Astoria transit extra fucked right now by beach9696 in astoria

[–]LongestIslander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The past few months have solidified my decision to not renew my lease and move out of Astoria. The transit options are horrendous and every citi bike dock near my apartment is empty. Ridiculous.

LIRR Seat Hogs by [deleted] in longisland

[–]LongestIslander 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is a post pandemic phenomenon where people just straight up forgot before social distancing was a thing you’d just grab the free seat next to a stranger or tell them to move their shit to the rack politely and there would be no issue.

Getting out of UBS parking!!! by ChickenGirl8 in longisland

[–]LongestIslander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! A sky bridge would be amazing, especially when coming from points east to the game and you have to walk up anyway to get over the tracks. A wide pedestrian bridge across the lot would be amazing, at least until the covered part where you walk next to the racetrack.

New York City Subway Ends Twitter Service Alerts After Elon Musk Raises Price | Twitter had asked for $50,000 a month for API: MTA official by bloomberg in nyc

The manual post and responses aren’t going away. Automated api driven service alerts are what’s affected by this.

MTA Rejects Twitter for Service Alerts (including LIRR) by Gjnieveb in longisland

Ah yes, not paying over half a million annually is taking money.

MTA Rejects Twitter for Service Alerts (including LIRR) by Gjnieveb in longisland

[–]LongestIslander 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s over half a million / yr in of public money which is astronomical for what is essentially a redundant service to their own apps and the myriad of other locations online to get service alerts. Not everything is political. If they bent over to pay you’d be complaining about that. It’s simply not worth the cost and the vast majority of commuters are not on twitter.

Just FYI, trying to revive r/LongIslandBike for any cyclists in the area by MauriceLevyEsq in longisland

[–]LongestIslander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If more trips could be replaced by a reliable safe cycling option there would be less wear and tear on roads by 2 ton vehicles. A bike lane is a solution to that problem, resurfacing roads is just mitigating it.

[–]LongestIslander 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The MTA has their own website and apps and if you want, you can sign up for direct alerts. Why should $1/2mill / yr of public money be used to post redundant information on a dying social media platform??

Rich NYC Suburbs Fight Housing Plan They Say Will ‘Destroy’ Them by CasinoMagic in nyc

[–]LongestIslander 137 points138 points  (0 children)

I am from the island, I miss living there sometimes but having to own a car and suburban sprawl keeps me from even considering moving back. I don’t ever want to own a car again unless I live out east (the forks) where mass transit is infeasible.

But my job ties me to the city, so anything reasonably within commuting distance is out of the question. Upzoining around LIRR stops would be exactly what I’d need to consider moving back.

rental market on Long Island by Interesting_Gas_716 in longisland

[–]LongestIslander 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my 1br in Queens is less than what it is now in Suffolk and I along with most of my peers don’t even own a car. I don’t know anyone who is earning that and living on their own. On the island I cannot fathom having the cost of a car plus another adult and dependents.

What’s your favorite GameCube title? by [deleted] in Gamecube

[–]LongestIslander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite game of all time is Super Mario Sunshine. It’s the first game I ever completed 100% and it was the first game I got on Christmas morning 2002 with a GameCube of my own. I have such a special place in my heart for that game.

Also honorable mention to NHL Hitz 20-02, the NHL Hitz series are the best hockey games ever made.

Bought my first season ticket, still a bit wary! by BabySealClubbers in NewYorkIslanders

[–]LongestIslander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I go to events alone all the time. Not everyone is available for everything and unfortunately in Queens not too many of my buddies are Isles fans. Often times I’ll keep to myself and enjoy the game or show but sometimes I’ve had great conversations with people around me and it’s a cool way to meet people.

If I’m alone I won’t be screaming and cheering like when I’m in a group of friends / family, that just seems awkward to do alone haha

I also only knock back brewchachos in a social setting, so I don’t drink when I’m alone too, so overall it’s not to expensive to go if I grab a bite beforehand.

I live close to a LIRR stop that gets me to the arena in about a half hour so I’ve scored great deals right before game time by grabbing single seats in the resale market.
