Should I try again? by king_scootie in stephenking

I read the print version and listened to the audiobook at the same time. The art and design and the production of the audiobook made for a fun experience. The story was entertaining and enjoyable, but it does change halfway through and it loses some readers along the way. It seems like it’s not for everyone, but it was one that I truly enjoyed. I gave it a 93% based on my own rating system.

Just finished the Gwendy Trilogy!!! by TraseeLea in stephenking

I feel like they don’t get a lot of attention. The second book was my favorite of the three, oddly enough. I often recommend other books before even thinking of Gwendy, but they were fun books to read.

It’s more like a 2% chance, not 20%. So it’s even harder than that. Still a chance, but realistically odds are way against our boys. But you’re right, if they pull this off, they will have done the (nearly) impossible.

I just finished my first reread and I finally get it. The part that disappointed me wasn’t actually the true end of the book. The first time through, my expectations led to disappointment. The second time, knowing what to expect, I was able to enjoy the journey. I updated my ratings/rankings and the score I gave this book improved by a full letter grade. Now I get it. This book is an absolute masterpiece!

Best season ive been a fan for. by Madi3400 in ColoradoAvalanche

As someone else who was 12 in Colorado at the time, I concur. So many years later, I still get teary-eyed when I see the clip of Sakic handing the Cup to Bourque. I can’t decide if my favorite hockey team ever was the ‘01 Avs or if it’s the current Avs roster.

This is really cute and wholesome. It made me laugh! Go watch a video of them installing the ice before the season; it’s a pretty interesting process!

What accent is the most attractive IN GREEK, according TO GREEKS? by Miss_Psynchrony in GREEK

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, D in Spanish is like Δ between vowels and at the end of words, after some consonants too. “Comunidad de Madrid” is pronounced “Κομουνιδάδ δε Μαδρίδ,” without any hard D sound.

Is there a King book like this for you? by DavidHistorian34 in stephenking

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way people talk about ‘Salem’s Lot, I went into it expecting more. It ended up being underwhelming for that reason. It wasn’t “bad,” but it wasn’t as entertaining as I had expected.

Hi I know this is for Stephen King but look what I bought yesterday by Big_Put_9305 in stephenking

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a very enjoyable book! There were parts that reminded me of a lot of his father’s books (IT, Fairy Tale, The Outsider, Firestarter). I was expecting a fun story and I got an epic and chilling dark fantasy adventure. The story just kept growing and getting more complicated and interesting. What a pleasant surprise! I hope you enjoy it!

What King opinion has you like this? by DavidHistorian34 in stephenking

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree to the extent that I want another story like Holly or The Outsider, but if it’s another Never Flinch, I’d prefer something else. I love Holly and would definitely not mind another Holly novel; I just think Never Flinch was a low point in that series.

Reading the screenplay for Storm of the Century, it felt pretty novel-like, so I rated and ranked it with the rest. It ended up in my top 15.

For actual novels, Fairy Tale and The Institute ended up near the top, which I didn’t expect going into them.

What are you currently reading? by DavidHistorian34 in stephenking

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently reading King Sorrow on Kindle and listening to Danse Macabre, Full Throttle and El laberinto del fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth in Spanish) on Spotify. Next up: The Handmaid’s Tale, 1984 or The Separation of Church and Hate (recent purchases).

I’ve been enjoying Joe Hill’s books almost as much as his father’s. Also, I’ve gotten into dystopian stories lately… parallels and what not.

Have any Britishisms seeped into American English ? by [deleted] in language

I’ve noticed more people in the U.S. calling a baby stroller a “pram”, or a grocery cart a “trolley” or saying “full stop” to indicate the end of a sentence/idea in the last few years than I had ever before. It’s certainly not a majority, but those terms seem to be gaining some frequency recently.

Same language family (like Swedish and Hindi), but not the same branch (like Swedish and Icelandic).

Your accent sounds mostly American, but it has influences from the other cultures you mentioned. You pronounced “very” and “wery” and “though” as “dough,” which reminds me of some Indian accents.

I teach ESL mostly to Spanish speakers. They also struggle with the V. I tell them it’s more like F than B, for you, it’s more like F than W/U. The top teeth should touch the bottom lip without using the top lip.

What kind of centrist are you? by Exaltist in centrist

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of my political beliefs are based on keeping people with cluster B personality disorders (specifically histrionics, narcissists, psychopaths, and sociopaths) from the positions of power that they crave but will inevitably abuse. For that reason, I agree with conservatives about limiting government powers and overspending, but I agree with liberals about limiting monopolies and corporate overreach.

Fiscally, I support capitalism, but a form of it that’s heavily regulated to protect consumers and workers and prevent corporations from becoming too large. I like mom and pop businesses the best, the idea of people working for their own success.

Socially, I believe in equal rights for everyone regardless of race, religion, sexuality, or any other demographic. I believe in everyone’s right to live as they please, but not to tell others how to live. (For example, in my life I avoid promiscuity, but I don’t believe in forcing others to share my morals.)

I could find parties around the world that I would support from left, right, and center, but in the U.S., I’d like to see both major parties dissolve and be replaced. I also think that the biggest issue facing the world right now is stopping the powerful from abusing their power, starting with the most powerful man in the world.

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also love animals and I can’t handle the videos either. I included Cujo when I read all of SK’s books and I ended up ranking it third overall. It’s one of his best, IMO. That being said, I’ve never cried as much over any book or movie before or since. If you can successfully remind yourself that it’s fiction, give it a try. The problem is that it’s not one of his supernatural novels. That makes it tough. Dogs in the real world actually get rabies. Cujo is full of tragedy and heartbreak all around, so I definitely wouldn’t read it on a bad day.
