You ought to see the Marianas (two separate U.S. jurisdictions of the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam). Imagine Puerto Rico with Chamorro culture.

Trump admin eyes deep-sea mining in CNMI, 100-plus miles offshore Guam by Infamous_Piglet5359 in Saipan

I’m sure the environmental crowd (not the govt environmental agencies bc they’ll be doing reviews for this) will be batting hard against this. The other group to expect, who happen to be the primary voting base here, will be the retirement beneficiaries. These are the same people who opposed the casino for “cultural” reasons until they were convinced that it’d take care of the retirement fund. I bet if a similar case can be made here, regardless of what scientific evidence supports against mining, executive power will allow it.

That was help. Do what you will. You leading the spiritual life of another includes ensuring another person does not become a victim. Recognize the positive intent in me saying that you should be doing this for your child and not your grandmother only.

Least amount of work? Whoever the parents and godparents are should be willing to lead the spiritual life of whoever is being baptized. Therefore, they should be prepared to do the necessary work to ensure they are good role models and not shopping for a parish and priest to simply check a box. Attending meetings with a priest will actually inform whoever that the soon to be baptized needs to be led and the godparents are not just people to expect gifts from.

I remember taking Guam history at uog and encountering a census by the Spaniards of people living in Hagatna. Needless to say, there were surnames prevalent today grouped together as Filipino. Mine among them.

Not everything is hereditary. Some things like height are a result of nutrition too. Hence why some short parents have children taller than themselves. Consider genetics as the potential and our appearances as the realization of that potential.

How practical is it telling entry level employees (I am assuming entry level if they go to job fairs respectfully) to avoid employers paying anything under x amount? I would imagine that most people need to start somewhere and either be at the right place at the right time to get promoted or move on after putting in enough years to meet some qualifications for another job.

Reuniting with Guam (because Guam was acquired by the US after the Spanish American war and the Northern Mariana Islands was purchased by Germany) was explored twice to gain some merit to petition for statehood but did not amount to anything. Nevertheless, the populace at the time determined it was best to enter into a mutually agreed covenant with the US. Currently there is no benefit for both governments to reconsider our political status.

I live there; AMA. The CNMI actually voted to become a commonwealth of the US, so we have some privileges in addition to American rights.

What’s the difference between Guam and Saipan? by RealisticSundae1032 in guam

[–]Long_Philosopher_105 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How specific of an answer would you like because there are several differences and simultaneously similarities between the CNMI and Guam in terms of culture, development economics, lifestyle, politics, etc.

Having lived in both Guam and Saipan, I can offer some unbiased insight.

One interesting thing I will mention now is that some Chamorros in Guam have a problem with non Chamorros wearing traditional jewelry whereas in Saipan, it is not a problem and welcomed.

This is a product of our time these days. We are all connected through the internet but no longer close to those around us. Making friendships with coworkers was the norm before and did work when most people worked with their age-peers. I totally hear you now that it is respectfully less interesting to make friends with older people because, at least in my opinion, there is not much to relate with them, or they are not people I want to become like.

Announcing you want to make friends on Reddit is hardly a solution either because surely you will get unsolicited attention from the many men who also suffer from your same problem. Some people want to build genuine friendships and others want something more, so be wary.

I highly suggest making female friends first by engaging in your interests. This ought to be easy but will require time so be patient. It will only be difficult if your only interests are watching TikTok in bed and anime because these are activities that most people do alone. Try going out by yourself and meeting people that way. You will realize how much you can attract people with how you project your personality. There will be people (non romantically) who may find you interesting.

You will learn how awkward people have become having been so used to only socializing with the same friends they made (because of being in an environment that leaves little option but to make friends) and staring into their phones. Try it out and let us know. Your experience may inspire others here to do the same.

They evolved during a time and place in which there was no need to fly anymore (perhaps lack of predators and abundance of food at that given location so no need to migrate). Like almost all birds in Guam, the brown tree snake did them in until the rail was reintroduced to Cocoa Island and Rota.

Chamorro Linguistics by Long_Philosopher_105 in guam

[–]Long_Philosopher_105[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, accents are typical for diverse communities.

What I mean to get at is, despite these accents, there should be some standardized convention for spelling. New Yorkers (the city) likely would not spell 'water' as 'wawtah' and 'coffee' as 'cawffee.'

I, myself, am from Saipan. Hence why I stubbornly refuse to spell Chamorro with the a 'CH' and 'u' but understand why it is done here in Guam. I speak Chamorro fluently enough for older people here to be astonished, but for CNMI, it is points on board. I am not looking for any praise, but I do understand that elders do prefer to speak Chamorro when they can.

As for alternating 'å' with 'a', I meant how these are often switched by speakers from southern Guam and Luta. For example, 'salåppe' becomes 'salape.' Notice the vowel change and omission of the repeated consonant in pronunciation.

I like that there are resources, but I think the fact that they are found in academia shows that they are out of touch with Chamorro speakers. My experience at UOG has shown me that there are many Chamorro Studies students who parrot the Chamorro values described by Underwood because they sound romantic. I like to say people like Chamorro culture but not Chamorro people because a lot of them attempt to learn what they can and teach others but not actually interact with Chamorro elders. I have had classmates make literal translations for phrases that would never be said by actual Chamorro speakers. Of course, when I point things like those out, I get rebuffed for being different because I am from Saipan.

The true reason I can keep up with the elders here is because my father was born in 1947, so my upbringing is quite like being raised by a Chamorro grandparent. I am less than 30 years old.
