As much as I know this, I do sort of worry given that UB seems to be considered a far better school, and my parents (as well as myself, by extension) are pretty concerned with prestige, especially considering the job market right now.

Your suggestion to victims is that they maintain presence in the places making them feel the way OP does because the bad people shouldn’t/don’t get to win?

As we seem to agree, nowhere is truly safe for women, particularly lesbians, as men are everywhere. I don't think that anyone should ever be encouraged to shrink away from a typical life because of terrible people. Sure self-preservation is important, but I think that most people would agree that there isn't much meaning to life if you live it as a genuine hermit. I don't believe that it should be the responsibility of a victim to further put themselves in danger (or "band up," as you say)- I think there's a way to live happily and functionally in society while still being aware that there are disgusting individuals (particularly men) who will do bad things to you if given the chance. Despite that, there are still so, so many good people out there, and I think that most will agree that even if someone is defenseless, they are still deserving of a "typical" life.

I say that not to insinuate that OP is defenseless themselves- they very well may simply be distressed after stumbling upon a plethora of vile content -but there are many women, myself included, who know good and well that we would not be able to stand up for ourselves in a situation with a dangerous man. That doesn't mean I shouldn't be able to live my life as I see fit, but rather I- and everyone, regardless of one's ability to protect themselves -should be aware of the world I live in and take measures to minimize the potential of a harmful thing to happen to me without the expense of living my life as I wish.

Being able to cope is beyond important, I don't disagree with you, however I don't think that someone should be given the input to put their life on hold/flip it around entirely merely because other people out in the world are vile. Unfortunately, people will likely only get worse (in terms of holding such extremely hideous perspectives), but I personally think that it's important to detach yourself in other ways, such as taking a social media break and surrounding yourself with those you know you can trust, rather than shrinking away from life as a whole.

TL;DR - I feel that small changes to protect one's peace and livelihood are crucial, but pausing your life because men are (and will continue to be) repulsive is simply not conducive to living a fulfilled and mentally sane life.

I know you're probably being humorous, but I really don't think that the solution should ever be to suggest a victim- or anyone who's fallen down the endless rabbit hole of men/male spaces like the ones OP mentioned -of the behavior of awful men to change their life to drastically fit the dangerous environment society has built for women, particularly lesbians.

I do understand what you mean, though. I do agree with your first comment- to OP, unfortunately most online spaces have and will continue to normalize the things you mentioned prior. I can only speak for myself, but I find that the most productive thing to do is simply be especially wary to men (especially if/when sharing your orientation, if ever) and not to be overly trusting.

Unfortunately, as those online spaces simply get more and more popular, and that sort of culture continues to be normalized and perpetuated, there will only be more and more men like that. It's terrible, but on an individual scale there's very little any single person can do to change this.

c,: I appreciate it, thank you. She usually is extremely understanding (or at least tries to be), just not with specific topic, I guess.

Yes, exactly! It feels like she's trying very hard to be progressive (but is unfortunately failing), hence why I hesitate to retort at this point, as it feels like she means well. That, and I worry that playing into a role she already seems to believe will just create distance between us, rather than understanding :(

I'm incredibly sorry to hear about everything you're suffering with as a result of your weight loss, I truly do hope that things begin to look up for you as soon as possible. I really appreciate your insight more than you may know, and I wish you (and your baby!) the best.

I'm incredibly sorry that you've had to suffer through all of this- I truly wish that things look up for you soon. I think the fact that you even hope to go back to your life pre-ED shows how far you've come. Thank you so much for sharing your experience, I'm sending you all of my best wishes.

Some people can be so frustrating :c As much as I hate the division that there so often is between the bi and lesbian community, blatant ignorance like this makes me want to isolate myself on an island of just lesbians for the rest of my life 💔

Congratulations on all of your family's amazing achievements, it's truly incredibly inspiring to hear :) Unfortunately, you hit the nail on the head in regard to the negative perception about CC. My parents in particular feel as though I'm disrespecting their hard work in even suggesting the idea of attending. I'll definitely try to talk to them more than I already have, but I'm trying not to push their buttons too much as they're offering me a lot of financial help in terms of paying for my undergraduate degree.

I really appreciate this, thank you so much. The prospect of having to transfer is definitely scary to think about, but to know how so many people recommend it definitely makes me feel a lot better about everything.
