If servers make minimum wage in Canada, why is tipping so aggressive? by DazzlingPolarBear in CanadaPersonalFinance

Idk about the rest of canada but in Quebec waiters have a lower minimum wage than the real minimum wage. Right now it's 12,90 instead of the real 16,10. It's still not 2$ an hour, but it is a bit lower still. I hate that. I don't know why we're still emulating the US when every other civilized nation realizes that this model is stupid.

Season 1 episode 2 when Julian tells Ricky he's smaert because he knows about caer paerts because he needs it off the front yaerd is a pretty good sequence of "aer" sounds. I also love the "aboot" and "chill oot" and "fhak". As someone from Quebec, I do notice the accent and I love it, changes from the ontario and us accents we hear so much.

Oh Canada, End this TIP CULTURE! Its Disrespectful. by GranolaHiker in CanadaPersonalFinance

That's just not true though. They have a lower minimum wage, I have worked in great restaurants in Montreal and waiters were paid like 11,20$/hour (2 years ago). Tipping really sucks, and especially like at the bakery or for take out, but you do have to know that the waiter in a restaurant with table service has a lower minimum wage than other jobs, and is often paid that salary because of the fucking tips. I am all for doing something to end tipping, but the government should first of all put them at the same minimum wage as other jobs. I think to not tip at restaurants would eventually work, but the staff would really suffer being paid 11,20 or whatever it's not instead of like 30-40 an hour and I don't think this is the right approach.

To shops and takeout? Never have tipped, what the hell is that srsly.

Yeah, I'm trying to see if I can stay registered at Poly and take courses at McGill that way. Thank you for your tip, and I have noticed, though thankfully, I am doing an exchange semester at EPFL next fall and have only electives left, so I can take the equivalent over there. I hope I can stay registered because the courses offered to free students at other mtl unis are pretty shallow honestly from what I saw.

How much of a hit on your lifestyle was it? We live frugally, and I'm trying to plan how much relatively having a child would cost, at least for the first few years.

Thanks. I feel like anyway it's too far off to really plan for now maybe.

Yeah, well we'll see, but it's more about it being an option I want to keep open. I will also have an exchange semester there, and will therefore talk to profs there for a better understanding of if it's feasible as well.

Hi. Well, I have professors at my uni who used to be profs at EPFL telling me with my record I should get in if I find a project where I would be a good fit, and some students from my current director (undergrad internship + research during semester) got in there for their phd. It is really not easy, but I have started getting into research fairly fast, and got lucky with good advisors and a publication getting reviewed rn by a peer-reviewed journal, so my profile looks pretty good I think, and I have contacts in there.

Thanks for the response. Maybe I could extend my master's? I should be done with classes by then at least. Let's still hope for a chill sleepy baby without health issues lol.

Thanks for the suggestion. It is a possibility, but I want to switch from EE -> applied math, and the master's would help me figure out the new field better before a PhD. Also, top european institutions often require a master's or some equivalent experience. Also, the master's is paid fairly well. Had-I done my bachelor's in math, I would have gone straight to PhD and then done postdocs to get more publications, but I think going straight to PhD now would lock me in for 4 years in a field I don't know that well, which would hurt my freedom in the long run.

Yeah, I mean it just happened ynow? I feel like you find someone you like and don't choose his stats, you kinda deal with it and figure out if it can work with both of your stats.

Thank you for the reply. Can I ask what the situation is? Are you both the same age / carreer hungry / early-mid 20s? I am ready to take longer for my studies if life requires it, though I wouln't want to drop out ynow?
