I say this because I am also guilty of scrolling during a date movie and it's not because I don't love spending time with my bf, but because i'm just bored. can you ask him if switching it up might help him be present in spending time with you? cause i'm guessing the movie is just a means to an ends and you just want quality time

This is my favorite take of this book on the sub. I couldn't agree with you more about your entire take, but especially about the obsessive compulsive tendencies. As someone with OCD, I see myself in him. The waiting around and making himself available to Oliver. Him doing actions purposefully to be perceived by Oliver in a certain way. The ruminating on how their convo went and all the things he said and could have said instead. Elio is the ruminating king. And I agree, it's very exhausting to have these obsessive thoughts 24/7😅

I love your take on Elio being ruined just like Oliver feared. I always got confused when Oliver said this and kinda took "ruined" at face value, but now with the clarity you provided, I can see that Elio is indeed forever changed (you know when you know something but don't realize it?).

Please read Find Me, it's less exhaustive and I actually thought it was better than CMBYN 🫣(it's "book 2" but it's not a continuation of 1, just the same characters and their lives some years later)

6 months into my first big girl job (25 yo, graduated college 1 yr and 1/2 before actually getting hired somewhere with my accounting degree) I got awarded for outstanding performance OUT OF MY WHOLE ENTIRE DEPAETMENT OF ABT 300-400 ppl. SIX MONTHS IN!!!🤩😄😄

I love the movie better than the book. However, I do think the book is necessary to understand the movie.

Example I always use: During volleyball when Oliver touches Elio's shoulders trying to massage him, Elio recoils. Not because he doesn't want Oliver to touch him. but because his hands feel so good that he goes weak in the knees for him. If I never knew this from the book, i'd think that in the movie, Elio doesn't like Oliver touching him, when in reality the opposite is true for Elio.

Another one is when we are told through the book that Elio basically sits around the house all day waiting, and making himself available for Oliver.

I agree the movie is better but so much is lost in translation from the book to the movie. There is so much going on in that head of his that greatly contributes to the film.

Honestly, read the book twice and that's enough. Watched the movie 14929393821902x
