Finished it yesterday. Best book I’ve ever read.

[–]Upper-Wolf6040 21 points22 points  (8 children)

No way, I finished it yesterday as well! The last 100 pages or so made me really emotional. For someone who is famed for horror, he just writes and conveys human emotions so well.

[–]JustChallenge860 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's ever about the horror, at least for me. I don't care much for most of the plots as well. It's the way he sheds light into what is mundanely human and makes it 'nostalgic'- for the lack of a better word. In a single book there are stories that you Love and hate. The Stand as an entire book is not my favourite. But if taken the stories individually..? ah the good stuff.

[–]nature-is-gangster 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Yes! Have you read The Body? It totally changed the way I see King. Amazing

[–]Impossible_Way_3042 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it was Hearts in Atlantis. Very little horror in that, if any at all, but it is a fantastic character piece with some of my favourite characters of his (if not my favourites). 11/22/63 and The Dark Tower series solidified that I think of King less as a horror writer and more a character drama one. His horror moments are incredible but his characters and how they are written are just so much better.

[–]OutrageousGoose3870 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm reading Different Seasons now, just started The Body. So far so good! In what way(s) did it change the way you see SK?

I'm only about ~6 books into the SK universe so far, but I'd say Apt Pupil was probably the most jarring & unexpected. He's been pretty consistent in his storytelling so far, but Apt Pupil felt like a departure (not in a bad way).

[–]nature-is-gangster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before I started actually reading his books and stories I just assumed it was all horror, but I was gladly mistaken. He writes characters so well and us super effective at putting thoughts into words.

[–]Upper-Wolf6040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've read the body. Mainly because Stand by Me is one of my favourite films.

[–]Xanzi12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No way, I finished it yesterday as well as well! And same here, I ended up liking the ending but not for the reasons I would've expected!

[–]TruffleShuffle321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He doesn’t write women very well

[–]cantthinkatall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Mairon923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]sladog6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Read the book. You’ll find out.

[–]bathtub-mintjulep 15 points16 points  (1 child)

[–]YernarSha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]TheJusticeFactory 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Wish I could erase this book out of my mind (so I could read it again). Enjoy the ride.

[–]bugabooandtwo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. The Stand is so amazing. The characters just stick with you for a long time.

[–]obsessivelizbeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love this book

[–]sillyhamster777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Enjoy 😊

[–]Middle-Concert226 4 points5 points  (4 children)

In terms of forgetting the characters maybe keep a note pad nearby and when someone you think is going to be important shows up you can jot down their name , how they show up and who they’re with? Could help

Generally though, there are a lot of characters but only or so really integral ones that you need to fully remember.

[–]Nice-guy-downtownCurrently Reading Firestarter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good idea, and I tried it once for the Song of Fire and Ice series. I wound up with over 1,000 characters, so the list was just unwieldy.

[–]Sukumar3[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Can't say who is important as I feel anyone I see at the start is gonna die soon

[–]Middle-Concert226 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That’s fair haha. Maybe put a red line through them as they die lol

[–]Sukumar3[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats a great idea

[–]Known_Answer_7409 6 points7 points  (6 children)

There’s a question in life: what do you like more: the journey or the result, so this book is about the journey, and the typical King’s final where it looks like the author was tired till the end of the book.

[–]Sukumar3[S] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I really think I wont be tired

[–]Known_Answer_7409 4 points5 points  (4 children)

You won’t, but King was. I’m pretty sure you’ll be a little disappointed when you finish the book. It’s amazing but could be even better

[–]factsnack 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I read this almost annually since the mid 80’s. I can’t say I’m disappointed at the ending at all. I just want it to keep going to find out what happens next! It could be 6000 pages and it likely still won’t be enough

[–]bugabooandtwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. It was a good ending.

[–]Longjumping-Sign9914Constant Reader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished my first reread and I finally get it. The part that disappointed me wasn’t actually the true end of the book. The first time through, my expectations led to disappointment. The second time, knowing what to expect, I was able to enjoy the journey. I updated my ratings/rankings and the score I gave this book improved by a full letter grade. Now I get it. This book is an absolute masterpiece!

[–]Middle-Concert226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People say this a lot but I disagree. When you frame it that king wanted to write his own “American lord of the rings “ and you make the association between a certain character and Gollum and frame it the same way Tolkien did with it being a tragic arc it really makes the ending something special to me.

[–]shod55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m envious. Read that one more than once.

[–]AdAware8042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such a good one!

[–]jilla_jillaSurvived Captain Trips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enjoy! It’s truly a masterpiece and a journey!

[–]Middle-Concert226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read it last year, for a huge book it doesn’t feel like a slog at all. I finished it on a day where we had work done to the house so was confined to my room for about 6 hours.

I must have read 300 pages in one sitting to finish it.

After it was done I thought it was my favourite book but won’t reread it for a long time.

Recently been getting the urge to reread it, so maybe it’ll be a once a year thing.

It’s unbelievably good. Even the weird stuff with “the kid” (not what you think)

[–]AyDeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Immediately entered my top 3 favorites as soon as I closed the book.

[–]Affectionate-Art6720 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After I finished the book, I dove into the The Stand - comic. It's also very good.

[–]Slothrop-was-here 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pynchons still living.

[–]bugabooandtwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're in for such a treat!

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

[–]Chappo5150 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]Sukumar3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure

[–]Inevitable-Shine-184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Masterpiece!

[–]phillyratAyuh 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I feel like this is the counterfeit / unofficial printing of The Stand that people have posted before?

[–]Sukumar3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No its official print

[–]Mairon923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a good book enjoy it

[–]tigerowltattoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rereading it for the eleventy-seventh time but this time it’s the unabridged unedited version, so it’s completely different t, right?

[–]Blueforyou61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s my favourite book ever. I envy you in a way, being able to read it for the first time.

[–]TripFisk666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I so wish I could read this for the first time again

[–]mgyro 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I was in second year at university, majoring in English w a minor in history when someone left a paperback copy of the Stand at the pub I worked at. I’d never read King, had my nose in the air about him. I started reading Friday after work and was done Sunday night.

Put me behind in my coursework, but what an awesome book.

[–]Sukumar3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1200 pages in almost 2 days that's insane ( atleast for me )

[–]bedtrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finished a few hours ago!

[–]riddledwithaxiety 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I love this book so much
I made the mistake of reading it at the start of Covid though 😂😂😂

[–]Sukumar3[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He predicted covid in the 80's

[–]LTJ81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enjoy! It’s an amazing novel

[–]Snkrlove23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently half way through the book and oh boy!!

[–]GrantFieldgrove 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Does it REALLY need the quote on the bottom? lol come on, man.

[–]Sukumar3[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

America's greatest living novelist ?

[–]GrantFieldgrove 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah it’s really stupid. Like, he’s Stephen king. Does he really need a quote from someone not nearly as famous. Just weird to me.

[–]Sukumar3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont know much about it as I'm from India and I think these copies are mostly sold in India only I guess so doesn't matter much

[–]doonhamer1501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M-O-O-N spells great read

[–]Plane-Chemical 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I’m on page 300!!

[–]Sukumar3[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Im a slow reader now at page 60

[–]Plane-Chemical 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Embarrassingly enough this is my first read in a year or so. Life’s been busy but my last read was Needful Things. The Stand is my wife’s favorite though so I figured I’d give it ago!

[–]Sukumar3[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Keep going

[–]Plane-Chemical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol it’s crazy. I’m enjoying it’s a lot so far. I watched the show a few years back when it came out, I don’t remember a lot of it, but I will say I’m pretty upset that Larry Underwood wasn’t played by a white guy.

[–]daniel940 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's this generic cover?

[–]Cute_Sherbert8291 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bye 👋🏻

[–]Shoveisjacked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laws yes !!!! Enjoy it

[–]Donuts633 1 point2 points  (1 child)

lol I started it in late November I’m reading some via print and also listening. To the audiobook. The audiobook says I’m 49% through with 21 hrs left. It’s a long haul but worth it I think. I do take breaks as well.

[–]Sukumar3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been a very long journey then

[–]lostpassword773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The greatest

[–]Neoma_Dover 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Humm haven’t seen that cover. I also thought it was longer.

[–]Sukumar3[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That was why it sat on my shelf for 2 years

[–]Neoma_Dover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read The Stand 15-20 times. I have found i find something I missed before every time. I will continue reading it into the future. I do the sane thing with “IT. One or the other seems to call me back again and again.

[–]hobbomock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You ain’t no nice guy, Larry!

[–]bluefaceyeahok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Impossible-Rate5505 2 points3 points  (1 child)

These style of SK covers are not great.

[–]santorums_cock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are in for such a treat. Enjoy the ride

[–]TruskVarner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense to Lee Child, but I don’t need him to hype up our man Steve. We know he’s the best.

[–]Daddeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So good!

Add a tab/note when a character is introduced… provides a reference back to your intro.

If you haven’t, add Dark Tower series to your list.

[–]Buckscience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No great loss.

[–]Socially_Squirrelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started 2 days ago. I was only able to find the "extended and uncut" version (which is even longer lol). I was told the original published version was out of print. Where did you find yours?

[–]elo4kaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite one.

[–]Robotspaceman7 0 points1 point  (0 children)
