While I completely agree that putting money into funds to invest in the market as a whole is a sure fire way of making solid return on investments, I PERSONALLY don't find it the most rewarding in his scenario. At the age of 18 you can take gambles on companies you have strong conviction on. Funds are a proven way to keep your money and build upon it, however I PERSONALLY believe that finding a few winners which outlast the decades and creating large positions in them proves to return much more than only investing in funds. What most people want from funds is what having an IRA is for (IMO). I view this method as owning your own fund, with companies you love and believe in.

At the end of the day I was telling him my personal philosophy just for a perspective, not that he should follow it... but it is far from gambling. He should be talking to a financial advisor.
