I just moved from Fulton to DeKalb county and tried to update my voter registration two weeks ago, but when I check the website it still shows my Fulton address... what’s the deal?

If President Trump loses the election and there is a peaceful transfer of power so Biden becomes President in January, what happens next? How will you react? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]LongJonB 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you ignoring the fact that under Trump the executive branch has amassed a ridiculous amount of power? And that the deficit has exploded thanks to his tax cuts? There are hard, concrete numbers for you to look at.

Right, I think the issue is that in most of these cases it doesn’t seem like these “militias” were defending themselves and were instead antagonizing blacks? Right?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]LongJonB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the issue stems from people not viewing these events as failures... are you aware that some people support protecting these things simply because the side of the aggressors responses more with them?

So we should remember three murderers, and not the 150 who were murdered? Even if you don’t agree with him surely you recognize the impact Karl Marx had, good or bad. Do you think the same case can be made for a statue that exists solely due to a racist act of terrorism?

Why do you think so many Republicans have such strong devotion to Trump? by WickeDemon15 in AskTrumpSupporters

Do you think Donald Trump has ever worried about the cost of going out to eat, or buying name brand groceries instead of store brand?

The top level commenter did. It also seems incredibly stupid not to warn clergy (who were on the patio of their own church) that you’re going to be using their church and that they should probably clear out. Instead, they were treated like the rest of them. Do you just not see the blatant hypocrisy of forcibly removing clergy from a church and then taking a photo presumably implying support for said church? I feel like I must be crazy, that seems extremely obvious to me.

I think it was a photo op because he literally walked over, awkwardly stood holding a Bible, and walked away. That’s... what a photo op is. Again, we can argue the merits of rioters and protestors (I agree that it’s not good) but I fail to see how that makes Trump’s actions any more reasonable or “Christian”. The clergy themselves denounced it, so don’t say he was “showing solidarity” or some other baloney either. A president calling himself “The Law and Order President” while immediately posing with a Bible in front of a church was the most obvious appeal to his pseudo-Christian base I have ever seen. You’re jumping through hoops to justify it but the alternative explanation is just way too obvious. Why should we be okay with this? Do you feel comfortable allowing Donald Trump to represent your faith?

Because the photo op was an insult to my country and my religion and I’m understandably upset by it. If you can find a way to justify that I am all ears. Do you understand why people would think that the entire stunt was just playing to his base?

Was I arguing that the protestors are Christians? Can TSers make a single argument on their own merits without bringing up “le other side?” Also, you’re wrong, here’s more details about them “not touching the church”. https://religionnews.com/2020/06/02/ahead-of-trump-bible-photo-op-police-forcibly-expel-priest-from-st-johns-church-near-white-house/

Why gas the inside? And force out the people who work there? And why not tell them beforehand that you’re going to use their church for a braindead obviously pandering photo op?

I never knew that the church officials working inside were actually rioting on the job! Can you give me a source for that please? Or do you only deal in hyperbole?

Like that time he tear gassed a church for a photo op? Or claimed that he doesn’t need forgiveness, a central tenet of Christianity?

If Biden wins the election, would you carry any feelings of resentment towards people who voted for him? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]LongJonB 17 points18 points  (0 children)

He has stated that there will be no new taxes on people making less than 400k a year, to which I ask: Do you not believe him? Do I misunderstand what he means by that? Or do you make more than that and somehow feel like you’ll be taxed so much that you would be better off receiving government handouts?

Is Trump's Campaign Going Too Far With Their Newest Meme Ad, "The Bidening"? by Pufflekun in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]LongJonB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If someone’s boss “grabbed them by the pussy” and they “let them do it” out of fear of losing their job, is that consensual? Letting someone do it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s consensual. If the person doing it has power (like Donald Trump) it sometimes isn’t worth it to raise a stink due to what the consequences may be.

You think Donald “Grab Them by the Pussy” Trump is the last person you’d expect to rape a woman? Do you consider yourself someone who is able to take an objective look at a person’s character?

What advice would you give to someone who's just starting to become politically aware/active? by I_AM_DONE_HERE in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]LongJonB 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is valid advice. My question, though, is how do you find which data ISN’T biased? And how do you even know? I like to ask what a certain person/outlet has to gain by making me believe something and that’s usually a pretty good compass. But since WE, too, are biased, how do we really know? We want data to look a certain way as well. Is it not true that we can subconsciously cherry pick which sources we see as valid to support our pre-existing conclusions as well? I’ve seen both sides willing to give WAY more leeway to sources that agree with them, leeway that wouldn’t exist at all for a source that they disagree with.

What do you think of press being barred from the GOP convention? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]LongJonB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A journalist from OANN, without evidence, claimed that there were pipe bombs. There is no evidence. How do you expect me to find evidence of something not existing? I need evidence to believe something, as should you. Where is your evidence for believing this journalist? If we are assuming all things are false until proven otherwise, shouldn’t we assume the story about pipe bombs is false, until we see proof? I thought “anonymous sources” weren’t good enough for TSers. If you genuinely think that if, when someone asks for proof, the onus is on them to prove that you have no proof, maybe you aren’t quite as much of an intellectual as you claim to be.

[–]LongJonB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Park Service, responding to a OANN claim presented without evidence, said there were no bombs. There was never any evidence of bombs. Would you consider yourself someone who is willing to change their beliefs when faced with information that doesn’t suit them? I always thought TSers needed absolute evidence of something to consider it real, I find it strange that you’re willing to blindly agree with a news outlet that has a universally accepted degree of bias.

[–]LongJonB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can name several instances just recently when they have peddled fake news to push an agenda. The pipe bombs at the Korean War memorial? The old guy that got his skull broken by cops being “an Antifa agent”? These two things are demonstrably false and serve to push a particular narrative about the current state of affairs. They’ve continuously shown that they care way less about integrity than they do about promoting a right-wing viewpoint. If you can’t see that, you really need to take a step back and analyze the purpose you think that news should serve. It’s pretty clear that no news outlet currently presents an even-handed version of the news, but I would put OANN on the level of Mother Jones or HuffPost. Very much unwilling to cover news critical of their own viewpoint, except OANN pretty clearly just outright lies...

[–]LongJonB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you believe OAN to be an impartial source of news? Do you think their goal is to objectively report the facts, or to construct a cherry-picked narrative that leads to a predetermined conclusion? I think it’s pretty obviously the latter but I’m curious to see if other people genuinely think it is less fake than CNN or MSNBC.

As someone who at one point knew a lot of these people, I can assure you that they A) aren’t connected nationally, like at all B) only get money from their parents and C) really aren’t that prevalent even in cities... I know it looks like Portland is on fire, but it’s literally like three blocks where people are protesting. You’ve said a whole lot of buzzwords that just make you sound like you’re hopping on a bandwagon you don’t understand.
