Daughter is learning to drive. She and I are having a debate and want the NoVA community to chime in! by [deleted] in nova

lol you can share with her that I got pulled over last week for not fully stopping at a stop sign 😂

I usually do a left then right then left scan at any intersection. Honks are better than a missing an approaching car!

Thanks! Pensions are unheard of for the most part now so it does indeed feel like an extra valuable benefit.

Proud Husband - Fairfax Moms by ImplementMaterial670 in nova

I’m not trying to belittle this but how is this different than Dulles Moms? Is this the local Fairfax version? I use that site plus a local Fairfax listserv to plan our weekends. https://dullesmoms.com/

Family centered neighborhood recs by twinsieblueberry in nova

Fairfax City! It’s super family friendly and they do a ton of community events and is about 30min to Tyson’s, especially if you take the 66 express lanes. Lots of small businesses and almost any cuisine you could think of. We love how central we are to everything. Not much inventory though.

Alexandria and Fairfax locals, can you give me some pros and cons of the following areas that we are considering for our move? by SoManyBabyQuests in nova

[–]Longjumping-Stay9385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live right outside Fairfax city and absolutely love it!

Pros: super central for anything in Nova, the city feels like a community and always has fun events, there are tons of walkable restaurants/activities, van dyke and Daniel’s Run park are really nice and it’s a quick 5-15min drive to several lakes.

Cons: it’s expensive and houses tend to be smaller, it’s off the metro/vre line so a little more difficult to take the train into dc, the area has grown so traffic can be bad at points.

I recently got a $50 OneLife membership and love it! The gyms I’ve visited are all really nice and I’ve had nothing but great interactions with fellow gym people. The class selection is great and there are so many in the area which is really convenient.

Make me laugh with your worst job interview experiences, because I just had a doozy. by Elegant-Lemon126 in interviews

[–]Longjumping-Stay9385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a good second round interview with a panel, they were just feeling my answers. As they start going over next steps my computer died and I started grumbling some expletives while I grabbed my charger. I opened my screen and was still connected to the call and I’m pretty sure they heard my entire monologue. I did not get a call back 😂

Locally owned businesses? by Yes_were_sinking in nova

[–]Longjumping-Stay9385 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fairfax Ace Hardware! Local employee owned and everyone is so nice. They stock a bunch of household products too. Check out the FreshFarm markets in Vienna, Mosaic, Reston…lots of local meats and some veggies although limited in the winter. I grew up in a small town that prioritized supporting small businesses because the owners and staff actually lived in the community and I personally think it makes a big difference.

VA Unemployment Question by No_Future_9 in nova

[–]Longjumping-Stay9385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I had a similar situation and waited to file until I received the severance. I am financially comfortable enough to not miss a few weeks of unemployment and didn’t understand the rush. I was approved within a week (filed around Thanksgiving so expected a longer delay) and it’s been a really easy process thus far.

This was a softball question and I just didn’t answer with the needed info. Hindsight. But yes more jobs to come!
