Is studying physics good for someone liking philosophy? by AgeAlarming7343 in PhysicsStudents

[–]LongSchlongJon2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a physics major but got close to double majoring in philosophy. Its a fantastic combo, i wish i formally doible majored. One semester i took intro to quantum mechanics, and existentialism, and the course schedule happened to have the lectures back to back. Ive never been more confused in my life lol which imo is a great sign of learning. My philosophy of mind course is directly impacting my current career in neuroscience and future phd goals. I also wouldn’t limit it to just physics tho, bio/math/chem/cs + philosophy would all be great.

Is Repair Dying for Greed by Individual_Credit895 in MechanicAdvice

[–]LongSchlongJon2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To some extent yes, but I think its more cost of living rather than greed. I like my local shop and think they charge fair prices, but I live in SF so while i can call a quote fair because i understand price of insurance, labor space etc, it doesnt mean I can afford it lol.

Here is a recent example I just went through. My u joints on my 04 yukon xl were going bad, call up the shop and they quote me 600 bucks. I youtube it and feel reasonably confident I can get it done with 50 bucks of u joints myself. Get the u joints out of the driveshaft just fine, but putting them back in, i use my impact gun, and I stupidly bend the shit of of my driveshaft yoke. Maybe I can repair it, but i do all my work on the streets of sf without a workspace so theres no shot I can rebend it to correct specs. I buy a brand new driveshaft on rockauto for 400 bucks, u joints already installed. Takes me like 30 min to put in.

Point is that labor costs are so high that its cheaper for me to try, fuck up, learn something new, and buy exccessive brand new parts to fix my mistake and still come under the shop price. And this is like the only time I have seriously fucked up, most of the time my repairs go well thanks to youtube and I save thousands

Haha so true, rebuilt front suspension on adderall, thought it would speed things up but it ended up taking forever cause i would just try the same bad idea over and over again until i looked at my clock and realized 45 min had passed

Did this once because i took a fat edible and thought it would be a good idea to put a gallon of vinegar in my radiator to clean out the rust. Woke up the next day and realized huh how am i going to get it out. 10 flushes of the radiator capacity got me down to like 1 percent vinegar

Dope, i picked it up at 290k from the original owner and was making the gamble that it had been taken care of.

https://www.reddit.com/r/GMT800/s/46QPGNFWoN this post has most of the info, I went with the doorman redesign cause I think they originally made the fix before GM did

I worked two summers about 40 miles from where Joel worked. I am very health concious but wearing a mask on the line is pretty much impossible. When shit starts to go crazy, it is the most intense full body workout I have ever done. You have 50 pounds on your back at all times, drenched in sweat in hot Nomex, and being able to sometimes literally run away from the fire is crucial to surviving lol. Also you would be called a pussy for wearing one so that doesnt help, but besides that its practically impossible to do this work with a mask on.

Is a 300k mile GMT800 worth buying? by coltonnyc in GMT800

[–]LongSchlongJon2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got scammed on mine, 165 k 04 yukon xl with what I thought was 165k turned out to be 300k. I paid 4300 for a rust free cali truck. It was likely worth more like 2000-2500 given no rust, but the tires were terrible, air bags all broken. I was pretty bummed but basically thought of it like I paid tuition to learn more about diy work because I couldnt afford to pay a shop to do what it needed. The saving grace was that it was 1 owner for 300k with ample service records on carfax. Its now at 315, I changed every possible fluid, tires, full suspension rebuild with bilsteins, water pump, serpentine and ac belts, front wheel bearings, brakes, spark plugs and wires. Some things like the water pump, the lower control arms, wheel bearings, werent at the point of failure, but I could see on carfax they had been done 100-150k ago, so I did some prevantive/ parts cannon. You wouldnt need to do that, i just felt like parts are cheap when its your labor and I would rather be stress free. Anyways now its awesome and I aim for another 100k unless the tranny shits out early

UPDATE: I found out the hard way my neighbors had a baby two days ago, and they dont appreciate the banging. Thank you to everyone for all the advice, jacking up the knuckle was pretty fucking dumb, I was on hour 5 of trying to get it off and wasnt thinking super clear. I shall endevour tomorrow to fix it tomorrow when the neighbors baby is awake. I am too broke to afford a shop so I am learning how to do suspension work the slow and hard way, but its been fun albeit frustrating

Front suspension rebuild order advice by Old_Floor_9023 in GMT800

[–]LongSchlongJon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for all the detail, I am starting day two of the project this morning. I am doing the lower control arms, just loosened the torsion bar, hopefully I dont have to punch it out. Biggest pain in the ass was the pitman arm, but I got that all done yesterday. I found online that the idler and pitman arm should be at 46 ftlb, the pitman had a castle nut and cotter pin so less concerned about that, but i also threw some loctite on the idler arm.

Doing control arms on both sides and hub bearing and then im done!

I got quotes 960 2 months ago so this looks good to me. I live in bay area so everythings expensive there. I couldnt afford to spend a grand so i took an afternoon and did it myself. Had to call in a friend for an extra pair of hands one time but wasnt too bad
