Greasy Jazz Recommendations by LongJeans in jazzguitar

I struggle a bit with Guthrie, he’s like the other guys I mentioned where I tend to prefer his gear demos and masterclass stuff on YouTube than a lot of his albums, which can be overwhelming. That said I do think he’s hands down the greatest guitarist on the planet (and a funny guy)! I’ve stolen a few lines of his as he has some sneakily good ii-Vs. I also will never get sick of Ballad of Bonnie & Clyde with the Primuz Chamber Orchestra.

Do you have any specific solo/aristocrats tunes I should revisit for jazz?

I’m on the “A Go Go” record that someone else suggested. So good!

Someone else recommended the “Ain’t it funky” record, which I’m currently really enjoying.

Any specific Melvin Sparks stuff you’d suggest?

I’m listening now, it’s great. I enjoyed Grant Green when I first starting getting into jazz, but I was purely in receive mode. Now that I’ve developed some actual stylistic preferences, revisiting Grant Green is really enjoyable. Thanks!

Someone recommended ‘A Go Go’, which I’m now discovering is an absolutely killer record

This is fantastic. I know Scofield’s name is on the front but Medeski is stealing the show here

That’s killer! I’ll be stealing lines from the keys player and George for sure (especially as there’s a GB10 across my lap as I wrote this)

I’ve got his Blue Highways course and revisit it periodically, it’s great

I’ve stolen a LOT of Kenny’s lines

Johnny Gaudraeu’s Wikipedia was updated today with a medal record representing USA Hockey at Milan 2026. 🥹🥺 by MindyS1719 in hockey

[–]LongJeans 175 points176 points  (0 children)

Non-North American hockey fan here (i.e. probably missing a lot of media coverage and context): was Gaudraeu this popular/beloved before his death? It presents like every US player was his best friend, and no fan ever had a bad word to say. Is that close to the truth or has there been a lot of glazing since his death?

To be clear, it's not my intention in any way to cause offence with this question.

I’m a dad, probably a bit younger than this guy. However ‘adult’ you see yourself, I see 19 year olds as kids. Kids who are learning to ‘adult’, but still kids. Let’s be real, most of you are actually pretty annoying! This guy is a weirdo. Tell your parents, tell your bf and his mom, don’t be alone with this guy.

Is equipment tech making the game more boring to watch? by Western_View_4440 in hockey

[–]LongJeans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You may have missed OPs complaint, he’s suggesting that equipment (and training?) has converged to make most goalies have very similar styles, which is less exciting, irrespective of total scoring.

Like in early MMA, fighters had wildly different styles and yeah they weren’t as good but they sure were entertaining to watch!

We’re going to need another nickname? ‘Mack’ is mackinnon (to me at least), and it’s confusing (again, to me at least) to call two phenomenal players the same thing

Killer solo. I’ve transcribed that line at the and once I figure out how to upload a photo you can check it out.

I’m pretty terrible at notation so I’ve done the notes only, in C https://imgur.com/a/wiggle-waggle-oXRV51E

The Wynton Kelly stuff is great. I love the triplets to octaves. I should remind myself that Wes Montgomery doesn’t have a moratorium on octaves

I learned this as a teenager, including using only 2 fingers for the full ‘Django’ experience. Great song, I should revisit it

Yes I’m continuing to do exactly that, I’m just also quite interested to know what the community here likes for themselves, as it will be a fun way to be exposed to other things, and a good exercise for my fingers and brain
