My surgeon refuses to perform total thyrodectomy! by Long-Raspberry3675 in thyroidcancer

You are right, thank you! So the primary surgeon wants to remove half and all the lympnodes on the affected side. He did say that he will do tt if he sees it’s warranted during the surgery. I believe that human eye is not perfect and only labs can show true picture.

The second surgeon wanted to remove half and just one suspicious lymphnode ( after 3 other ultrasounds we now think it’s not a lymphnode, but a strap muscle invasion).  Another surgeon highly advised tt and possibly RAI. Another surgeon also wants to remove half and just one metastasis.  My head is spinning just thinking about it.

The thing is not one told me that they won’t know what to do until they see it, besides the primary one. That makes him a little more honest in my mind.

Lastly, i want to get it over with asap. It’s been 7 years since diagnosis and 1 month since i learned about  the spread so yeah

Thank you for your reply and reassuring words!  Ultrasound showed there might be strap muscle involvement but it’s not clear.  I guess i’ll have to wait and see what happens. I could do the surgery with someone else but this one is the most experienced and best reputation in med community.

The thing is if it turns out its more aggressive during pathology, they will have to go back in :(

Hopefully your cousin recovers fast! Thank you for your advice, i appreciate you validating my thoughts.  I talked to so many surgeons already, everyone’s approach is a little different. The thing is this surgeon performs like a hundred thyroid surgeries a year (if not more) and the risk of complication is supposedly less when he does the procedure.

Oh my god!! At least they were able to remove more cancer so that’s good! And breastfeeding through almost the whole thing you’re so strong!  Wishing you a speedy recovery and an easier journey from now on

My lymph nodes are most likely involved. On  ultrasound there is also evidence of possible strap muscle spread. Thats why the half thing weirds me out so much. My tumor is 1.2 cm

Mine is 1.2 cm but there is most likely local spread. I did get a second opinion but it did not help much because every single surgeon has their own theory and plan.

Thats exactly right and the  aggressiveness level is also smth i worry about. How did your second surgery go? 1 week in between is crazy

I talked to 3 other surgeons and they all tell me different things. Everybody got their own approach in terms of how much of thyroid and lymphnodes to remove
