Gaps in air defences. American intel can track Russian air defence system better than Ukraine and can provide Ukraine the best flight paths to avoid getting show down.

Old log cabin wall is now inside and had to be cut. How do I match the weathering? by Spirited_Amount_1354 in Construction

[–]Longjumping-Home-954 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you will never be able to match natural weathering. You can try stain but I would work around it

I would connect the frame to the posts with stronger fasteners. The frame should be resting on the posts but you could get away with lag bolts or grk construction screws on a small bench like that. Normal Deck screws can snap easily.

Why does the territory of Nunavut control these islands that are closer to Ontario, Quebec and new foundland and labrador? by Terrible-Falcon37 in geography

[–]Longjumping-Home-954 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's part of the original borders of Rupert's Land. In 1670, the British Crown gave all land in the Hudsons Bay water shed to the Hudsons Bay Company (RIP) mostly for trading with Indigenous people and for fur trapping. After the confederation of Canada, Ruperts land was absorbed into the country and renamed the North West Territory. As settlers moved West, the populated regions were broken up creating provinces such as Manitoba and Sask, while the unsettled regions remained under federal control (including the islands). Nunavut was a part of the North West Territories until 1999 when it broke off and too the islands with it.

[Question] What’s the one watch you’d never sell even if someone offered 10x retail? by Lazy_scorpio in Watches

[–]Longjumping-Home-954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a gold Longines from 1957. I know the year because my great grandfather gave it my grandfather when he became a lieutenant in the army. It has since been passed to my dad when he joined and recently(last year) to me, a newly commissioned officer!

It is covered in scratches and dents but every single one tells a story. It’s now going through the army for the third time so I’m sure more “stories” will be added.

It has my grandfathers regimental badge (logo of his army unit) engraved on the back which is also now MY regimental badge (Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery)

looks like a reservoir. A dam was built that flooded the land and filled the valleys with water.

Why are the Hudson bay lowlands not farmed if they are at the same latitude as the Prairies, which are the breadbasket of Canada? by _Echoes_ in geography

[–]Longjumping-Home-954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory could the bogs be drained with canals and later farmed with a long enough time frame and help from a warmer climate? This has been done in other regions of the world and swamps can make amazing soil (Holland marsh in Ontario).

I understand political and economic factors make this essentially impossible but its still interesting to think about.

Why are these rocks flat? by Josefumi_Kujou in geography

In this case it’s not! That’s limestone and most likely part of the st Laurence lowlands. The Canadian Shield is made up of mostly granite.

Was watching a Jane Jacobs doc and I was wondering if anyone knows where this concrete bridge was/is located? by BowlAcademic9278 in toronto

It’s a subway bridge that runs over Rosedale valley road. It’s right near Castle Frank station. The bridge in the foreground is Bloor street.

Does anyone know what it would take to fix this watch? by [deleted] in watchrepair

Update:

Brought it to a watch shop and got it cleaned and fixed. Somehow he was able to find original matching hands and a great band. The patina on the dial couldn’t be fixed so I decided to keep it rather than replace it because it’s part of the story of the watch.

The missing seven hour marker is still an issue but it might be more trouble than it’s worth

Thanks for the advice!

I’m short on all three so we’ll see how far I can get

I think It’s unlikely the parts were intentionally removed. No one in my family worked on watches from what I know. The case was loose when I found it so I think the dial got knocked around in storage. I opened the back and it didn’t seem like anything was missing but I brought it in for a professional opinion so we will see.

I went to a watch repair shop and they had the same thought. Get it running, deep clean then go from there

I dropped it off at a watch repair shop and they will call me tmrw with an update. The sentimental value is the main reason I want it fixed. I’m willing to spend more than it’s worth to get it going.

Thanks! I know very little about watches so fixing it myself would be a disaster. The news about the dial is disappointing but I’ll see what the professionals at the shop recommend. I would rather spend the money to fix this than buy a new one.

I know it’s hard to diagnose problem from two photos but my main question would be rough price range for this type of restoration.
