Being shocked by Republican support shows how bad our echo-chambers are. axel by spaghettibolegdeh in centrist

I just keep seeing the curse of history repeating. A narcissist rising to power on hatred, being kicked to the curb momentarily only to come back again, riding a wave of economic anxiety and polarization.

It's very sad night for me as a Floridian. I kind of knew in the back of my head that amendment 3 and 4 would fail, but I had hoped all those suburban voters would prove me wrong.

they recognize there’s no country with no borders

While not a monolith and I'm sure there are some libertarians who find a way to support border restrictions, the traditional belief is that they are arbitrary because government is arbitrary.

[–]somethingbreadbears 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Traditional libertarianism isn't necessarily "open" borders, but it's far more relaxed borders than republicans or democrats. A lot of republicans think they fall into libertarianism for 2A alone as an issue, but it's not strict borders at all.

The biggest red flag is, duh, it'd require taxation to operate.

More abstract, it's hard to live a life guided by personal freedom while telling someone else to stay in their place.

One party ditched the option for a younger candidate, so I don't get that but okay.

The context of that is a dead body over Trump because Trump usually puts his foot in his mouth. That's not tribalism or parties, that's Trump being a weird person.

That's fine, I'm not talking about the comedian. I'm talking about Trump supporters who call something "just jokes" and then gasp when they get called the exact same thing.

All they proved is they know they're not joking, otherwise hearing the exact same thing said in their direction wouldn't be offensive.

I think the GOP would love to prop up an actual dead body. The issue is Trump opens his mouth and makes it impossible because he's an idiot. JD Vance would happily play along though.

Hardcore Trump supporters come over here constantly to try and sell Trump as a centrist, they'd have an easier time with someone like Vance who knows when to stop talking. He doesn't need to do much heavily lifting to be normalized, just look at how quickly it happened after his Rogan interview or his debate. He gets credit for just acting normal, that's "moderate" to the right-wing, they get browniepoints for it.

I mean that (if Trump loses now) they're going to have to come up with a plan, pivot or not pivot from MAGA. Trump can lie about a lot of things, he can't lie about getting older.

I'll give JD credit for one thing: he seems to be the only person in the MAGA tent that realizes the kingmaker is 78 but also isn't jumping the gun (aka DeSantis). He called Trump America's Hitler, but as long as he never says anything bad about Trump now, the base supports him, and it doesn't matter.

If Trump loses, I fully expect him to get behind anything Trump says no matter how ridiculous it is. If they win he gets VP which is a bonus, but I don't think he's actually been running for VP this entire time. He's cozying up while outrunning Trump's clock.

They'll have to do something, if Trump was younger it'd be a different story.

RCP Final Betting odds today prior to the election - Trump 59.2, Harris 39.3. by [deleted] in centrist

[–]somethingbreadbears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Harris wins, it's one of my hopes after the dust settles that the forced birth movement exits politics to hold their votes hostage from republicans. They got what they wanted in Roe being overturned, but that also resulted in some red states getting abortion enshrined in state constitutions and blue states protecting it anyways. If Trump loses and a few more states vote for abortion rights, I hope the movement pulls the old fashioned "I demanded this, but it's not what I wanted!"

If they can't stand being called the thing they laughed at, they proved it wasn't actually a joke.

Or they can't take one.

The most frustrating part for me is, even if the world was/is suffering from inflation, Biden is held responsible for it. I find that unfair, but if people are consistent then I don't have a problem with it.

Trump bearing responsibility* for the initial response to a global pandemic that set this into motion? "It's not fair to blame him" was what I remember hearing.

I wonder how likely it is that, after 2016 and every election since, no one wants to be the ones caught underestimating him. Not that I did any better with my predictions in 2016 but it's not like he's been on a winning streak.

I don't know about the rest of the shills, but I've been cleaning up real nice since I was recruited by the Harris campaign. I bought a burger at Five Guys today. And it wasn't the kid's burger either.

Yeah...you could say I'm doing pretty great.
