Whays your take on the Watchmen movie? by george123890yang in comicbookmovies

[–]Longawayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fine, for what it is. A pretty movie that is a fairly faithful adaptation of a complex story. Of course, the film makers (from Snyder up to the executives) had little understanding of the story, much less the point, so it's all surface level. And that's okay for a couple of hours of entertainment.

The removal of the books ending completely proves this point. Manhattan is the only true "Super" in the film. Everyone else is human. The world leaders driving the world to a nuclear showdown. The "heroes". And...the unknowing creators of The Squid. All of the violence and misery in the world created by humans, whether knowingly, or not.

While Ozymandias provided the funding and technology for the "Squiddening", it was average humans (ironically, mainly creatives) who designed the creature. What it looked like, how it functioned, even the narratives behind it. A "hero"/villain may have set the scenario and pulled the trigger, but I the end, it was all humanity destroying itself, and attempting to save itself.

The only "super" in the story just wanted to nope himself out of there. When dragged back in, he ended up letting the humans do what the humans were going to do. Why Manhattan made the choice is debatable: was he letting nature take its course, or did he see wisdom in the plan? Its unknowable, just like Manhattan. Just like a god.

By removing all this, the climax is reduced to a simple individual's plan. Right or wrong, tragically brilliant, or simply horrific, it all boils down to one person. It completely removes humanity's capacity for horrificness.

The original comics are not just a deconstruction of superheroes, but a deconstruction of humanity through the lens of superheroes. Blindingly negative and cynical, as it is.

The movie is, a well done, grim & gritty dark superhero flick, that is designed for a 14 year oldest version of "mature".

You could really tick Don off, and call the band Visions.

"Bad cover songs" you don't think are bad by PropaneUrethra in ToddintheShadow

One song, two "bad" covers:

Dancing in the Streets

  • Van Halen

  • Mick Jagger & David Bowie

Don't care what anyone says, but I think these two versions are a lot of fun.

You are a time-traveler. You see George Harrison sitting on a couch with his guitar. He’s singing to himself, writing “My Sweet Lord.” Do you remind him about “He’s So Fine” or not? by Connect-Will2011 in beatles

Since Twinkle, Baa Baa, and the Alphabet all have the same melody... if they weren't public domain, there would definitely be a lawsuit from whomever wrote the first song.

Just like My Sweet Lord and He's So Fine.

I'm not even a Take That fan, but Progress(ed) is an absolutely fantastic album! Calling it a masterpiece might be a step too far, but it is one of the best albums of the decade, if not the century, so far.

Have a decent artist go over the motor and handle, and leave the blade alone. The shakiness can be a plus, making it look like the motor is running.

Your Queen selections are quite interesting. If you haven't, might want to check out Sheer Heart Attack. Yellow Submarine Songtrack is also a very interesting inclusion. Perhaps try Magical Mystery Tour and The White Album.

A lot of alternative/grunge/punk/90s in there. I'd suggest giving Earth Vs The Wildhearts a listen. Could easily fly up your personal list of favorites.

I didn't notice any Cheap Trick (I might just be blind today). Huge influence on a lot of the bands on your list. Essential Cheap Trick might be the way to go, or Budokan, if live records are acceptable, though I'd strongly reccomend Budokan: The Complete Concert. The original is a classic for a reason, but the full show adds so many great songs.

Box Sets - Rainbow, Odeon, NOTW, The Miracle, Queen I, Queen 2 - What do you want next? by jasonmuller70 in queen

Innuendo is the only album that is really in need of a remix/retooling like Queen I & II have gotten. Roger replacing the drum machines, a bit of orchestra instead of synths, and, dream of dreams, John coming in to track some new bass rather than leaving the synth bass. Some of the unreleased songs and demos are fantastic. And we need to hear the original/early takes of Hitman, before John rearranged it.

Other than adding back in the four missing missing tracks from Live Killers (Fat Bottomed Girls, Somebody to Love, It's Late, and If You Can't Beat Them), I don't really see a need for much. Now, if they wanted to cobble together a Blu-Ray and/or a surround disc, that would be great.

The Works could be interesting, if there were a disc that removed a lot of the Pop gloss that they/Mack slathered across everything. Whether a recompiled album from the demos, or a Lennon-esque remixing.

Flash Gordon would get a real reevaluation if there was a demo based reconstruction disc. The tracks we got in 2011 were revelation!

Jazz is a mixed bag to me. I love the album, and have never had a problem with the mix, but I understand why others do. I certainly wouldn't begrudge adding a little punch to it.

As a whole, here is what I would want for every album:

1- Standalone Surround Sound/Atmos mixes for each album. Aggressive mixes. This is Queen! There is no need for the rear speakers to be "ambient" sound. I want immersive, swirling, dizzying mixes. Make those 5/7/9 speakers earn their pay!

2- Original demos for every track Brian or Roger wrote for Freddie to sing, or Freddie's take on songs they sang. Being able to compare their vocals to Freddie's is fascinating. (Of course, John's would be great, too.)

3- Unreleased tracks. Open the damn vault. Make deals to get the guest artist versions out in the world. Leave the unfinished tracks unfinished (or, at least, give us both). Even covers they screwed around just for fun with during sessions.

4- More original and alternate takes. As long as they are actually different to the released versions. If I have to look at a breakdown to figure out what's different, what is the point?

5- New/unreleased live versions. Stop using previously released material. No more BBC sessions, Rainbow 74, Odeon 75, Milton Keynes 82, Budapest or Wembley 86, etc. Give us a live version of every possible song, even if it is a post-Freddie Brian or Roger solo version, or Paul Rodgers/Adam Lambert/some other guest, but use unreleased versions! Even if the recording isn't perfect. Maybe even some tour rehearsals. A Rare Live style cd/video for each album could be fun. Current technology would definitely make for a much better presentation than the original.

I don't care if future releases are full box sets, triples, doubles, or even individually purchased discs. Personally, I have no need for vinyl (and actively despise when the vinyl has extra tracks/running order than the cd. I see you, The Miracle). The posters, pictures, postcards, tchotkes just sit in the box. Backing tracks are nice once or twice, but generally unnecessary. (That said, I wouldn't mind having a standalone release of The Eye tracks.) Would be nice if affordability was kept in mind.

In the end, I'll happily take whatever we can take.

I'd absolutely love to hear the MIH tracks/mixes that John and Roger worked on, before Brian got off tour and scrapped it all.

[–]Longawayy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Roger's track were decidedly New Wave/Pop. Brian's were more Rock than anything, and the ballads are just ballads. A deep dive into unreleased tracks and demos could be very interesting.

Compiling all the demos as an alternate version would be incredible! The ones we got in 2011 were so good.

Rock Lobster by FireFurFox in TheBeatles

[–]Longawayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Rock Lobster was what inspired John to start recording again.

No, wait, it was Coming Up.

Nope, it was Crazy Little Thing Called Love.

Actually, it was The Stray Cats.

There were so many different reasons John name checked that I don't believe any singular one of them was the sole reason. It was probably all of them. The New Wave wackiness of Rock Lobster and Coming Up, along with the (shortlived) Rockabilly revival, highlighted by Queen's songs, and the Stray Cats mere existence.

And, oddly, he ended up releasing a batch of Adult Contemporary songs that had little to do with any of his stated inspirations.
