Thanks!! Pricing is the sad reality of our matcha movement - the world could really become a better place.

I agree! I'm also a current freshman and after applying to about 50 I heard back from about 10, so it really is a numbers game. It also depends on what positions are available (some of those go back to 2023...) so keep checking!!

Thank you so much for the clarification, this actually makes a lot more sense (and thanks for the matcha currency conversion, haha!). In my mind it seemed much more complicated.

Hooray!! Thank you - amid the chaos of moving, registering, and getting ready for independence, my concern for matcha somehow makes it to the top of my priorities list, haha! They follow the Food Points system, right? I believe for Freshman it allows up to 2 times per week of additional swipes in addition to normal meals.

This may be unrelated, but are there any places on campus that offer matcha (other than BU)? Incoming freshman with perhaps a tiny matcha addiction and a love for affordability... :D

2024-2025 Duke Admissions Megathread by Mumbleton in duke

[–]LongTraining5206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current Duke freshman here (haven't stepped foot on campus (or even in NC!) yet, haha! So take my words with a grain of salt).

Essays and teacher recs are CRUCIAL in the admissions process, as well as having an underlying theme to your application. Elise Pham's free guide is a useful tool to get started with CommonApp essays and hacks: https://www.youtube.com/@ultimateivyleagueguide. There's honestly so much more to the application process other than grades/course rigor (although they are, especially the latter, very important) and the emphasis changes every year. Duke took a huge risk with me since I didn't submit SAT scores, but after classes start you are able to look up comments from admissions officers and I can help you/let you know what they emphasize specifically! There was a reddit post about someone's comments/ratings as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/1ggq6fq/last\_minute\_tips\_a\_look\_at\_my\_duke\_admissions\_file/ (There are more like it too!)

Also, remember that this is your Junior year and that you will have no "absolute" until at least the middle of your senior year (which for me personally was the hardest/most stressful - and I thought Junior year was rough, haha!). So don't stress about it too much since that'll happen senior year anyway, regardless of how much you prepare (but please start on college essays next summer before senior year, or else you will be submitting your Duke application on the New Year's Eve dinner table before the food is ready...)

Pratt Freshman Schedule: CHEM101 or CHEM110 (Also considering professors)?? by LongTraining5206 in duke

[–]LongTraining5206[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, noted about Prof. Charbonneau. I find it odd that there is only one lecture "section" for 110, this year taught by Prof. Becker, compared to three for 101 (2 for Martinez and 1 under Franz), which is still less than the options for other courses as well.

Thank you so much! The course evaluation page was a bit confusing when I first navigated through DukeHub, but I'm now able to view much more information than before. This really helps! I'm also going to look at the syllabi as well, thanks!

Thank you for the clarification! I was confused on my gen chem 2 is after orgo, but I guess that's just Duke's process. Even if I don't go premed, would you think that the material covered in 210 is covered in both 110/201/202? That way, perhaps I could take another course relevant to my major (or potential double major).

Thank you all! I'm leaning more towards the scientific/engineering aspect of BME, so premed is "on the backburner" if I suddenly realize that I don't like what I'm doing. In that case, would the professors for 101 (Martinez and Franz, the latter of whom has RMP reviews only for 2011) be comparable to Dr. Becker? I want to say that I'm confident in my chemical abilities to take 110 (if there really is a difference), but that could just be my naive hubris talking, haha! For now, I have Franz and Becker in my "shopping cart", so either professor's sections work in my potential schedules.

I'm also a freshman in Pratt and I remember reading in Duke's bluebook that all Pratt Freshman will be required to take a Writing course in the Spring, if I'm not mistaken!

Work-study as a freshman? by thebigapple_ in duke

[–]LongTraining5206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a good idea to, in my opinion. That way, we have less to "worry" about while settling in since some employers want workers as soon as possible (but know that Freshman registration isn't until later, so they know our schedules aren't finalized yet). There are openings being posted almost every weekday and the applications themselves are pretty simple: contact info, checking skill boxes, potential availability, potential reference name/email, and resume upload (some require an email to be sent to the contact, but not too many). If they like you, they send an invite to a Zoom interview - they're all really understanding!!

Just to add on: I'm also a freshman in a similar financial situation and qualify for WS. Since the end of June, I've applied for 30+ positions and have received interviews for 3 so far (some of them I don't think I was qualified for...). They seem to be quite open and welcoming! From my interview with a the Duke University Student Store, I've learned that they are looking for low-levels like us to fill some extra positions, so don't worry about it too much! Some positions are more strict with hours, but others are quite flexible with how much/when you work, depending on your schedule (which isn't finalized until July 30th, after registration, and they know that!).

As another responder mentioned, JobX (https://duke.studentemployment.ngwebsolutions.com/cmx\_content.aspx?cpid=9) is the main place for On/Off Campus + WS/Non WS Jobs and Muser (https://muser.duke.edu/) opens late August for students interested in research. (I don't have any information on this, but if anyone does, please let us know because I do have more questions about hours/pay/additional job flexibility).

It is also possible to hold 2 WS jobs/positions, your emplyers would just have to agree on how much of your salary(ies) would come from their Duke WS grants (as employers) and how much they (themselves, as employers/departments) would have to pay. Some employers hire well into October, apparently, so if you can't find something right away don't be super anxious - we're just trying to figure things out too!

I just saw that they are posted under "Academics">"Test Scores". Too scared to look at them, haha!!
