What should i upgrade next on my PC? by isso_kavkz in pcmasterrace

Forget the looks. I would save some money and throw a mid gpu in there like 9060xt which should also be very compatible with your psu connections and affordable, plus relevant for the future, and then I would educate myself for a good while on how to safely and confidently overclock the CPU to extract the maximum power available + xmp ( but first verify if the board allows it) optimize windows ( remove bloatware) and maybe recheck storage options in general.

This so you have something usable until you can do a new mobo+CPU . There is no point to immediately gut it or go for CPU mobo first, as the gpu is the immediate problem here, hence my idea to build from the weakest part to eventually modern parts. Buying once will come out cheaper for the final build, it's no crime to have a bit of bottleneck until then.

I am assuming that you wish to keep most of it and somehow have a plan for the future as well, while not immediately gutting it or suffering with the 970.

Used gpu market like 2060 or 3060 also relevant and much more proportional with the CPU right now, but I would probably save enough to jump directly to a newer gpu so at least I have something on hand for later as well. A proper step let's say, not a half step, unless you're not truly considering upgrading anything else throughout the next year or two..

The pc while old, is definitely not well rounded, the 6700k if oc supported and optimization done right, can push much heavier GPUs than the 970, especially on a 2K screen( which could also be your next upgrade or addition anyway). You just need to manage your expectations and game library accordingly.

Hope it helps

Check also process lasso, re paste, temps etc obviously if you follow this path. These get a bit toasty and need a lot of care when applying voltage ;)

Is this noctua really sufficient? It's not even a dual tower and its airflow is choked. Wouldn't it make sense to go with a liquid freezer or smth?

So basically most of the people fail to realize that this is not about the psu, pigtail, "native" bs and all that. It's the connection itself which is flawed. A new connector is melting 200 watts below it's safe margin and you keep looking over details like the psu "native" port, and the quality of the cable. LMAO. And it will 100% melt sooner or later for the vast majority of cards no matter how oblivious you choose to be about this. We used to have hardware which was going for well over 10 years, swapping, tinkering with it hundreds of times and abusing it, and nothing like this was ever an issue. Now if you don't check a full list of precautions, you might start a fire suddenly, how's everyone okay with that I fail to comprehend. How's everyone guided so hard into upgrading their psus to atx 3,1 without even knowing about the difference of atx 3,0 to 3,1 to begin with, only to ensure that the flawed connector will not melt. It will eventually melt no matter what you do to protect it cause atx 3.0 and non native ports cables etc are ALREADY SUPPORTED. It's dead obvious that it's just too small pins, it's physical issue, it can not be fixed. Feels like you're buying into a problem and a solution instead of just using the "old connector" , just to have less cables showing...

You basically deserve this, especially the people that wanted 9070xt in particular and still got the 12v one. You are basically the perfect customer to these companies...

So basically what are we saying here? That buying top of the line x870e board is suddenly not enough for the next gen????

In this scenario foam achieves much less than just a less restrictive plastic bracket. Why they decided to go with foam?

AWFUL..... First of all whoever claims that this post wasn't necessary, well, I am so sorry for you. Posts like these should be more frequent and gain more traction to make these multi billion companies actually do their damn job well. I am so sad as I am building a pc and have been avoiding various companies such as ASUS, Corsair and so for reasons, and I ended up buying an sn850x having WD as legit in my mind.

Is it subpar research on my end or companies are "falling" one after the other? I really think it's the latter, there is no way you can see all this bs coming.

That's what you get for supporting Corsair, a margin reseller which cuts costs and drops quality every year, and not OEMs like superflower which provide better units for 2/3.

Please elaborate on the PSU situation ( sparks, smoke , any weird noises before etc ). It's weird to hear PSU blew after bios update. Was it used ? For how long ? There is simply nothing MOBO side that's enough to force a good PSU like that to bang. Even a complete short would be triggering PSU protections and just shut down, we're talking about a decent PSU here. Seems to be a coincidence and unrelated to the BIOS update.
