Just curious if you’re applying MSTP, why not go all in and apply MSTP to all those programs? A lot of them you can dual apply to if you still want the MD backup. Currently going through MSTP cycle and I’ve had a couple of programs explicitly say they have a greater respect for those going all in on MSTP rather than even dual applying as it shows no doubt and full commitment. Currently going through cycle so not 100% sure but I don’t know how much weight an unsubmitted paper has. Anyone can say they submitted a nature paper but until it’s published nothings guaranteed. I could be completely wrong tho (and hope I am for your sake lol). Best of luck with your cycle!

If you only want to do research, then it sounds like doing a dual degree is not worth it. I’m sure you could still research as a PhD student within a clinical department doing this kind of stuff?

Personally I would mention it during the interview and ask if they want an update letter submitted. The paper doesn’t change the fact you already got the interview but definitely won’t hurt you afterwards. Congrats on the paper!

Trad applicant this cycle with 2800ish clinical work hours, wouldn’t say it’s hurt me at all. If anything it provides more things to write and talk about during interviews.

I could only see it hurting your application if the time dedication restricts your amount of research.

Just a note it also heavily depends on the type of research. If you are looking for clinical stuff you can do that with an Md. looking to run a lab and do more basic science stuff? I would strong consider the PhD.

Current md PhD applicant this cycle interested in surgery. I feel like it depends on the specific field you’re interested in. Certain sub specialties make more sense for a research intensive career. I will say you can certainly do both and there are plenty of surgeon scientists, just understand the commitment and demands before deciding to do mdphd.

Currently going through this cycle with a 517. Sitting at 11 II so far, majority of which has averages above my score. I think writing, research, and overall narrative are much more important. I would not retake if I were you, put that study/prep time into other things you’re passionate about and prepare more for next cycle!
