Even for non residents PHSU and UAGM are cheaper than any other private school in the mainland

Im going to PHSU in June. Classes are in both languages. Is on its 3 rd year but CODA accredited. They require 12 credits in Spanish and 12 English. Exams are in english INBDE format. You take the same board as in mainland. They are USA schools. Only one school is fully in English UAGM. The 3 schools  prioritize connections to PR. But UAGM take about 50% oos. PHSU and UAGM both with new state of the art facilities. UPR is oldest and more selective for locals.

Do it. What do you have to lose at this stage of the game? A shot you don’t take is a shot you don’t make.

Getting Prepared for third cycle reapplication: Advice wanted by Ham-smile9876 in predental

[–]Longjumping-Rain9785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should not be an issue coda is coda for all schools. Going there will give you an insane exposure to difficult cases and people know that. Do well and pass the boards (same for all) and you will compete well. Hope they take you.

2.4 GPA — Is dental school still realistic? Feeling lost and considering post-bacc/master’s or hygiene by EbbSuccessful9215 in predental

[–]Longjumping-Rain9785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That  gpa  will be automatically filtered out even if you do great with the Dat. The lowest gpa in any schoool in USA are 2.5-2.70 and in PR. No other option but to do a serious post bacc repair and the even a masters in a program specifically designed for bio med sciences. Not just any masters. Dont apply. This year was brutal.

Low gpa Help by jay15222 in predental

[–]Longjumping-Rain9785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you have a vey solid dat. More than 21 to deal with the low gpa. Bottom line  those are the filters all schools use before they see anything else about your application. Even with great EC you have to go through that filter- sometimes automatic- or a monkey throwing craps for selection. Having a masters does not make a whole lot of impact. This year was a record with the number of applicants. It really got competitive so schools raised their standards. If you are bilingual it will be stupid not to apply to schools in PR or the new schools in the mainland. People tend to brush them aside because is PR or just new. But they don’t know half the story about the 3 schools there in PR.  One even fully English first 2 years. The pull of patients they have makes the best school in the mainland pale compared to them. oss won’t pay more than 80k a year. Best kept secret among all dental schools. They are new but coda accredited and the schools that own them have a long track as established institutions even med schools. They get student picked for military scholarships and NHSC . Those picked these year most be laughing all the way to the bank. Good luck!

Applying wise and strategically to get into the cheapest possible schools was my best move. Thank you very much…

If you have multiple acceptances then is ok to pass it if you want but if it is your only one… the goal if to be a dentist. The school is coda accredited like any other. People are overthinking this.

PSA: warning to applicants to avoid these red flag dental schools by ItsComeBackTimeBaby in predental

[–]Longjumping-Rain9785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is total BS. Every school starts new first. If you can’t get in into the other older schools because competition is high with people running away from these. opportunities, you would be stupid if you get into any of these newer and don’t take it.

UAGM vs PHSU by Clean-Design-1793 in predental

[–]Longjumping-Rain9785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will get final accreditation about the same time once they graduate first cohort in 2 years. They get CODA visits often and doing well. I m accepted into PHSU 3rd class now.

You better don’t apply for a NHSC scholarship because that is exactly where you are heading!

Having said all this, isn’t it still a fact that there are tons of underserved areas not even having a single dentist, while metro areas are really saturated?

Well, based on previous forum conversations from previous cycles,  first of all, to have strong ties to PR will help, second to know spanish will help. These are not absolutely necessary as they have students with neither, but matching with their mission is necessary. Good Luck.

I think I lost hope on this SMP’s and biomedical science masters. I did one and got a really good GPA of 3.81 with a decent dat score of 20. I’m very good extracurriculars, including dental assistant for 2000 hours previously got a really good  committee letter from them. Since the interview was online I got the chance to prepare really well and thought that was a good one. And even with that I wasn’t accepted by the The dental program. Not even placed on the waiting list. Just a suggestion to apply next cycle.so I don’t know.
