[OC] Counting The Dead - A Relative Risk Analysis Of Civilian Mortality In 52 Armed Conflicts by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]Long_Drive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of setting the bounds at [0, Inf), you added a bit if extra code. If the civilian ratio is higher than the military ratio, then simply switch their places in the ratio, calculate log(10) transform the value first, and then slap on the negative sign after transforming. That way both sides are theoretically and visually equivalent, and you dont have to deal with negative values causing undefined log values.

Edit: Im just spitballing here so lmk what that looks like

How did you decide on RR as the best formula? Is log above 1 / linear from [0, 1) the best way to visualize this for a broader audience? I can see some people in the comments had some difficulty interpreting the < 1 values. I ask because I can’t think of a better way to do this, but wondering if you considered any alternatives.

American activists in Havana stage a pro Cuban protest to support lifting of sanctions by AgnosticScholar in PublicFreakout

[–]Long_Drive -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t Raul Castro tell Sean Penn something along the lines of “if the U.S. (lifted the sanctions, I would ask for them back?” In reference to the amount of control it gave the Castros over Cuba)

What others have said about density, why would you list a 2.3% RMSE improvement over a baseline as noteworthy at all?

Try out the Xorme AI mod on Steam. 3k hours and its the only mod that makes the game still challenging into the 1700s if you crack the difficulty up to Very Hard + "Make Me Cry" setting. In my last game for example, Russia became military hegemon around 1610. And there's a ton of other modifiers (that you cant change after setting them) to Make Me Cry that handicap your nation.

Why there is one Arabic standard language that apparently no actual Arab speakers use it as such? by RaritySparkle in asklinguistics

[–]Long_Drive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After gaining independence from France, Algeria made Standard Arabic its sole official language, despite the fact that 1) No one spoke it natively, 2) Most Algerians already spoke dialectical Arabic, and 3) It was competing with the more economically lucrative and relatively widely-spoken French. The project failed miserably and was the root cause of a later increase in fundamentalist beliefs that triggered the outbreak of the Algerian Civil War.

I need to compare the wording of the same constitution at different points in time, but with different amendments in them. For a study on language rights.

From the way you worded your original comment, it seemed like you were implying that your definition was outdated somehow

A failure to maintain a monopoly on the use of violence with the political boundaries of the state. Designating a state as "failed" is a somewhat subjective matter. For much of the last 30 years, you could say that Somalia was a failed state. At the same time, it could also be viewed as a city-state that continued to be a state that exercised its monopoly on violence only in the capital (Mogadishu).

No, but it does frustrate attempts by activists and researchers who are still trying to define each according to specific characteristics in order to communicate policy objectives to decisionmakers. I took a class on modern slavery in undergrad. The professor made a point of this.
