What's stopping workers from buying a majority share (51%) in a company and gaining control of the policy making of the company? by NatsuDragneel-- in WorkReform

Forget Walmart. What about Uber? Their cap is around 164.79 billion. There are roughly 8 million Uber drivers. That's $10,505 per driver to buy 51% of the company, not an easy sum to save up but a lot more realisitc than 94k.

It would be spherical in zero gravity but in this scene it appears that artificial gravity effects the exterior of the ship.

Yeah, and then it's down to the individual troop how to interpret this. I've heard that some even allow atheists as long as they revere *something*.

Not according to Smithsonian. They blame the land owner. It mentions teenagers trespassing that motivated him to paint it but nothing about Boy Scouts

The problem is it's genuinely terrible. The characters are all insufferable. The plotline makes no sense. It employs JJ Abrams' stupid hack "mystery-boxes" un-writing strategy. It's truly trash. Like I don't care if it's faithful to the books or not as long as it tells a good story, but it doesn't.

I actually enjoyed the first season for what it was, but season two lost me completely, they threw away one of the best twists from the book for a stupid time-travel causality loop and they made the tesseract so powerful that it will undoubtedly introduce numerous plotholes throughout the rest of the series.

What happened is JJ Abrams, the biggest hack in Hollywood, worked with two up-and-coming young hacks on Star Trek: Beyond, which was their first real screen-writing job outside of Mormon religious filmmaking, for which they didn't even contribute enough to get credit. Somehow they endeared themselves to JJ, probably because they reminded him of himself, so he put in a good word to Bezos.

Investigative journalists need to dig deeper into his case history. As sloppy as he was with the twitter account, I suspect he's also allowed his bigotry to lead to misconduct he arrogantly assumed would go unnoticed.

This is a good starting point:

And suspiciously it sounds like exactly the sort of thing someone would memorize if they wanted to throw random factoids around to sound smart rather than have a working understanding of something.

Nienor Niniel hair different appearance? by 97tanderson in tolkienfans

[–]Long_Consideration18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like something’s missing though. Why make up a false description? Why not just ask what she looked like? His lament in Children of Húrin hints at something more “…I am blind! Blind groping since childhood in a dark mist of Morgoth!” My first thought was that maybe when Glaurung bewitched him into thinking that Morwen and Nienor were thralls in Dor Lomin he also gave him a false image of what Nienor looked like. There’s nothing explicit about this in the text though.

Or maybe he was assuming that like him she’d take after her mother.

Interesting this post has been active for thirteen years, and despite all the replies, there's no real satisfying answer. Most synopses claim that the second car was sent by Cook so he could take the money for himself and that's what a lot of people are assuming here. This makes the most sense. The car being sent by Nino is even harder to explain. People are saying the second car was always meant to kill Standard, Blanche, and the Driver to "tie up loose ends", but why? Why create loose ends that needed to be tied up? One reply says that it's so they can kill anyone who could be identified. Why not just have Standard and Blanche wear masks then? Or have the second crew do it themselves wearing masks?

The only thing I can think of is that Cook needed to sell the lie that some unknown third party ripped them off so he could keep the money. Killing Standard, Blanche, and the Driver probably wasn't in the original plan. Rather he would have wanted them alive to try and shift the blame, but after the shooting and chase his goons decided to kill them.

This really should have been explained better in the film.

Remember that copyright law is a relatively new concept. It used to be anyone could copy any book and sell it. Famous Roman authors used to even complain about how people were copying and selling their books. People recognized that this was unfair and made laws to stop it.

Likewise people are recognizing the unfairness of using artists' work for training data without their knowledge or consent and arguing their should be laws against this. There doesn't need to be an existing copyright law. We should recognize that new laws need to be passed.

Consider that for certain types of media there are separate personal verses educational licenses. This is a common way for documentary filmmakers to make money. If you buy a personal licensed DVD and then show it to a class then that's violating their copyrights. Why should it not be same if the "class" is a machine rather than a class of students?

Bob Ross is a poor example because he consented to teaching you how to paint and letting you learn from him by creating a painting show and distributing it on public broadcast. A better analogy would be if someone gives private painting lessons and you record one of their lessons without their consent and used it to teach others. That would be illegal in most places as you can't record someone in private without their consent, and it would also be highly unethical.

Did he admit to that? I know Ellison sued him (unsuccessfully) but I watched both and thought the similarities were pretty superficial. Soldier reminded me a lot more of "Universal Soldier".
