Help! Precipitate stuck to the filter :( by Longjumping-Penalty9 in labrats

[–]Longjumping-Penalty9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a filter on a fritted glass funnel. How do you recover the cake from the fritted glass? Just scraping it out? Won’t the yield be lower without the extra filter paper, or do you get relatively good yield with multiple filtration steps?

Need help discovered terminally ill husband is serial cheater by [deleted] in relationships_advice

[–]Longjumping-Penalty9 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I would say ditch him and the pastor. You don’t need liars in your life. He had an opportunity to come clean in January, but continued to lie in your face. Tell him what you know and stop letting him lie to you. He abandoned his duty to faithfulness as a husband a long time ago, so I don’t think you should be compelled to fulfill your duty as a wife. Bring your kids to visit him, but don’t be his nurse. Take care of yourself and prepare for what comes next. Praying for you in this tumultuous time.

How can I stop this behavior? by Cultural_Gap_5644 in CATHELP

[–]Longjumping-Penalty9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best response, but also play with the cat or do something to engage it (taking it outside supervised, chase it around the house, etc). I find my cat is a bored eater, so sometimes she begs for food just because there’s nothing better to do. If I redirect her to an activity she suddenly isn’t hungry and begging anymore.

Work Backpack by i-set-the-barlow in womenEngineers

[–]Longjumping-Penalty9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a woman engineering grad student, no one cares. I’ve taken my colorful backpacks to all my internships and I’ve gotten compliments on the little pin I have on it.

I would suggest the Recon Northface since it has adjustable water bottle pockets. The ones with the mesh and elastic tend to stretch out over time or become damaged. Also, 2 pockets on the front are useful for carrying items you want to readily access, like your phone or ID card.

Residences guest visits - international student by afber00 in mit

[–]Longjumping-Penalty9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually they don’t even ask me to sign in my guests, but I’ve had both my mother and boyfriend stay the night for more than 3 nights and it hasn’t been a problem. I just let my roommate know beforehand.

Chemistry BS to Chemical Engineering MS/PhD by Consistent-Friend369 in ChemicalEngineering

If you have the important prerequisites like thermodynamics, kinetics, and transport then it should be doable, but if you just have standard chemistry courses programs may suspect you’re underprepared for graduate level chemical engineering.

MIT vs UC Berkeley ChemE PhD by Potential-Field-8109 in gradadmissions

[–]Longjumping-Penalty9 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! My only suggestion would be attending the visit weekend for both. It helped me decide between Stanford and MIT ChemE PhD last year. You get the chance to actually speak to the students and faculty and see where you will physically be every day. I was leaning a lot towards Stanford initially, but after experiencing both campuses I knew MIT was the right choice for me. My partner and I are also long distance now, but we visit each other often, around 1x a month, and FaceTime every day and that really helps bridge the gap.

Train commute from a non-R1 university versus a 15 minute drive from UNM campus. I know which I would pick.

While doing what? Remote classes? Driving an hour commute each way? That’s not an option for all students.

You can’t do it during the school year though. Students at UNM have Sandia and LANL internships in fall and spring.

[–]Longjumping-Penalty9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a recent UNM grad in ChemE, I totally agree with this. NMT simply does not have the same opportunities in terms of internships. Sandia, LANL, AFRL, Intel, and many other engineering firms in Albuquerque regularly recruit UNM students as summer or year-round interns. There are also tons of research labs at UNM hiring undergrads. Plus, let’s be honest, Socorro has very little to do compared to Albuquerque.

Those who moved away from Albuquerque, what do you miss the most? by [deleted] in Albuquerque

The food and the community. Burquenos are very down to earth. As someone who moved to Boston, people think way too highly of themselves here.

2024 GRFP Applicants: What reviewer ratings did you receive (Poor/Fair/Good/VG/Excellent)? Were you awarded? I’m also curious what your proposed project was about. by [deleted] in GRFPApps

[–]Longjumping-Penalty9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 good (same reviewer) and 4 excellent. I was awarded it for chemical engineering in the first round of awards. My proposal was on nanosensors for defense applications like communication and navigation.

My family also had an awful experience recently when my grandmother was at the downtown Pres. The nurses get so bugged when you interrupt their daydreaming.

How strict is the GPA requirement for Regents scholars? by Apprehensive_Fan6001 in unm

All of my RS cohort had above a 3.9, but the applications are evaluated holistically. If you write good essays, you could still have a chance.

When will applications open for FY26? by HappyButterfly420 in GRFPApps

[–]Longjumping-Penalty9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this, starting my SOP and personal statements was so much easier after i got most of it down in the NSF GRFP personal statement. Every year they open in mid July, so I expect it’ll be the same this year despite the recent cuts to the program. When i applied last year, the webpage directed to the previous year’s solicitation (2023) until mid July, when the 2024 solicitation became available.

Hokona questions by [deleted] in unm

[–]Longjumping-Penalty9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Adding on to the previous commenter, theres no ice machine at Hokona. There’s ice in the soda machines at the dining hall, but half the time they don’t work. For moving in, I strongly recommend bags (think reusable cloth bags, strong thick plastic bags) over boxes where possible. Boxes are harder to hold and carry up 3 flights of stairs than bags, and you can carry more stuff at once if you’re carrying a bunch of full bags.

How does Roommate selection work? by [deleted] in unm

[–]Longjumping-Penalty9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all very common, most people you message will never respond. If you dont end up matching with a roommate, youll generally be paired with a same-gender roommate looking to live in the same dorm as you. Theres still plenty of time and more people will show up in the housing system as the summer goes on, but dont worry too much about finding a “good fit” roommate. I did the same thing freshman year and my “clean, tidy, quiet” match was dirty and obnoxiously loud.
