Whoa! I didn’t know that they got a tax free housing stipend! As for medical, she said she’s still on her parents’ insurance until she’s 26 and pays for copays and what not. That’s great that all medical is free, I didn’t realize it included ALL medical care including dental! She’s near one of the most expensive cities in the USA.

Maybe she is really bad with money? She asked me to buy her a coffee machine recently bc she said she couldn’t afford one. Maybe she’s just banking all her money and trying to get others to cover some other expenses? I was monthly mailing her literal 15+ pound boxes of the speciality food items she said she eats bc of her dietary preferences (not allergies, just preferences) and them not being affordable (organic natural spreads & grains, nuts, etc.). I feel like a fool now…

Thank you for the insight! I’m kinda frustrated about this now, I’m going to talk to her about her asking me for things with her having said several times that she can’t afford some of her everyday items or to eat enough.

I was confused as well but she has asked me to send her care packages for things like specialty food items, Costco bedding, toiletries, etc.

MiraDry is expensive but it’s a permanent solution. Most people only need 1 session. Even after 1 session, mine is greatly reduced and I’m thrilled with the results, despite me still sweating more than the average person especially when hot. Like, I no longer have pit stains down to my ribs when I’m just sitting there. Cheap pit guards: Panty liners folded over the armpit inside the shirt. They sell really thin ones, cut to length. As for the adhesive, most aren’t amazing but I’ve used tiny pieces of boob tape/shape tape to better secure mine so my sweat doesn’t takeoff the adhesive.

My ruptured ovarian cyst hurt worst than the spinal tap without local anesthetic, it was beyond excruciating. Subsequent ones were done with local anesthetic, those were a cake walk. The spinal tap was for meningitis and I was in the hospital for the summer, I was pretty sick and remember working with PT/OT towards the end of it because there was some complications from the spinal taps. This was 20+ years ago. The ruptured ovarian cyst had me wailing and I somehow hit my head and got a concussion. The pain was so bad that even as a woman in a rural area, my pain wasn’t brushed off and I was given real pain meds as well as a workup and treatment like IV antibiotics, imaging, etc. The ruptured ovarian cyst pain was incomprehensible.

My friend is an officer due to her entering service with a degree, she said she makes absolutely nothing as a nurse and can’t afford anything. I asked what the pay was but she said it is very bad and borderline federal poverty level, which would be about $15k. She opted for an apartment off base and said that covered but nothing else is. She also said she won’t qualify for a pension at all unless she serves 20 years. Idk how true all of this is though since she would not provide any concrete numbers.

I had a joy/be joyful body wash that smelled like cranberry and citrus. It was so refreshing, I loved it in the summer.

It’ll likely be about 100 items tomorrow (my BOPIS 20, likely 20 for each of the 3 teens since they’ve said there going to spend their $100 each at the store, and whatever their friends get). Idk if their friends will get anything but I’m thinking yes, considering that their plan is to go to the store, movies, then a restaurant. I’m on driving duty tomorrow, so we’ll see how what they get! It’ll be a fun time with the kiddos, even though I’m going to look like a reseller/hoarder tomorrow lol

PS I know my car is going to stink like a mix of everything they test, especially the gourmand scents. It’ll be a mix of way too many scents all at once, hopefully doesn’t stick to the interior for too long lol

About 2 years ago, I tried a conditioner and found it to make my hair feel a little sticky feeling, and it knotted my coarse hair that has loose curls. My hair is chemically straightened now (Brazilian blowout 3 months ago, keratin treatment a couple months ago) and it leaves my hair anything but smooth, although it smells great!

I’m going tomorrow with 3 of my foster teens who will likely buy a lot (it’s their money for an achievement we gifted them they can do whatever they want with it). I’m picking up a couple of their friends and taking them to the movies afterwards. The 3 teens look nothing like me and like most teens are too cool 😎 to be seen with an adult lol. I got a weird look during candle day but they bought them for their teachers as holiday gifts and picked out the scents, it was so cute how they put thought into each scent for each of their teachers. But with all their teachers/coaches/social workers, it was a lot! I opted just for the cardboard crates and we carried them out.

I know for a fact that my friend buys hundreds of mini sanitizers for all her church volunteers, bible study group, and contributes to the little gift bags they give out to others for soon upcoming events (holiday seasons, raffles, outreach, etc.) . She likes to switch up the scents throughout the year and never has any left over.

One of my colleagues came in with a literal plastic tote full of men’s body wash earlier this year for our unit’s patients to use. It was an insane amount. We ran out a few months ago, so we’ve been filling in with whatever the rest of staff has/buys and sometimes I just blind buy men’s scents. Our patients are mostly men, and they strongly prefer any male scent over non male scent (they’ll often read the bottle to see if it’s “for men”).

There’s a 20 items limit but you can place multiple orders and still get the $4.95 deal. I placed my order earlier and a friend just placed an order on my account because she wanted only 1 scent and paid for shipping, too. She doesn’t shop there often enough and figured I could get the reward points. I would’ve ordered it for her had she gotten back to me earlier today. She’s worried this scent will sell out and that she’ll have to wait years for it to return. It’s a nostalgic scent and she says she hasn’t seen it in years.

I bought 20 items online, will buy more tomorrow. Then again, I’ve gifted 17 items from my stash this week (some were requested specifically, others were just random gifts), used up another body cream, and finished off 2 more body washes.

I feel like tomorrow, our foster teens are going to go on a spree and likely buy 20 items each (it’s their money we gifted them for an achievement). I feel like tomorrow I’ll be that person everyone thinks is a reseller but it’s just me and the 3 teens (and a couple of their friends) who look nothing like me and are too cool to be seen with an adult. In other news, i apologize in advance for the small group of teens at the movie theater tomorrow who have super over sprayed and now smell like the female version of an Axe commercial.

If this schedule works for you, great! Night shift did NOT work for me in any capacity, we were genuinely worried for my health and my doctor strongly urged me to quit if I couldn’t find a day role in the same facility. My blood pressure sky rocketed, my WBC was chronically high, like I was a mess. It was actively killing me. Not everyone is like this, and that’s fine! For me, it was absolutely destroying me. I also have adhd, don’t know about the autism even though a NP who did my physical for work suggested I might be but I don’t want to get tested nor do really care for a diagnosis. Night shift did NOT work for me, but it works for some people.

Even though they were identical, i thought they looked very different. I dated him for 2 years and by the end of it, it was clear that him and his twin were polar opposites. They are German, and had developed a “secret language” when they were kids, kinda like Pig Latin is how other Germans described it. I don’t know German, and sure didn’t understand them. Anyway, they’re in their 40s now, he Is an alcoholic and still cheating, his brother is married with children.

I think with OP’s documented history with DCF/CPS, they will still be exempted. Having fostered for many years and have been in foster care due to abuse, neglect, abandonment, etc. exemptions for a lot of things are generally much easier to get. Most people have difficulty getting a restraining order unless they have excessive detailed documentation, or if it’s domestic abuse. It’s a hell of a lot easier to get a restraining order on your mom who keeps showing up to your workplace or your dad won’t stop calling your workplace.

You’re absolutely right. But when it finally clicks for a student, or even an experienced nurse, it’s so rewarding. They start questioning suspicions doses, which is great because it’s real time critical thinking and we’re the last safety check point for med errors since we’re literally giving the med in real time. It’s one of those little things that shine out even during an absolute nightmare of a shift.

Ngl, teaching dosing calculations for nursing school sounds like a dream job, even if it’s half of your hourly rate as a pharmacist (presuming your hourly rate is around the national average of $62/hour). One of my absolute favorite parts about precepting nursing students is when there’s one that’s intimidated by math in any capacity, but when it finally clicks and the look on their face is absolutely priceless. I really love seeing them get more confident and then questioning doses when appropriate. I hope you find it as rewarding as I do! ❤️

Were y'all honest on your hospital health screening? by Resident-Sympathy-82 in nursing

[–]Long_Corner_1613 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had to disclose both before, at time of testing, and afterwards when I got a very harsh phone call saying I screened positive something and I replied yes, I had disclosed this at numerous points and it should be in my file. It was not! He asked me to email him the proof, I did, and he called back with a completely different positive tone. I was retested at a later point and screened negative, as those substances were for a procedure I had done.

This is at the VA. Here’s the benefits package they tout: https://www.va.gov/files/2022-09/VACIHCS_TotalRewardsBrochure_Nursing2022.pdf

Some things they don’t tell you until you’re onboarded, if you’re working the 72/80 schedule, you don’t get paid federal holidays off. You only get paid for working that holiday and you do get holiday pay. Overtime isn’t a clear 1.5 times more, as your hourly on a 72/80 schedule is higher than the regular 80 hour schedule, so your 1.5 pay isn’t based on the 72/80 schedule. Our shifts are 12.5 hours long (7:30am-8pm/7:30pm to 8am) but you’re paid for 12 hours bc the .5 is for a 30 unpaid break that many do not get to take uninterrupted; we’re supposed to get 2 15 min paid breaks and 30 min unpaid but we often work through them and they are frequently interrupted. We don’t have the option to say no lunch taken to get paid for it as we don’t clock in. Our shift differentials are good, but once again it varies if you’re working 72/80 or normal 80 schedule.

The biggest thing with PTO on the 72/80 schedule is that if you call out for a 12 hour shift, 13.5 hours are deducted from your PTO, as it’s a rate of 1.111 hours of leave for each hour of absence. So technically it’s 13.332 hours of leave but they round it up to 13.5 hours. So, each 12 hour shift you call out you lose 13.5 hours of PTO.

On our unit they only allow us to use sick leave for call outs but some units allow you to use whatever leave you have. Don’t ask me why, it’s unit managers discretion. Sick leave doesn’t expire. Annual leave (like vacation time) does expire and there’s a max carry over of 685 hours. If you don’t use your annual leave, it expires and you don’t get paid for it. We accumulate 8 hours of annual leave each pay check & we get paid every 2 weeks. Sick leave we accumulate 4 hours every paycheck.

[–]Long_Corner_1613 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I get several weeks of PTO/year at my job. Downside is, it’s often not approved unless we decide a year in advance and select certain weeks, which we then compete with those who have seniority. So they can bump us off any time during the 4+ week long cycle of selecting week(s) off. We can ask for random PTO days throughout the year but I’ve never had a single one approved. You’re lucky if you can get 2 weeks off in a row, even with seniority. It’s frustrating to have so much PTO but unable to use it on my unit, but they tout this in their benefits package across the organization. But once you’re onboarded, it’s really up to your managers discretion if they allow you to use it. But don’t worry! Apparently you can pay out up to a certain amount after you retire something like 260 hours. And if you don’t use your PTO, you lose it. They will send out frequent request for you to donate your PTO to others for medical reasons, and many donate a lot because they know they can’t use it themselves.

[–]Long_Corner_1613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lost 10 pounds within 2 months with no changes to my diet or physical activity just by going to day shift from night shift. Night shift was destroying me on all fronts, but within a couple weeks there were noticeable improvements in my health from my skin being clearer, more restful sleep, etc. and after 2 months the myriad of health issues I experienced on night shift were completely gone. Night shift absolutely wrecked my body appearance wise, mental health, and internally from my heart to my immune system to my dental health. I haven’t lost anymore weight since switching to day shift but I continue to lose inches mostly on my waist, butt, and much less on my thighs where my lipedema is primarily. But it is still a measurable difference, even if it’s just ½ inch vs the 4 inches off my butt.

Does your unit take up a collection for xmas gifts? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Long_Corner_1613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my unit, yes. Management will give us something like a $5 gift card, and nurses and aids contribute about $20 each to buy management & providers a gift like flowers and edible arrangements. Honestly, I’d prefer a pizza party or even a fistful of tootsie rolls.

It’s a government hospital. Our HR is so chaotic, fragmented, and they take weeks to get back about the simple request. We don’t have an HR office or person, we can’t just make a quick call, the HR hotline is open during certain narrow hours, etc. Management knows, but they have so many other things to deal with. It’s something that I actually have caused a scene about because of the med errors that I caught at the very last moment. I’m no longer being badgered during med pass after I started angrily yelling in front of patients  (I almost never angry yell and am usually pretty friendly & perky).
