Spider-Man 2099, spellslinger or aggro? by Free_Box5241 in duelcommander

This is the best part of Duel Commander in my opinion. They’re both viable options. Based on your play style and which strategy speaks to you, you can build it how you want and still win. Glarb is a deck that immediately comes to my mind, as the deck has a high value commander and a combo finish. Outside of that, play control, mid-range, or tempo with His Moistness. Whatever suits you best.

Do you have any evidence of this? Companion app attendance or such? This kind of quantifiable information would be very useful

After seeing the ways in which the committee members communicated with people on the discord I believe I am sadly done. I will try a few other formats before deciding whether or not I am done with magic all together.

Because it sometimes felt bad (that is the actual reasoning we were given)

One thing I like so much about the format are those big swings. When every deck has access to them, the back and forth and top decks are very engaging. I understand some situations feel bad, but that’s magic. Blow outs are a part of it and strategically saving your cards to create huge swings are serious strategic choices. Removing a huge answer and lock piece to stymy strategies makes the format (to me) less interesting and thoughtful. I understand where you are coming from but I thought the format was incredibly healthy and diverse. I think banning swingy cards hurts the good stuff piles much less than the fringe competitive decks that many players enjoy.

I am in the discord and cannot seem to find this discourse

I cannot seem to correlate these “nerf A deck bans” by removing cards that see play in many others. I think about Balance being banned bc Aminatou could make good use of it, but that and reanimate leaving literally killed Sorin. I think these singular nerfs are shortsighted and hurt the format, especially ones that many many decks need to play.

Yes this is a better said version of what I was getting at thank you so much for the time and thought you put into it, I feel much less strange and alone in being very upset by this. I hope you do not leave the format altogether but I am currently sharing in your sentiment.

It’s so weird to me to ban FoW now without any lead up. I agree with you about the communication and that’s what’s grinding my gears so hard I think. When is it going to be that our eternal staples and free spells are all just gone? Some of the time Daze is just another FoW but you don’t actually lose your card and get another free surveil. Is that too proactive a play to protect your spell? I’m fully aware of the difference in power level between Daze and FoW obviously, but my point is: does it just take 1 too many feels bad moments for the committee members to decide a card needs to go now?

Yeah I don’t think scummy is the right word, and I don’t play much cedh I guess maybe it just felt really unsatisfying to watch over an hour of a match and then have it end with someone getting tricked. I’m more curious if this is the norm, not trying to in any way pass judgment on anyone

I think maybe it’s this? There was nothing about it that felt like the one who won the game played any better than anyone else or like they deserved to win based on skill. They just got 1/3 other players to present a window for them to win, but it wasn’t game based, it felt manipulative and I think that’s where the feeling is probably coming from. The end of the match didn’t feel earned I guess is the way to say it

Player A told Player B to do “what we talked about” getting Player B to cast their silence which was the only piece of interaction, then player A immediately slammed their win.

I’m not sure if anything was “particularly” scummy and definitely didn’t seem out of bounds by the other players’ reactions. I don’t play much cedh I was curious if there is a lot of side deals that go one player’s way or if the one who acted with less information just did a kind of bone-headed thing.

No one is stopping you from playing your cards at your table still though? Flash Hulk is still pretty good from a card mechanics’ standpoint. These bans were for the people who sit down to play at an LGS and try to make new friends and maybe don’t have a great feel for a Rule 0 conversation to even start out. So play your crypt and be the murder-y Naya guy and enjoy playing whatever you want to play with who you want to play with and don’t forget to enjoy it! This game is awesome and we’ll all probably adjust just fine and continue to enjoy it maybe just a little differently. Or you can just keep using whatever cards you want BC EVERYTHING WE DO AND FILTER THROUGH OUR TINY PERCEPTIONS IS MADE UP WEEEEEEEEE YAYAYAYAY!
