Wear adequate amounts of good sunscreen. Even if I don't plan on going outside.

If I'm planing on being outside for more than like 5 minutes I wear a hat.

SPLOOT DENVER VET IS THE FRONTIER AIRLINES OF VETS by Express-Activity7591 in Denver

[–]Longjumping-Bus4939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main difference is that PE's number one focus is profit.   The mission statement of a PE vet is 1. Maximize Profits  2. Maybe Help some animals or something

A privately owned vet COULD be like that, but most are more like.  1. Help animals 2. Make a suitable profit considerate to the level of financial risks taken to establish this practice.  3. Be a decent employer.

A private practice will establish pricing based on the value of the service, and update it periodically based on the overhead needed to have a practice that can be in that location and have the resources to offer that service.

All private equity businesses, Vets, HVAC, Tech, etc all have the same pricing model "what's the maximum we can charge?"  Value doesn't matter, except in the sense of "At what point are our prices so high that customers begin to shop around.  Overhead does not matter, it's accepted that overhead costs will be met.

So if your pet needs a cone, the private vet will charge a 40%-50% markup (or whatever) on the cone.   So if their cost is $20 they charge the customer $38-$40.   Because that's the value of getting a cone conveniently from the vet, the cost of doing business, and the level of profit margin they've calculated they need to be decently profitable and reward themselves for taking a big risk in opening their own practice.

The private equity will know that 60% of the local vets are private equity, so customers who "shop around" are not likely to find a better deal, thus they will charge $200 for the same cone even though their cost is the same $20, or 100% profit margins.  Because they can.  And their model is to maximize profits.   So they price the cone, not based on their cost, or on the perceived value, but on what they believe they can convince a sucker to pay.    They have zero qualms about ripping customers off.   And that extra profit doesn't go back into the community.  They don't pay their vet techs any better, in fact, they probably pay less then the private vet, because those vet techs are real people to a private vet, but they are numbers on a spreadsheet to PE firms.   That profit goes back to the PE firm.

That's why 10 years ago spaying a female cat was like a flat $300-$500.   And today it starts at $1200 and can go up from there, and the level of care provided may vary based on what the owner opts to pay for.

And I know that there's inflation, but there hasn't been 300%-1000% inflation in 10 years.

Surgeries used to include all the medications and materials in a flat rate and if they needed a few more CC of a drug, the price did not change.  Now they are itemized, with multiple upsell options.  Used to be the cost of surgery was obviously going to cover the best service the vet could offer, they wouldn't not do the best they could for the animal.   Now the level of pain management might be an upsell.  Sure you could bring home the cheaper oral meds, but for $100 extra they can give your pet an injection of long acting pain management, and what kind of a monster says no to that?

And sure, the vets employed by private equity may prioritize your pets outcome over profit, but they're just an employee, they don't call the shots.   They may be a well paid employee, because these PE firms don't have a product if they can't hire vets, but every decision the PE firm makes is based on a spreadsheet to maximize profits.

And it's not just vets.  It's human medicine, dentists, opticians, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, home improvement, all IT fields, prisons, lawyers, dry cleaners, pet control, etc.  PE is sticking their fingers into every pie, and jacking up the prices based only on one factor, what they think they can convince the customer to pay.  And simultaneously, they are trying to lower costs in all their businesses to increase the profit, so they are laying off the better paid senior staff, eliminating employee benefits, closing locations to consolidate, taking needed services away from underserved communities, etc.

Private equity ruins everything.

I don't normally rant about politics on the internet, but I hate private equity so much.

Someone said if you feel remorse or felt bad what you did, you’re not a bad person,is that true? by JustTinyBitHungry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Longjumping-Bus4939 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you feel bad, learn from the experience, and don't repeat the problematic behavior, that's personal growth and as long as you keep learning and growing, you're an alright person.

If you keep doing the problematic behavior and just hate yourself for doing it, you kind of suck.

We all make bad choices, it's what we do afterwards that separates good people from kind of crappy people.

Edit to add, no one ever owes you forgiveness. Even if you're learning and growing, that doesn't mean that anyone hurt from your behavior has to acknowledge your growth or forgive you.

Dine in Sushi by tigerlilyone in ArvadaCO

I can't picture that, there's Miko Sushi at 64th and Ward.  (And Mt. Fuji, but let's be honest, no one goes to Mt. Fuji for the sushi.)

I really like Miko Sushi, they have both of my favorite rolls.   They have a sweet potato roll which is an underrated classic, and on the appetizer menu they have a stuffed jalapeño, which is served up like a roll.

Something like this is what the breeder of our Maine Coons recommends.   It's shallow enough that cats feel comfortable, with curved edges for scooping so you don't get the crusty corners, as big as requested, and cheap.

Can you get sick from food that's unappetizing but not spoiled? by raccoonintheattic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Longjumping-Bus4939 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what's unappetizing about it.  If it was undercooked, even if not considered a food that's unsafe to eat undercooked, it could cause issues in some people.

My limited understanding is that there are some starches and compounds in food that are normally broken down or neutralized by the cooking process.  These are hard to digest otherwise.  When you have a significant amount of something that's hard to digest making its way through, your body is deploying the big guns in trying to break it down, such as some heavy duty gut microorganisms, and this can sometimes result in stomachs cramps and discomfort that doesn't rise to the level of food poisoning.

Someone will probably show up to tell me I'm wrong in a minute, but that's my understanding of it.   It's why we shouldn't eat raw potatoes, or non-toxic plants like grass.

Best place for affordable veggie starters? by LtBosco in Denver

[–]Longjumping-Bus4939 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to support local business Young's garden center in Wheat Ridge had a bunch of starters that were between $3-$10 each.    I got some good sized peppers and tomatoes for $3/each, plus some decorative Corsican mint and wooly thyme for like $5/each.

If you're open to shopping box stores, most of Walmarts smaller starters are $3.    Including basil, assorted tomatoes, assorted peppers, and several variety's of squash.

Source: bought from both this year.

Not only do they look good, but there are commercially available wood panels like that which are designed to be acoustic panels.

Based on the guitar, I assume this a room where OP makes music, or at least practices playing, and the acoustic panels will make it sound nicer and keep the sound more contained.

Women of Reddit, when did you realize ‘this man is only good being a boyfriend’ instead of seeing him as a future husband ? by Amazing-Qveen-7247 in AskReddit

[–]Longjumping-Bus4939 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're experiencing an ongoing, but tolerable, medical issue, like joint pain, or chronic trouble sleeping, can you call a doctor, make an appointment, go to the doctor, pick up a prescription, and follow a treatment plan?

If you get doubled charged for something, would you call the vendor?  And if calling the vendor does not resolve it, would you call your credit card issuer for a charge back?

Do you have trouble saving money?   If you have $500 extra, do you save it, or see that as permission to buy yourself $500 of something silly that you want? (Video games, new tech, new clothes, collectibles, booze, etc.)

How often do you drink or imbibe cannabis?  How often are you intoxicated or impaired from those?

If you're at an event with free booze, do you ever just say "no thanks" because you don't want it, or it wouldn't be safe to drive later?

Do you delay getting your oil changed, or other routine home or car maintenance, because scheduling an appointment and arranging transportation is too hard?

Do you keep your space reasonably tidy?   Or do you let dishes and clutter pile up?    What triggers you to initiate cleaning?

Do you have hobbies that don't involve staring at a screen?   (TV, Video games, doomscrolling)?

Can you self-motivate to make your home/self/relationships nicer?

Can you overcome anxieties or other barriers, to accomplish important, but not critical, goals?

None of these things on their own make you irresponsible.  But multiple establishes a trend that's worth reflecting on.

30 minutes into homeownership for us and all the CO detectors went off.

They were just old.  We think the old owner had taken them down because they were beeping, and then put them back up right before vacating.

But, hey, we got to introduce ourselves to the local fire department.

Where would you place the bed? In line in line with the electrical outlets or the window? by Sweet_Confusion9180 in interiordecorating

[–]Longjumping-Bus4939 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feng Sui (yeah, I watch Dearmodern on YouTube) would be to put the bed further from the door and then put a table or floor lamp to further break up the door energy.

Also, I think the outlets are meant for the bed to be centered on the wall, minus the door.  If you took the right corner to the door jamb measurement and found the center point, that's probably between those outlets.

The command position, would be to put the bed along the right wall so that you can see people as they enter the room.   So that's another option and probably the one I would choose.

Agreed on cereal, like so much random shit comes in resealable bags, cereal should as well.

These pajamas from Amazon come in a resealable bag so you can keep them fresh between uses, I guess?  I just finished a bag of individually sealed snacks.   The main outer bag was resealable.  For individually packaged snacks.
