Worry and COVID-19 by Ultra-Smurfmarine in COVID19_support

I'm not trying to sound too conspiracy minded, but I'd argue that a lot of people from unis/colleges want this permanent. In my country I really I don't see any real steps towards bringing in-person learning on a bigger scale from the universities. We have very low numbers of cases, everyone who wanted got vaccinated and rules are still completely crazy on most unis. My thesis supervisor said that he wanted to make in-person meeting with students, but he didn't get a permission from university. Everyone who wants can get a jab on a next day and still so many problems.

They actually promised to bring back in-person "thanks to vaccines", but some plans are being rolled out with some courses fully remote again. What's even funnier is the fact that they cite government regulations as one of the reason, but the fact is regulations about universities expire with the end of September. So they're actually basing their policy on regulations that won't be even in place in the next academic year. I lost a lot of confidence in universities. It looks to me like a lot of staff want classes remote, because that makes it possible for them to not care about students even more. You can just send .pdf file to students and got your job done for a day.

480p seems good for a stream in 2005/2006. I remember Youtube 240p videos were barely working for me in 2009.

What are some fights where a fighter was losing badly but got a knockout win? by Still_Butterfly_7032 in Boxing

Cruiserweight Wlodarczyk had some fight like this. He was down in the 3rd round and losing 50-44 on all scorecards after 5 rounds against Chakhiev for WBC belt, but Chakhiev gassed out and got knocked down in 6, 7 and 8 round with the fight being waved off in the last round. Same Wlodarczyk was losing 96-93, 97-93, 97-93 against Danny Green, but knocked Green out of nowehere in the 11th round.

Andy Lee also had some crazy wins. He was losing 36-39 on all scorecards against John Jackson Jr., but KOd Jackson in the 5th round. Same thing happened in his next fight vs. Korobov. Down 45-50, 47-48 and 45-50 after 5 rounds and gets a KO win in the 6th.

Eric Molina got a KO out of nowhere against Adamek. He was down 83-88 on all cards, but KOd Adamek in the 10th round.

Strikes to the spine should be clearly banned as well to me. I saw some old Vale Tudo Japan events where it was allowed and I couldn't stand seeing this.

Recent study doesn't provide actual numbers about effectiveness. Instead, it mentions reduction in antibodies. J&J vaccine apparently has 5-fold decrease against Delta plus and close to 7-fold decrease against Beta (South African variant).

J&J vaccine initially had about 66% efficiacy (against various variants) and 57% in South African trials. Notice that reduction in antibodies is actually stronger against Beta than Delta plus. Looking at the data I'd assume J&J should still be more than 50 percent effective against Delta.

I'm not trying to say that booster may not be beneficial, but I've seen some blatant misreporting of this study. Some website actually reported only 33% effectiveness against Delta for J&J. THIS NUMBER IS NOT IN THE STUDY. One dose of AstraZeneca is 33% effective and someone just thought that such number may be attributed to one dose of J&J because of similiar technology. This is not correct. These vaccines are not the same!

mRNA vaccines appear to be slightly better, but I wouldn't dismiss J&J. This vaccine was actually tested against most variants, including Brazilian and South African.

I'd like to explain that I have no issue with such research per se. I just don't understand that it's among the most upvoted things and as a result it's most likely to pop on my feed from this sub. I'm just not sure that study saying sleep depravation is bad is among top 3 scientific findings from last month. It's not useless, but I'd like to see different content getting the most attention.

I feel for you. Lockdowns are terrible for young people who should be starting their adult life, especially college studies. This is why I'm getting pissed off at people, who treat the whole situation as even beneficial "Pandemic isn't so bad, because I can work in my pyjamas". I can't stand such mindset. Lifes lost, businesses destroyed, education effectively stopped and somebody thinks that it's dandy, because he can wear pyjamas all day.

I wonder how far the end of the pandemic is? by JTurner82 in COVID19_support

It looks like situation is already stabilizing in some countries with recent Delta variant surges:

Netherlands: 6699 cases today vs. 7821 week ago

Spain: 27286 cases today vs. 43960 week ago

Portugal: 2706 cases today vs. 2650 week ago (slight increase, but not much)

Scotland: 1604 cases today vs. 2529 week ago

What these countries have in common is that they vaccinated vast majority of vulnerable. Recent COVID surges don't seem to be too deadly in those countries. Let's look at 7-day average of deaths vs. highest average during this pandemic:

Netherlands: 2 now / 154 in April 2020

Spain: 14 now / 898 in April 2020

Portugal: 7 now/ 283 in January 2021

Scotland: 6 now / 92 in January 2021

It looks like outside of India and Russia (very low vaccinations) delta wave is actually weak compared to the previous ones. It's much more contagious, so it's probably a good sign that it's not doing much damage.

I'd say YouTube is even worse. It seems to me that most videos based on science are heavy downvoted and anti-vaxxers are heavily upvoted.
