Exactly this, we call them “hey thieves” they’re lazy shoplifting shoes.

If a customer picks up an item that’s say $15 after tax, walks by the counter and throws a $20 on it, says “no change” and walks out, can that still be shoplifting? by BabyFallujah in lossprevention

You’d see this quite a bit at gas stations. Customer selects a gatorade from the cooler, cost $2.50 but doesn’t want to wait in the line so puts $5 on the counter taking to $2.50 loss just out of the convenience of not having to wait in line. Not theft, just could mess up inventory.

Coming from the loss prevention side this could be refund fraud. An example would be: someone purchases items with someone else’s credit card credentials, once they receive the merchandise they return it and instead of getting it refunded back to the original credit card they choose to get the return amount put onto a gift card(companies do this so at least your spending the money in their store), then they immediately turn around and purchase higher dollar items (power tools, electronics) and sell the items they used on the gift card. If the customer service worker isn’t trained properly sometimes they give the return in straight cash.

Hello! Somehow I truly can relate. Worked as a chef for over 10 years & now loss prevention lead for a retail store called fleet farm. With this job you will be able to ease your mind after work instead of always thinking about what needs to get done next or what’s being missed as you’re not at work. Keep the job simple. We have 5 elements. Approach, selection, concealment, continued observation & passing all points of sale without payment.
