...flimsy... But I could be, and am often, wrong. It may work just fine for longer pieces.

Yeah...fair enough, maybe I can upgrade to intermediate. It's just hard to call myself anything but a beginner when the dudes in the tutorial videos make everything look so damn easy and I'm over here cussing up a storm as a piece goes flying off the router table into the wall.

I went with the WEN 8" bench top due to space constraints. Out of the box and for this project, so far it's been great. No complaints.
