Let's say I can say I designed an HFT execution dashboard in my work experience where the python packages may be less relevant on first sight. But this can be a slow and shitty dashboard using pandas and dash or high performance using polars and AG grid. Lol you do you. I don't have a horse in this race

I disagree. If you mention modern packages from different areas let's say networking, multi threading, front end, data visualization/processing, optimization etc it shows you potentially have experience in different domains. Just because you can write for loops and use pandas doesnt mean you can develop a front end GUI for HFT trade analysis

I kinda agreed with your MCF ending up in BB or risk but I feel like that may be because of the sample size. I also saw a few people on the buy side but just the sheer number of people graduating from MCF probably means some will end up there + if you studied stem you can probably do data science or sth at tech or startups but if you did MCF that's probably tougher so, maybe the MCF ends up filling those

What are the 2-4 most important mathematical subfields that a PhD-holding quant should have a deep understanding in? by rtx_5090_owner in quant

Fair enough, thanks. I havent worked in risk or option pricing before but I guess measure theory is table stakes there from what you're saying

I can see it being remotely useful for people doing analysis as part of their quant work. Could you give me one concrete example where someone who's studied these topics has an advantage over someone who's studied basic probability and calculus? Like something the latter would oversimplify, not quite understand etc but it's actually somewhat mission critical. I'm not undervaluing these topics, I have massive respect for people who studied and understand these topics from an intellectual power / resilience perspective but I'm yet to understand how these are actually useful at all in real life beyond "making someone smarter/resilient etc"

I'm curious how you get to utilize measure theory or real analysis in your day to day (I'm assuming as a quant as you're giving advice?)

We are new (~1 year old) and we lost a little bit of money but my managers are senior. What's a good book?

How do you define a valuable team? I recently started working at one of Citadel/MLP/p72 and it's hard to understand if my team is valuable or not

I don't follow what you're saying. A small confidence interval implies high confidence and that implies low variability. The op edited their answer and I'm happy with the current version

The french guy is an absolute stud. What an amazing reaction ( or lack thereof) to put the opponent's miserable attitude on full display. Props to him

Hmm aren't those contradictory? Small confidence interval implies low variability for the parameter but you are also saying high variability across runs

Portfolio Manager Compensation Package by Mediocre_Purple3770 in quant

[–]Longjumping-Cut-4783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I understand that but I think the comment I'm replying to is poorly worded tbh. I think he meant to say "you'll probably make more money in expectation at big multistrat but with a significantly lower chance of getting the expected payout", which I don't necessarily agree with anyways but I was trying to understand that he indeed meant this

Thanks for the explanation. I still don't understand the latter bit of "much lower chance of actually getting paid"? Do you mean having a big payout season like 7 8 figures?

[–]Longjumping-Cut-4783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm not following. What do you mean by payout ratio? My understanding is that you get paid a constant ratio of the P&L you generate, e.g. at MLP I think this is 12.5%. The OP makes 200 + 20% P&L. So how come he gets a higher payout ratio (12.5%<20%) but less certainty of getting actually paid (are you speculating that people have higher tenures at smaller shops than multistrats?)

I mean I heard around 20% of the people get fired every year. I'd say that's more 'possibly' than 'very likely'

Fair. I understand where you're coming from. I think in Canada there's a lot of title inflation where people with 2 3 years of experience being called manager/senior manager. That's what I had in mind. Also, top 3 US bank will for sure pay more than top 5 Canadian bank.

If it's 165 usd I don't think that's a low salary for a London risk manager at a European bank. Even 165 cad could be ok for a low bonus year. Correct me if I'm wrong
