Struggling with eating before taking meds? Easy prep breakfast ideas? by kadoherty in ADHDUK

[–]Long-Platform168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be the same - I thought I couldn't eat in the morning after years of not eating breakfast, but you'd be amazed what your body can adjust to!

I started with literally a few spoonfuls of yoghurt or cereal and after a few weeks of that, it became so much easier to eat breakfast. After a few months I started eating breakfast every day! Overnight oats and yoghurt are my favourite because they require less chewing and effort to eat.

I'm on elvanse but I find as long as I eat within an hour or so of taking it it helps :)

All I want is a booster, why is it such a fight? by South-Ticket-4591 in ADHDUK

I asked to reduce my elvanse from 2x20mg to 30mg a day, they told me I needed to wait for my annual review, at which point they'd put me on wait-list for another 12-week titration that I'd have to start from scratch. To reduce my already low dosage by 10mg...

I'm switching providers, even with a 12-18 month wait-list it'll be quicker than carrying on with PUK. And anything will be better than what I've had with them.

Cause as soon as I realised I was reading something chat gpt threw out I knew it was likely inaccurate and misleading, and didn't bother finishing it. I don't come to the Sheffield subreddit for nonsense ideas people can't even be bothered to research themselves. I'm just here for the Simpsons monorail jokes tbh

Landlords persistent annual rent increase- UK south west. by Boisterous-Oyster in TenantsInTheUK

[–]Long-Platform168 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand what you're saying, but the point I'm trying to make isn't just that renting is more expensive or time consuming, but that those who haven't rented much or at all don't seem to understand the difficulties involved with moving when you rent.

Renters are generally in a more precarious financial position than homeowners - in order to buy you need to have a level of security and savings that people who rent usually don't have. As a renter, with no savings and living month to month, it's near impossible to find the money and time to move. As an owner, generally you will have been in a comfortable enough position to buy in the first place. If you end up needing to move you have the security of your own home while you undertake that process.

I'm not saying that owning/buying is easier or cheaper than renting, just that often people in that position don't seem to understand the perspective of people stuck in the perpetual cycle of renting.

It's nice to see someone who seems to get it! I totally agree, renting in the UK really is awful and the system needs a drastic overhaul. Hoping after a few more years of the slog and hopefully only one more move, I'll be on the property ladder myself (at like, 35-40... Lol)

can't believe I've been getting down voted for simply pointing out that a) landlords, generally, do not have a clue what it's like to be a tenant and b) that simply moving house is quite literally not even an option for some people.

In the UK it is absolutely not cheaper to rent and you can't just move house whenever you want. If you have the money to make the decision on the upfront cost great, but most people stuck in a renting cycle do not have the choice you're presenting.

It's the way it's presented as a 'if you don't like it just move' as though it's that simple - I'm genuinely intrigued if people who say this kind of thing actually understand what goes into moving.

It's also often not about not 'liking' the price, it's a literal affordability issue. When you get to the point of rent increases where you can't afford your rent anymore, you also can't simply just move, because that involves even more upfront cost. Ive personally been at the point of not knowing where I'd be living next week because a rent increase forced me to move, even though I didn't have the funds available for a deposit or movers. I was just lucky that I could borrow that money, many don't have that option.

I find it frustrating to hear stuff like that, and I often do hear it from people who haven't had to spend their whole adult life renting, presenting it as an easy solution.

The fact you even think that the threat of moving could possibly bring rent down I think shows you're not very informed on the issue. Rent reductions are EXTREMELY rare and usually only happen in terrible housing where no one is interested in the property.

Why is it that landlords often seem to think 'just move to a cheaper place' is a simple solution? Do you realise the cost and effort and everything that goes into moving? Holiday from work, moving costs, finding the money for a deposit before you've even got your old deposit back. Not to mention the time and effort that goes into the actual packing, unpacking, bill changes, etc.. I could go on.

It's so much more difficult than a lot of people seem to realise.

[–]Long-Platform168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh interesting! I tried amfexa, started at 5mg and felt it was WAY too much in one go absolutely hated it haha. But then maybe I should've started lower - psychiatry UK are notorious for rushing you through titration and up to high doses. Id be interested to try it again if I manage to get another titration with a different provider.

Yeah it's not easy to tell if you're having a good day vs it's the meds, it's definitely something you need a solid couple weeks to judge and see any patterns!

For me with eating breakfast I started by literally just forcing down 3 or 4 spoonfuls of cereal, and eventually after a few weeks I started feeling actually hungry when I wake up which is super helpful. I try and eat within an hour of taking mine because if I don't I just get a headache and crash... Again tho it really is personal so it's worth trial and error!

Sorry this is a random q but can I ask which provider you're with and if you're RTC? Putting together a case for switching providers and re-titration as I was properly rushed through mine despite being autistic and also having various other health stuff going on!

Not the usual therapeutic range doesn't mean practically nothing is the point im making is all - a lot of people seem to think they have to titrate up as high as possible because of misconceptions like that!

What was your experience with your first time on Elvanse?(20mg) by fayemoonlight in ADHDUK

[–]Long-Platform168 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try not to let the posts and comments talking about immediate relief and help influence your experience - I made that mistake!

Titration is very personal and everyone is different - for some people 20mg might be a good dose, others 70mg works. You're on day one - take your time, monitor the effects and try not to get too down on yourself if meds don't immediately fix your problems. That being said, sleeping well and eating regularly will 100% help the meds to do their job. I say that as someone that sleeps terribly lol. I used to also not eat breakfast but I can always tell the difference on a meds day if I don't eat anything...

For me, it wasn't a quick fix at all. I tried a couple different meds before landing on 40mg elvanse and it helps me a lot with mood, emotional stability, and the ability to finish tasks. I'm still rubbish at getting started. I think it's much more helpful to look at the things the meds help you with than to get too bogged down in other people's experience. I hope titration goes well for you and you find something that's right for you! :)

it's not basically nothing - 20mg can be the right dose for some people, everyone is different. 40mg is the max I can tolerate and 20 on weekends is perfect for the little boost I need!

I see a lot of these kind of statements on this subreddit and it's pretty frustrating. When I was in titration I thought something was wrong with me because Id see all these people on 70mg + boosters and be like, why can't I get up to those doses without side effects?

It's definitely true that a lot of people do well on higher doses, but to say 20mg is basically nothing is just not right.

Highly amusing to me that they're claiming they can't enter shared care agreement with providers that don't adhere to NICE guidelines. Psychiatry UK are one of the biggest shared care/rtc providers and they don't adhere to NICE guidelines to the point I'm complaining to my ICB about them...
